Well I am done with DVD Express and now I am looking for the best place to buy on the net. Price is important, but preorders, good service, and site layout/navigation are important as well. Amazon is out since they triple wammied their customer base: Price fixing by customer without notification, giving out customer info after they said the wouldn't, and upping the prices on orders after checkout. Anyway, any suggestions other than those two on a new store? Thanks in advance.
As a side note, I thought some of you might like to read this email and Express response. Not a terrible form letter response, but given that I have ordered 400+ DVDs from them I expcet something more than a form letter. A simple we hear you and a quick list of the DVDs I have ordered/preorderd (about twenty) would have kept my business. The other thing that concerns me is that they say they are unable to view, edit, or delete entries on an account (has been this way for a couple weeks). Lets be real here. That data is in a database somewhere and can be queried rather easily. I am guessing the "system upgrade" is a smoke screen for business difficulties, but I don't know their current status so I won't speculate further.
Here is the email:
I stopped by your site to check on some of my preorders to find that you
are in the middle of a "system upgrade". I have no problem with a
little inconvenience, but it has been a month or longer on some of my
orders without a message on the status. Also, several preorder movies
have come up and past on my list and I haven't received a shipping
notice, my account info is incomplete, and I haven't received a courtesy
email explaining any problems with my outstanding orders. I understand
the system upgrade message and my account info being incomplete, but as
it stands now I have no idea what is going on with my account.
To add to the difficulty, your new release section is just broke. I get
movies from 3/28/2000 to 2/20/2001, but nothing for the last month.
Also, the format is poor. Personally, the original format (same as the
preorders list) was easier to scan not to mention complete. It has been
botched up since the beginning of the year. That alone hasn't been a
huge bother since I preorder mostly and buy the ones I miss locally.
Now that your order system is in question, I am starting to get nervous
about continuing my business with express.com. I have enjoyed the
excellent service in the past and I hope you can correct the problems
shortly and get back to being the best service on the net. In the
meantime, please check on my orders, send me a status, and get back to me as soon as you can.

Dear Express.Com Customer,
Thank you for your inquiry. Express.com is currently upgrading our operating system to make our service even faster and easier to use.
It will take a short amount of time to transfer all open orders (orders that have not shipped yet) into the new system so that you can see them on the upgraded site. Unfortunately, we are unable to view, alter, or cancel orders during this time.
If you have questions or concerns regarding your order, please contact us again at the end of next week, when the transition is complete.
For more details, please visit our homepage and click SYSTEM UPGRADE on the left side of the page. Or, click HELP on any page in our store, and then click SYSTEM UPGRADE.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your patience during this transition.
Sincerely,
Richard Nathanson

I would suggest DVD Empire.
Good prices, very good shipping, great layout, and good customer service.

800.com has been a good company. some people really like dvdempire. you might even try deepdiscountdvd.com. the prices are not bad and so far they seem to really try to help customers.

DVD Empire
Checked them all out and went with DVD Empire. Just placed a large order (including a lot of preorders) so time will tell how good they are. DVD Empire shipped out about a dozen DVDs that were back ordered at DVD Express, so DVD Empires initial impression looks encouraging.
Thanks for the help.
