I spoke with customer service and put the question to them:
"Is Express.com having problems that would affect my orders?"
The answer:
They are having server problems due to Pandesic's demise and they haven't found a new provider as of yet. This week they are working on their programs, causing glitches across the board.
His suggestion:
Keep calling if you have a shipping problem.
Makes me feel a bit better. We shall see Tuesday if my Rocky Horror and Nightmare Before Christmas ship.

I am with you on this one Groucho...I believe they are also having financial problems unrelated to the server problem!! Why should the customer have to KEEP calling to receive their merchandise?? They have really gone down the tubes fast!!!

Do you see what a can of worms this portal is? I don't think I can go on living my life as I have lived it.

Pandesic was their commerce platform - basically the backbone of their website: http://www.pandesic.com/default.htm

We can not expect that the CSR's will be honest about any problems since their jobs depend on you continuing to buy from them. Once word gets out they know the sales dry up and any chance of express.com surviving drys up with it. I wondered about their viability when they went out and spent a million dollars on the domain name express.com so that they could change the name... dumb!!! How much do you think they will get for it now

If that is true, then they are really stupid.
Think of the top web sites:
- yahoo.com
- amazon.com
- ebay.com
NONE of them have names that represent their products at all !
The word "yahoo" has nothing to do with finding something on the web, the word "amazon" has nothing to do with books (or any other product), and the word "ebay" has nothing to do with auctions!
Each of those sites made the domain name famous, not the other way around.
Instead of spending a million dollars, they should have just registered something as equally nonsensical as the above 3 famous sites, like flebs.com and then made that equivalent to DVDs.
PS This also sounds an Internet Myth. And, express.com owns "dvd.com" - why not just use that??

the whole point of buying express.com was to expand their product line beyond dvd (so dvd.com wouldn't serve that purpose.) they spent a lot of money branding dvdexpress, it wouldn't make sense to then completely switch names and brand some unrelated word.

Amazon is kinda-sorta related to books. I think the original thing was do do with the size of the Amazon in Sth America, and the rain forest-forest/trees-trees/book link. Whether that's really true or not, only Unca Jeff would know.

Jon.

Gotta agree with Groucho. Continuous calling isn't a solution. The best response my calls got from their CSRs was "I don't know" when I asked why they hadn't received my DVDs from the distributor and other e-tailers had them in stock.
There are plenty of other e-tailers out there who I'm sure would be very happy to take my money.

They also pulled the plug on a number of web sites they were hosting like voodooextreme these sites were given three days to pull the content. they were told that it was no longer part of their business model to provide the hosting. I guess the money problems are major.

A Variety article confirms that they are shutting down a bunch of Gamefan Network sites, citing that they weren't getting the appropriate "return on investment. The article points to Express.com facing a "credit crunch" due to a number of major suppliers asking that they pay for product orders upfront. Article says that executive there still downplays money woes.

This doesn't mean the end... The owner of this video store I used to work at has been operating like this for almost 3 years now - he soiled his reputation with Baker and Taylor so for awhile he had to pay upfront until they finally nixed him from purchasing at all... now he buys new releases from local costco type stores and some other B&T type places. He also had his store's neon sign reposessed for failure to pay the rent on it... he owes a ton of people money, but he's still in business and seems to be doing ok I guess. He was too cheap to update his 15 year old system for the 2000 switch, so he set the system clocks back 4 years and makes everybody sign an agreement on the reciept saying they know it is the year 2000 and not 1996.
Either way - I'd be glad to see Express go and make room for better etailers. Express sucks and their prices are too high and they charge way too much for shipping... I ordered Repo Man Tin from them and they charged my for 5 DVDs - then they send it in a Priority Mail box where a 5lb package costs the same to ship as a 1lb package. Stupid. Pass the savings on to me Express.com - you jerks.

Trigger I think you have figured out how to save express.com. Have them turn the clock back to 1996 and then the stock price will skyrocket because they are the first to sell this new and as yet unreleased technology called the DVD. They will rake in the dough

Trigger,
Great story! I was howling. You could probably write a good movie script based on the video story owner.
But didn't you leave out a few things? Doesn't he also back out of deals, and sell customer information after telling them that he wouldn't? Oh, and that his name is Bezos?
