I smell a remake of a classic 80's show where "Curious Goods" becomes "The Devil's Shack."

I'm all for the name change, but only if they use the slogan:

"The Shack is the shit!"

Re: RadioShack to Become "The Shack"

I'm surprised these guys are still around. The last time I went to one was several years ago, and I needed a rather small resistor because I was swapping out the turn signals on my motorcycle.

a lot of their products have HUGE mark-up. i needed 4 N batteries, and figured, how much could it be? Well, first, the rep looked up and down, left and right in the rack and couldn't find it. so, about 10 seconds after he leaves, i check out the OTHER SIDE of the rack, and find it, but damn, it was $5 for 2, so it'd be $10 total, plus tax it'd be nearly $11, and for RS brand too. Went online, picked up 4 N batteries by Duracell for $5 shipped.

Maybe they should just call it Ripoff Shack.

oh, and with regards to cables, man, everywhere rips you off. go to Worst Buy, man, who in their right mind would pay $30 for a lousy USB cable, when for about $5 (maybe less), you can get one from Monoprice shipped to your house. and yet, there are a lot of people who buy it. i feel sorry for them.

The Shack commercials are one of the worst ads I ever seen.

I don't know about that. Remember a couple years ago...

I admit, you got me pretty good. I actually read the entire article before seeing what website I clicked onto, and I believed it.

Couldn't find the video clip for it - but this exchange from an old Simpson's Treehouse of Horror Episode always got a laugh from me:

Dr. Hibbert: We've got to find Hugo.
Homer: We'll search out every place a sick, twisted ,solitary misfit might run to.
Lisa: I'll start with Radio Shack.

I dunno, every time I need some weird little electronic gizmo or doohickey, I check out radio shack. Still, this only amounts to about one visit every 18 months. Nonetheless, they always have what I need ...

At least the store will have a hip new name while they sit empty waiting for customers to come in and buy odd sized batteries once a year.

I didn't know they still carried stuff like that.

Seems like, for the past ten years, the stores have only carried things like toys and cell phones.

My grandfather was a ham radio operator and amateur electrical engineer, and was always working on some kind of project and visited "The Shack" frequently for things like diodes and resistors. He loved the place.

I think I broke his heart when I got a Commodore 64 instead of a TRS-80.

Th shopping mall Shacks seem to mostly have consumer electronics, but the stand-alone stores still have decent selections of old-school electronic bits and bobs.

And yes, you did break your grandfather's heart. Even though I bought the 64 myself, It seemed like the 'serious' techies sort of looked down their noses at it.

Saw one of those commercials. It's really bad. It's like when the nerdy kid at school shows up in a jean jacket he begged his mom to buy in a desperate bid for coolness and just can't pull it off.

When I was buying my first cell phone ten years ago, I knew the exact phone I wanted from Sprint and they was a really good deal at Radio Shack. I went in the last day of the deal and they did not have it in stock or at either of the other two stores, but the sales person was trying to strong arm me into buying the more expensive version of the phone that could understand Spanish, which I do not speak, and a planner, that I did not need.

Instead I went online home and bought directly through Sprint and then the next day I got a phone call that they magically found the phone I was looking for in the stock room.

I have not been in a RadioShack since.
