Netflix disc rentals - please come back

I received an e-mail last week from GameFly announcing they are beta testing movie rentals as part of their service. From what I can see there is no price difference and no game/movie allotment (i.e., I am on the 2 games at a time plan; this would be 2 discs whether they are movies or games, not additional slots for movies).

Shortly after that, I received an e-mail from Netflix offering me a free month of disc rentals to come back to their disc service. I thought they were trying to get rid of the physical rentals? Is this in response to GameFly?

Probably in response to Comcast demanding they upgrade their systems.

Netflix already tried to spin off discs with qwikster.com but a bunch of people complained so Netflix backed down and kept the disc service.

They usually offer a free trial once a year for me.

Yep ... during that time period I used Netflix for my capstone project in a strategic management class. This is why it surprises me they are pushing disc rentals again. At that time they had all but abandoned the concept.

This is the first time I have seen the offer since the split.

Edit: I just realized my thread title is slightly misleading ... it sounds like I am asking them to bring back disc rentals when they are the ones asking customers to come back. Mods?

Re: Netflix disc rentals - please come back

I'm all for abandoning discs as long as they give us new movies in a timely manner. Based on how often I can actually sit down and watch a Netflix disc, it's probably wiser for me to just go VOD and stream the rest from Netflix online.

Ironically my physical copy of Dallas Buyers Club showed up in my mailbox yesterday --- literally smashed in 8 pieces (or more) -- about 1/3 of the disc was missing and not even in the envelope :lo:
