I just got off the phone with an Amazon account specialist, as I discovered, for the second time, that my GC balance was short (this time by $20). Apparently, even though I had claimed each promotional GC (earned elsewhere - like Respond.com) at the time of each purchase, Amazon's system used the oldest GCs in the account first, even though they were not promotional ones. The promotional GCs were newer, were not applied, and therefore expired.
Amazon has sent me a $20 promotional GC which expires soon, to replace the ones that I lost. I didn't have proof the first time, but this time I had kept good records so I was able to dispute the matter.
I also asked why I have not received any of the recent $10 GCs that expire on the 22nd and was told that they were sent out randomly and they had no control over that.
Check your balances if you have been depositing your GCs into your accounts.

1. I used each promo GC at the time I made a purchase, assuming that they were being used, one at a time, at the time of purchase.
2. I find out that Amazon actually adds them to the other non-promotional GCs I already have in my account but uses the oldest GCs (that happen to be non-promo) first.
3. As they used the oldest GCs first, the promo GCs sat in my account (don't ask me how). They were not applied by Amazon, to the orders they were used on.
Hope this clarifies things.

I had a similar incident. They held a 4 item order because of this systems issue. It is ludicrous.. I still have not received the last of the 4 items due 8/29...(I just got a shipping notice on the last item).

I try to avoid this by:
1. never allowing too many GCs of any kind to build up, and
2. always paying a little cash with each order. That pretty much ensures that everything in the GC account gets used up.
Hope y'all get your messes untangled.

Do you see what a can of worms this portal is? I don't think I can go on living my life as I have lived it.
