Re: The Roku Thread

I have a Roku 4 right now, but it is dying. If I can't get a new power cord, I might get a new Roku. I don't have a 4K TV, so should I just stick to the 4 model?

I can't answer specifically but I got the Ultra model with 4K last Black Friday direct from Roku and really like it. I don't have a 4K TV but it certainly does seem "snappier" over my older models when moving through menus and I like having the ability to use 5Ghz (802.11AC) WiFi. It replaced my Roku Express+ I bought a year or so earlier (also Black Friday if I recall).

Re: The Roku Thread

I can't compare other Roku models since I've only ever had an Ultra 4k(i don't have a 4k tv), but so far the unit has been great. No major issues thus far

Re: The Roku Thread

If you haven't used the Scripps Network channels in a while, check them out. Travel Channel, Food Network, HGTV, etc have all added tons of shows. All the current shows and a bunch of great classics. Here's a few highlights:

FOOD NETWORK - 181 Shows
30 Minute Meals with Rachel Ray (256 episodes)
Good Eats (252 episodes)
Giada at Home (238 episodes)
Everyday Italian (110 episodes)
Guy's Big Bite (264 episodes)
Iron Chef America (183 episodes)
Sandra Lee's Semi Homemade Cooking (51 episodes)
Sandra Lee's Money Saving Meals (65 episodes)
Unwrapped (127 episodes)

HGTV - 175 Shows
Curb Appeal (337 episodes)
Design on a Dime (146 episodes)
House Crashers (170 episodes)
House Hunters (867 episodes)
House Hunters International (799 episodes)
Island Life (210 episodes)
Kitchen Crashers (119 episodes)
My First Place (314 episodes)
Yard Crashers (206 episodes)

TRAVEL CHANNEL - 131 Shows
Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations (130 episodes)
Anthony Bourdain's The Layover (20 episodes)
Food Paradise (137 episodes)
Ghost Adventures (200 episodes)
Mysteries at the Museum (326 episodes)
Samantha Brown's Passport to Europe (22 episodes)
Samantha Brown's Great Weekends (50 episodes)
Toy Hunter (42 episodes)

DIY Network has 69 shows. Cooking Channel has 57 shows including the original Iron Chef (13 episodes).

Unfortunately, they don't have Samantha Brown's Great Hotels. And it looks like Paula Deen's still 86'ed.

Re: The Roku Thread

^^^ Cool. Thanks for the heads up about the Travel Channel update. Some good archival content.

No Andrew Zimmern shows though. It could have something to do with his content moving to the Cooking channel. Apparently Travel channel has dumped practically all food related travel shows. Andrew's shows were dumped late last summer.

Edit: Oops, looks like all if not most of Zimmern's shows are still there.

Delete or Turn OFF? I accidentally activated it a week or so ago and had to go into Accessibility Settings to to turn it OFF.

Turn off Descriptive Audio

Select Settings from your device's home screen.
Select General.
Select Accessibility.
Select Audio Descriptions.
Set the toggle switch to Off.
Return to the Netflix app and begin playing a movie or TV show.

Re: The Roku Thread

I just discovered...remember, i'm new to Roku... you can change the audio for the "find the remote" feature. My remote now plays the Game of Thrones theme when I hit the find button.

Re: The Roku Thread

The new Travel channel app update is awesome. Love seeing all those classic shows. Travel channel re-branded a year or so ago, so not many of their shows currently airing actually deal with travel, so I'm glad to see all that content there.

Re: The Roku Thread

I'll have to add the Travel Channel. That was a big deal for me, that they never really showed actual travel stuff. So that's great to hear they're living up to their name again.

Re: The Roku Thread

I've watched a couple episodes on the HGTV and Cooking Channel apps. The ads aren't too bad. They're placed in the proper commercial breaks. And they're only about 90-120 seconds long. The typical show takes about 26 minutes. So it's less commercials than regular TV.

When I want to travel programs, I often watch HGTV. They have some good travel shows. House Hunters International, Island Life, Bahamas Life, Caribbean Life, Hawaii Life, Island Hunters, Mexico Life.

But these days, the best travel shows are on Youtube. There are travel vloggers that put out amazing content.

BigD, care to share some of those best travel shows on YouTube? I abhor the YouTube culture, but I’m a sucker for a good travel show.

Ever heard of Mark Wiens?

https://www.youtube.com/user/migrationology

His YouTube channel has about 3.8M viewers. His travel vlogs are fantastic. Really cool guy. American based in Bangkok and he travels all over the world for the food culture.

He's probably one of the most popular YouTube travel content creators right now., His videos are high quality. They run anywhere from 15 minutes to 30+ minutes.

His page alone will keep you busy for months.

Mark also has select content posted on Amazon Prime.

Trevor James the Food Ranger is also another good one. He's a travel vlogger based in China.

https://www.youtube.com/user/thefoodranger

His videos are also really good and high quality.

Re: The Roku Thread

Roku Streaming Devices, TVs Gain Alexa Support

Amazon’s Alexa assistant can now be used to control Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices: Roku launched an official Alexa skill for its streamers Tuesday, making it possible to control video playback and more with the help of Amazon’s Echo speakers.

The new voice control feature comes after Roku first launched its own voice assistant, and then brought support for Google’s assistant to its devices.

The new Roku Alexa skill offers playback controls like play and pause, search functionality and the ability to launch individual apps on a Roku TV or streaming device. When connected to a Roku TV, Alexa can also be used to turn on the device, select an over-the-air broadcast channel or change the volume.

Owners of an Amazon smart speaker or similar device with Alexa built-in can find the Roku skill in the TV and video section of the settings menu of their Alexa smart phone app. The skill will work with TVs and streaming devices running Roku OS 8.1 and up.

Re: The Roku Thread

I just bought my first Roku. It is the Premiere, which is on sale for $35 at Walmart and Amazon. I have no idea what to do with it.

I got it because wanted to watch Doom Patrol on DC Universe in April.

You can also watch Doom Patrol now, unless you're waiting until April for it to be all out before you subscribe or something.

Really? Plug the HDMI cable in the HDMI port and put it in HDMI 1, 2, or 3.

plug it in.

turn it on.

set your TV to HDMI 1 2 or 3

it will ask for your WiFi information.

then it downloads new software update.

enjoy

Was it accidental? Mine was activated about a week ago, too. I didn't do it, and the menu is pretty deep for an accidental activation.
