Why doesn't Walmart have hand baskets for shopping?

It's weird the Walmart Corner Grocery near where I live has them, but the Walmart Supercenter in my area doesn't. I asked one of the greeters where the baskets were and he told me somebody stole them all..... Really weird....

I actually asked this question too once, at the one I shop at lunchtime by work. The answer was the same, that people steal them. But that they were getting a bunch of new ones in the next week. Sure enough, next time I went there they had stacks at each entrance. But they were completely gone within a couple of months.
So the question becomes, who are these people & what do they do with them? Is it the homeless who can't commit to a full cart?

I think I've been to some that do, and more that don't.
One answer - the stores are big, carrying around a basket could get heavy.
Possible answer - they do get stolen.
Real answer - people tend to buy more stuff with a buggy versus a basket.

I don't like the baskets because I like having both hands free when I shop. Sure, I could put the basket down on the floor, but... eh... I'd rather just push a cart around.

Our Walmart doesn't have them and coincidentally we were asking each other why just yesterday. They do have self-checkout, but there is always a waiting line for self-checkout too! The Fred Meyer, right across the street from Walmart has twice the number of self-checkout machines as Walmart has, we've NEVER had to wait to self-checkout at Fred Meyer. Fred's is also friendlier!
