Amazon.com sent me a return mailer, and told me to preorder the new copy of the 26th, and send the old one back and they'll credit me later.
That's B.S. They should make a replacement order for the new copy, and when I recieve the new version then send the old version back. I guess I'll call a different customer rep! They sent a new copy before of bad dvds, and then I send back the old version but now they are screwing up big time!

Here's what I got From Amazon today:
Hello from Amazon.com.
Thank you for the information. In researching this title, I see we've been notified of the situation.
I have placed a new order (#XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXXXX) for the new version of "Leon - The Professional," and it will ship as soon as possible after the release date via Second Day Air to the same address. There will of course be no additional charge for this replacement order.
We would ask that you return the defective item so that we may obtain a refund from our supplier. Please note the defect on the return slip, or a separate piece of paper if you no longer have the slip, and return the
items in their original packaging if possible. A postage-paid return mailing label will be included with the replacement shipment for this purpose.
We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please let us know if we may assist in any other way in the future.
Best regards,
Troy M.

I called Buy.com to find out their policy of replacing LEON. The CS person I talked to did not know anything about the corrected version.
He did notice that the new version has a different SKU than the old one and told me to return my old disc to them with a prepaid UPS air bill that is on their web site.
In the mean time, he told me to reorder the title ($16.99) and it would be shipped when it comes in (presumably next week).
All in all, I thought it was pretty fair deal.

I also bought my version from Buy.com and are you saying that they want each customer to purchase a new version?
If so, No way!

In the usual buy.com fashion, it probably depends on which CSR you talk to. Someone on USENET reported that buy.com *wouldn't* replace the disc at all and that we should contact Columbia/Tri-star. I'm undecided on what to do at this point and am hoping C/TS will provide a way for people to exchange with them ala MGM. I'm just not looking forward to calling buy.com and trying to explain the situation to one of the less gifted CSRs.

I thought Buy's offer was fair (not great) because they were offering to exchange them and even pay for the shipping with the free UPS air bill.
I know Sparrow doesn't like the idea of having to pay for the disc again, but if Buy wouldn't do this, you would have to send in your old LEON and wait 2 weeks or more until they received it and processed it to send the new one back to you.
They will credit the amount you paid and charge you the same amount for the new one, so the whole thing will be a wash.

I called CTHV a few weeks ago and I just got a call from a Mr. Anthony Herron. He told me to send him my defective Leon and he would in turn send me a replacement copy. The address I'm sending it to is on the back on the DVD case.

Called Amazon today. They order a replacement at no charge and are sending labels so that I can return the defective Leon copy once I get the new one. No problems here!

Okay, I'm currently on hold with buy.com's toll free number now. (888-880-1030) Its been a couple of minutes, and I hope that this doesn't take too much longer.
I tried their email yesterday, but haven't gotten a response yet.
Total wait -- six minutes.
I'm talking to Steve -- he seems unfamiliar with the problem, but I explained that the studio recently realized that there was a "programming error" on the DVD and he said that he'll go ahead and issue a return authorization for the defective merchandise.
He's issuing an RMA number for Leon, verified the RMA number by telephone and emailed an UPS Airbill to me.
He kept using the words "probably" and "should" when I asked questions about any further costs that I may incur -- he said that I "should not be billed."
Due to his wavering, I'll be sure to include a letter with my Leon disc.
Either way, I am going to keep a copy of my notes taken during this phone call.
Good luck to others out there!

What exactly is wrong with this title? I searched the forum and found nothing explaining the problem. Won't the disc play? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me? I have a copy from amazon but haven't opened it yet.

In the Dolby Digital (5.1) soundtrack, the rear channels won't play.

Just called the wizards up, again, at buy.com. Some dude named Charles said that if it comes back before the nineteenth, then a credit will be issued. But, on the nineteenth, a scant 4 days away, the new one will be out. He said, well call us this back again then to see if anything has changed.

Well, after sending my DVD to CTHV, I get an email frm Amazon saying they will send me a new Leon via next day air with a return label for my defective one. I guess I will just send them back one of the corrected ones I'll be receiving.

After getting the run-around from Amazon.com regarding my defective copy of LEON they finally got it right.
I had called them 2 times in the past weeks about the movie but each time they told me they would send me a return label and that I re-order LEON again.
I didn't like that.
So I tried sending them an email about it last week and lo and behold they realized their error and are now sending me the new version and all I have to do is send back the other version when I get it. That's better!!
BTW, in the email I let them know I knew about their little price fluctuations and the fact that ABC NEWS and DVDTalk were hip on their shenanigans. This probably changed their tune real quick and began to see thing my way!
Thank you Geoff and DVDTalk for keeping Amazon.com in line and always being available to assist us dvd fanatics!

They were most helpful and prompt responding to the problem by sending out a new copy via DHL Express (which I received next day) and informing me to keep the duplicate copy as international return shipping cost would be prohibitive. If their ethics have been poor recently, at least their customer service is still top notch based on this particular instance and many others in my experience. <HR>
Mine just shipped. Better later than never
