The one thing that I am skeptical about is the portrayal of the mark. He went out of his way to paint her as unpleasant, but in that situation most people would be sweet as apple pie -- she doesn't want the deal to go sour before she can sell to "Payback".

How would ebay handle this sort of thing anyhow? Since tickets are a date specific item, not like me selling a toaster or whatnot, and the lady agreed to pay that price, shouldn't she be responsible for the price of the ticket even if she decided not to go? It's like the seller said, he didn't have anymore time to try to unload them.
or would ebay just say.. file a non paying bidder claim and recoup the fees.. but he would then be SOL on the ticket prices..
or could he take her to small claims court or something?

I believe eBay would simply give the buyer a NPB ding (you are allowed only a few of these) and the seller is SOL on the purchase price. Sure, eBay would refund their fees but the seller would have to collect from the buyer on his own if he wanted restitution.

Well done! LOL, just came across this forum randomly and now i'm hooked!
A bit risky though to have payback reveal his identify. I personally wouldn't do that but this is the highly entertaining!

This is a great story. I think non-paying buyers piss everyone off, but when the non-paying buyer gives an "oh well, that's your problem, not mine" type of response, it takes it to another level -- hence the reason why the seller in this story did what they did. That being said, even if the non-paying buyer was a complete asshole towards me, I don't think I could do what's outlined in this story.

Great story, but I don't think its true. 1) Ebay no longer reveals the winner's username so she would wonder how "Payback" knew she won. 2) Crazy woman would've recognized his voice upon the second encounter 3) The buyer would have the seller's address. So if she's as crazy as the seller described, she would have no issue driving to his house and causing all sorts of Hell, instead of simply sending him an angry email.

I created a new eBay account, "Payback" we'll call it, and sent her a message: "Hi there, I noticed you won an auction for 4 [sporting event] tickets. I meant to bid on these but couldn't get to a computer. I wanted to take my son and dad and would be willing to give you $1,000 for the tickets. I imagine that you've already made plans to attend, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Re: Ebay seller tricks deadbeat buyer into paying for items
There are so many OFF THE WALL scams being perpetrated by vultures out there ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
I was a seller of a u2 vinyl rarity, and this guy from the UK tried to scam me, by AFTER "winning" the item, he paid for it, THEN after a decent interval AFTER I would have sent the item to him in the mail...which I did...he decided to cancel his paypal payment, making up some obviously flimsy excuse. His rating was fine.
FORTUNATELY my local post office caught and STOPPED the delivery as it was sitting in JFK International Airport ALMOST being sent off, and they returned the parcel back to me.
AND HE TRIED TO DO THIS TWICE. I was new at this and gave him "the benefit of the doubt".
As it was beginning of the END of the time with eBay that they were giving MORE protections for buyers than sellers, I was forced to go through this charade.
EVEN eBay couldn't figure out what this guy was doing !
But at least it was no loss to me...but I was just fortunate and had exquisite Timing !

Well she didn't sound very intelligent in the first place, contacting the fire department? lmao
This sounds to funny to be real though.
