Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

After becoming a Netflix member, I promised myself I'd never return to Blockbuster again. Well, upon seeing that they were finally closing at least one location in my area, I ran right on in there. I saw some deals... $9.99 for a new release Wii game, every DVD was $9.99. However the Blu-ray's were still only 15% off (and many had unmarked pricing, so you have to ask), and most games were still $45 after the discount... hardly a bargain.

It would make sense to wait it out if you can... go a week later and see how much the prices have dropped. $9.99 is still expensive for most of the DVD's they're offering.

For posterity, the location closing is located at Coulwood/Mountain Island in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am going to check on more in my area other the next few weeks to see if - hopefully - they're all closing. I can put aside my hatred for BB long enough to snag a few cheap deals.

If anyone needs DVD shelving, of course, they're selling it all too.

As an aside, Jeremy Meth-head Mayfield happened to be in there when I was shopping, and he was interested in buying their security cameras, the safe, shelving... oddly all of the things you'd need to maintain your meth lab, as well as stash goods when police come knocking. I won't expect many of you to know who JM is, but for those who do, you'll be happy to know that he's still fully addicted!

Stopped by my store again tonight. Signs were up everywhere saying it was the final 3 days. DVDs were 90% off and all but a very small section were gone. Blu-Rays are still 15% off their ridiculous, marked-up prices and they have hundreds of them left. I talked to a sales rep and he said there were no plans to mark them down further or to ship them back anywhere once that store shut down for good. Really strange approach to liquidation.

Im sure blockbuster has a profitable plan for their high priced blurays.

I can also confirm that Blu-rays will not be marked down any further than what you see.

DVDs in the Mountain Island location are now down to $7.99. Might check back again in the coming week or two, as it'll be down to $5.99, and they still have every shelf completely full (and they ordered new films because they clearly didn't know they were going to be fired).

Noticed that they're selling DVD/360 cases 2 for $1, it looked like. They've also got their failed electronics division for sale. You can save a whole 10% on $35 headphones that have likely been knocked off the shelf 400 times over the past 8 years.

Blockbuster is always classy, even when bankrupt.

Online ordering isn't for everybody. So what? That is what makes the world of commerce go around.

I stopped by the one location in my area when it was I believe 2 days away from closing a few weeks ago. Blu-Rays were still 15% off while they had DVDs marked down to .99 cents. I would of asked an employee if the Blus were going down further except they had only ONE employee there total and a long line. So I said screw it and walked out.

They had TONS of Blus left as well.

Yet one could easily go to Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc and get most of the titles brand new and more than likely cheaper than Blockbuster's 15% off used.

That's because there are key titles those big box stores will use as loss leaders to get you into the store. I always thought Blockbuster should offer a few loss leaders each week too but apparently they don't find it worth it.

Blockbuster doesn't make huge profits off of retail DVDs/Blu Rays. Their biggest profitable items are the rentals and confections.

I'm not even talking about the loss leader titles. I'm talking about back catalog titles and what not. I mean seriously I know liquidators want to make a profit and all but for cripe sakes you aren't going to sell anything when I can go buy it new elsewhere for less.

My last local Blockbuster is in it's last week.

I stopped by there over the weekend, video games were 70% off. I picked three PS3 games and three X-Box games for about $30 total. DVDs were $2 each or 10 for $15, I just picked up one disk from Season 7 of the Simpsons for the kids.

Sorry, I just popped into this thread to see what was going on with BB with the new HV news, and this post irritated me.

And now you're criticizing them for giving you an EXTRA half-day? That's right, they got tired of people showing up at 12:05 AM and banging on the door and trying to get their returns in before the computers were shut down AND customers didn't want to have to hop in their car and drive over to the store to drop off the movie before they went to bed. So BB gave you until noon THE NEXT DAY as a courtesy and as a way to increase customer satisfaction. But go on, complain. Clearly nothing is acceptable to you since BB killed your father.

Right, BB killed my father and you're completely unbiased here. Please.

I was responding to a post from a BB employee who complained that customers complained a lot about late fees. And I brought up that Blockbuster was the one who started with the "no late fees" slogan, that confused a lot of customers.

Also, if I rent something on a Saturday night, and they tell me I have until Monday, I assume it's ok to return on Monday night, not Monday by noon. Even if that was a 12 hour extension, you can't tell me that that didn't confuse a ton of people. And noon? For most people that work a regular day, that means returning it in the morning that day anyway.

So two policies that, even if they were enacted as a way to help customers, just served to confuse people even more.

I honestly hope that you don't place yourself in the group of people who were "confused" by the policies. Fine if you didn't like them. Or just disregarded them since you weren't renting movies. But if you're getting your info from the newspaper or the evening news about how many people were "confused," I'd suggest you not go with those sources as "fact." I actually worked at BB (I have said it before, probably in this thread, but at least in other BB threads, so it's no big revelation) at exactly the time that "No more late fees" was put into effect.

Yes, there was a lawsuit (or two), and yes, BB lost, but basically the result was in favor of the idiot public. A vocal minority of the public was just too stupid to read the rules and understand a string of more than 4 words. Right after "No more late fees" was when their brains turned off.

So now you understand the point of it? Good, because it appeared you didn't before. Now you can see that instead of having to leave home at night to return the movie, you now had the option of still doing that if you wanted to OR returning it on your way to work the next day. And if you didn't have to work, you still had until noon to get your lazy ass to the store.

Seriously, you're complaining about things that were extended as courtesies to make things easier for people. Just because a vocal minority of people were idiots and couldn't understand the policies doesn't make the policies wrong or a bad idea or even poorly implemented. It's a shame that BB, even in its dumbed-down way, overestimated the intelligence of some of its customer base.

And don't forget: every time the movies were checked out, the clerk said "these are due back by noon on [whatever day]." [But now we'll hear stories of "But the staff at MY local BB never said that. They never said anything. Just took my money and gave me my movies." Right.]

In addition, the return deadline was printed on the receipt. Each item had its own deadline printed thereon, since you might be renting a mixture of games, new releases, family titles, etc..

Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

So you're actually saying that the "no late fees" fiasco and the "return by noon" policy weren't confusing to the public, and that they were good policies? That it was just a vocal minority of the people who spoke out against them because they were too dumb to comprehend it? I'm curious what your criteria is for a "good policy," considering that both policies were rolled back, and neither really seemed to improve blockbuster's outlook at all.

I am curious though... so your anecdotal experience in your own Blockbuster store was that people liked the no late fee changes and weren't complaining? Because the other blockbuster employee seems to like everything in the store except the "idiot customers." And every time I went to the store (as a Blockbuster online customer, when they gave out free rentals) there was a long line, mostly due to customers arguing with the people at the desk. That's not to say that the store was in the wrong, but perhaps Blockbuster catered to the "idiot customers," and thus can't complain when they misunderstood the policies. I mean who else would rent movies for full price there without some kind of coupon or discount?

The main problem I had with the noon thing was that they changed the wording on the rental. So before, you'd have a one day rental that you'd have to return by midnight the next day. After the change, they gave you another 12 hours to return it by noon the day after, but called it a 2 day rental. I'll admit, they got me with this once, when I actually went into a Blockbuster and rented a movie for the first time in years, and was unaware of the policy change.

The problem I had with the "no late fees" policy was not the wording... I fully understood that you would be charged if you kept it beyond a certain time, though I thought the wording was awful and knew people would be confused. But it allowed people to keep movies out for a longer period of time (2 weeks?), and thus the stores would not be stocked well. Individual franchises quickly found this to be too expensive and reinstated late fees, before the rest of the corporate finally got on board. I don't see how that policy was a good policy at all.

I really don't have an axe to grind with blockbuster, believe it or not. I was a user of their online service because at the time, it was a great value, and I liked perusing the video game sections.

edited to add: I'll also add that some of the guys that worked there were great. The videogame manager really knew his stuff, before that division was cut.

I know the store I USED to work at in Orland Park, Illinois is closed. As is the one in Palos. There was one in Schereville, Indiana that is also closed. Another one in or around Munster, Indiana is gone too. The Lansing, Illinois store remains open as does the Olympia Fields store. Not sure of any of the other ones around there.

Re: Blockbuster shuts down 960 stores -- if yours is closing post here

The Blockbuster in my neighbourhood in Richmond, BC, Canada is closing for good.

They shipped off all the Blu-rays to another location in Vancouver and are liquidating all of their DVDs. Most of their catalogue titles are $6.99 with 30%off and I assume the % off number will increase in the next few weeks.

It's funny people are walking around with armloads of titles, many of which can be bought brand new for the same price.

I guess it's that "Final Clearance Sale!" mentality that opens up the wallets with little regard for common sense.

I will defend Cheato just for a second here, because I run a site that had plenty of idiots whos brain was shut off the moment they heard "no more late fees", and basically thought they could keep movies forever with no penalty. Same with 12noon return time. Although it might have been better for BB to have it be from opening to noon on day of return, your "grace period" and remind folks that they should return the night before.

However they are a shitty company and I hope they die a painful death. Horrible to employees and customers alike.

I'd be really curious to hear if they actually put PV Blus up for $10. When the store closest to me went out, none of the Blus ever got below ~$15, even at the end.

I checked their store locator for my area and see that they've removed phone numbers for two stores. I'm wondering if that's a sign they're going.

Unfortunately the rental BR's are priced at $16.99 + 15% off. I only picked up Ponyo on BR and was able to get a copy of Thirst on dvd for $6.

The Stoneham, MA store started their Going Out of Business sale this week. I stopped in yesterday and as previously reported by everyone else, no deals to be had. DVDs were 9.99, and BRs were 15% off usually putting them in the $12-18 range, nothing that couldn't be purchased new for cheaper anywhere.

Despite that there were still people in there with armfuls of discs. One lady must have had 10 9.99 DVDs that she probably could have purchased online for $20 total.

The first couple weeks of a GOOB sale usually gets more profit for the company than they've seen in months. All the jamokes charge in and buy thinsg they could have gotten cheaper before the sale.

You mean New York City or New York State? Either way you're still talking a big area. I just saw the first one around here with a sign in the window about closing. But I really don't pay attention since I do online with no in-store exchanges.
