Redbox Rentals are now $1.25/night. When did this happen?

Last week they were $1/night, I go to rent one today and it's $1.25... even though all the signage still says a $1.

Even my iPhone app says that rentals are $1.25/night now.

Weird.

Redbox Continues Testing Higher Prices
Posted by Shane Smith on Jul 05, 2010 under news

Redbox has been toying with higher price points than its famous $1 per night in select markets for a while now, and doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon. After beginning tests of higher pricing in Albuquerque last fall, Redbox has confirmed to TheWrap that tests are also under way in San Diego, Spokane, Miami/West Palm Beach and Modesto.

The pricing in the various test markets goes as follows:

Albuquerque, NM – $1.50
San Diego and Modesto, CA – $1.25
Spokane, WA – $1.15
Miami/West Palm Beach, FL – $1.15
According to a Coinstar spokesperson:

“We plan to continue the test until we can understand the implications . . . There is no definitive end date.”

Now for the big question: if any of the above prices, or something even higher, were to become Redbox’s new price point, would that affect your rental habits? How many customers, if any, would be turned off by a $.15 to $.50 Redbox price increase? Hit the comments and tell us where the sweet spot is for you when it comes to renting a DVD for a night.

(via The Wrap and The Hollywood Reporter)
Add San Antonio to the test market.

And add me to the list that were turned off by the quarter hike.

I rarely rent. Why rent for $1 when I can buy it for $5 or less in 6 months? But at $1 I was in for occasional wants, $1.50 wouldn't steer me away much, not that my ~$10 per year matters.

I don't even use all of my free monthly codes...

When Blockbuster decided to officially close shop (they did, didn't they? or is that still being strung out).

I usually rent before I buy. Why? Because I buy Blu... and they sure as hell aren't $5 in six months. Worth a buck to me to see if I really want it. Cheap insurance to keep from buying a dud.

I've bought about 300 blus, most within 6 months of release, and average under $8 per film. Others average less. It's all about being willing to buy used and reading this forum.

Geez- first they cut back the free codes from once a week to once a month, then they fix it so you can't use the same code with multiple credit cards, and now this?? It's like these people actually want to make money!

I rented a couple hundred discs last year (average of 4 every Monday) and didn't pay for a single one. Sadly that number has dropped quite a bit- of course part of it is that I now have and HDTV and usually don't want to settle for watching standard DVD if an HD disc is available.

Do you really want to own every movie you have an interest in watching, though? I learned quickly in the DVD days that no matter how cheap, I just couldn't keep on collecting the same way I did when DVDs were fresh and new. Of course, I rarely go to the theater, so maybe you guys know which movies you'll really want to keep and don't need to rent (but then you get into the whole, why pay 20 bucks for 2 people to go to a theater when you can but it for 15 bucks in a few months)

It would probably be some time before I would notice an increase in price. I enjoy the Redbox but have pretty much limited my use of it to when a free code of some kind comes along.

I just checked all the redbox's in my area on the website and they have all been increased to $1.25!

So much for the "Dollar movie rental"

Re: Redbox Rentals are now $1.25/night. When did this happen?

Some woman posted on Redbox's FB about the $1.25 and their response was:

Hi Stacy, due to a technical error, a number of customers who ordinarily pay $1.00 per night are being shown a price of $1.25 per night. We are happy to report that we quickly identified the problem, and are taking efforts to make sure that your account will not be charged $1.25. Redbox appreciates your business, and apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

I was charged $1.50 for a blu-ray at a local Redbox recently. Anyone else see this price?

Yeah, there's just so much media out there, unless it's your full time job you've gotta make some choices, both with renting and buying. I love movies, but any more than 3 a wk and it's burnout for me. Redbox is great for newer movies that I'm unsure of buying or ones I think I'll only want to watch once.

I would just be happy if blu ray was even an option at the red boxes around here.
