I have responded in threads like this before and thought that I should do it one more time to address the suggestion that we raised our prices strictly in anticipation of this sale. The answer is simply that we did not.

Our prices change every day. They change for many reasons, such as when special sales (like the horror sales, recent BBC sales, box set sales, or other category sales) begin or end, they change in response to competition, or because special rebate and promotional programs from suppliers begin or end. The examples of price changes posted in this thread are examples of changes that happen every week, all year round. Some prices certainly did go up this week as special promotional sales ended or competition changed their prices (as happens every week) but thousands of titles also dropped in price for the same reasons. However, the vast majority of our titles did not change in price at all.

I’m really not trying to engage in a debate, so I won’t respond any further. I just thought that I should take the time to let you know that we did not increase prices in anticipation of this sale. Our pricing strategy was the same this week as it is every other week of the year. We do our best to bring you the best DVD deals on the web and we’re still shipping for free!

I want to thank you all for your business. For those of you who for some reason we let down in the past I hope that you’ll give us another chance to earn your business.

Thanks again and happy shopping.

All the best,

Dave

there's no pleasing some people. The tin foil hats are strong here. but in the end there is no real reason for this thread as the reason for it is totally baseless. Price changes before and during this sale are no different than those that happen all year long. people just love to bitch and feel like a victim I guess.

Hostel 2 BD $20.83 - Now $26.83
CSI S6 $29.89 - Now $34.44

So far these are the only WL changes I've encountered.

Hostel 2 come out cheaper with Amazon's B2G1 free sale .

Actually it's more of a bait technique when they just happen to change before a sale.

I'll take my business elsewhere.

Then go away.

Your "tin foil hats" accusation is as valid as me calling you a DD Kool-Aid drinker. Foolish on both ends.

If you carefully read the first post, you will see the basis for my starting this thread. Don't like it? There's no reason for you to be in here. But don't dismiss my opinion, and I won't dismiss yours. This isn't the Politics forum where everyone thinks their side is right and the other side is wrong. This is an attempt at accumulating data, not an attempt to cast blanket accusations.

And if you read the OTHER thread like this one from the last sale, you will see me in there clearly defending DD against the conspiracy theorists, as I have always done. It would be nice if DD could see this as an attempt to be constructive and informative, instead of drive-by readers like yourself taking potshots.

I want people to post price DECREASES and increases in here. That way we can see how things change, and as I clearly said in the initial post (you know, that "basis" that you think doesn't exist), it can be used for people to spot deals they may have passed on before a price reduction made it more attractive.

What are you afraid of, anyway? That there actually WILL be a pattern of price-changes that can be observed, and that you'll look like an idiot for "defending" them? Don't worry about that. You've been around long enough that I'm sure your reputation, one way or the other, is secure.

The thing that would make me happiest is that this thread could be used in the future to point to as evidence that DD DOESN'T do what so many accuse them of. As I have said repeatedly, I order from them all the time. I have two outstanding orders from about two weeks ago. I get shipping notices from them about once every two weeks, on average.

I think the concept of the thread overall is a good idea. As long as people list movies with before and after prices it can let people know that are interested in the same movies as to how good this sale is for them from previous pricing they've seen (e.g., is it really 25%, or 20%, or 10% off what they previously saw it for). More then not, I would suspect people will be more interested in posting prices that went up if they are trying to prove a negative point. But in either case it still provides value. In the end, if DDD watches it and use it to try to prevent the negative perception but using better language in their sales or better analyzing which proces should go up then all the better.

What I don't understand are the sweeping negative generalizations made against DDD based on any price increases at all. Every year there are comments such as "they raise ALL their prices before the sale". While some may rise they always seemed to be minimal in comparison to the large quantity that they sell where the prices stayed the same. I think the thread would have the most benefit if we could just list the facts and leave out the generalizations in either direction.

Personally, I'm just looking for deals. If it is only 15% less then earlier in the year it is still probably better then any other price I will find this year, except for maybe some B1G1 free deals. I just wish I had more to spend.

Some of the titles that went up did so significantly. I couple I really had my eye on will wait to see if the price drops. Still, as BSmith said, I'm just looking for deals. I don't see any evidence of blanket price increases before the sale and never have. Am I dissapointed that some things went up? Very much so, but as I said, I can wait. There is enough in my list that I had no problem finding something to order other than attempting to second guess future sale prospects and making sure I could not better a selection with a CH account cycle.

Actually, my list points to consistency in pricing and/or lowering of prices as only 11 items in this rather large list went up in price.

^Agreed.

I have over $1,000 worth of stuff on my wishlist, and I don't think a single thing has increased in price in any significant way in the past few days.

Over the years, I have noticed a few occasions where items in my wishlist went up in price before the "big sale," I haven't noticed any kind of pattern or agenda.

another thing id like to mention is that the annual (hopefully from now on 25%) sale doesnt always have the cheapest prices from dd for the year. from my own experiences, many a time, a few sales just before and right after end up netting a lower price on select titles.

hey, for some of us, thats the fun part of the "hunt"

I'm not "afraid" of anything. It's just that these threads are started during every sale, and every time they are pointless whining about a supposed 'wrong' that doesn't exist. it's stupid and pointless. But, as I said, some people are simply unwilling to believe that because it makes them feel better to have a company doing them wrong. It's all rather silly. Be thankful for the sale and buy what you want, don't buy what you don't want. I just don't understand why people think they are owed some magical lowest price and see any price increase as some nefarious plot.

Once again, the purpose of this thread is as follows...

^If you have something useful to contribute to the thread, then please do so. Drop the lols, as they're not impressing anybody. I'm sure that they help you sleep better at night wrapped in your blanket of superiority, but they're serving no purpose here for discussion.

As far as I have seen, you have had no price changes (up OR down) to report, and you haven't reported that everything on your want-list has stayed the same.

In other words, I could be wrong, but the main purpose that you seem to have for posting in here seems to be either to (a) educate the poor uninformed fools who obviously don't see the facts that you see, regardless of your lack of data to back them up, or (b) try to add fuel to what you perceive as a fire.

I believed it was inevitable that someone would start a thread claiming wholesale price increases, and that it would then be filled with rants from both sides. To head that off, I started a thread providing real and accurate information, and gave people a place where they could post real data, and where others with such conspiracy theory beliefs could see that real data that would possibly change their minds. And, of course, there was also the possibility that the conpiracy theorists were right (this time), and that only by having real data would we be able to see that.

So, please stop with the blanket statements and attempts to diminish or dismiss other people's posts. And if you can explain the true reason for the few observed price changes by citing specific sales or promotions that ended prior to the start of the current sale, as well as the before and after prices or such items, then please do so. If not, and if you can't stick to the purpose of this thread, then once again, please go away.

^^^^BobO'Link, a big, diametrical thank-you for providing a ton of info. I hope you are using a spreadsheet for that. I am using a copy/paste into Excel, and letting Excel handle the calcs, but I wish I knew more about parsing webpage data so I could make something like what mnementh uses and have it be more automatic.

Final note: there have been no price-changes in my want-list for the past couple of days.

I'm holding out for Amazon BOGO sales on Blu-ray titles unless DD has one. I ordered a few from DD, but they were Echo Bridge titles. I think I'll be buying fewer non-Blu-ray titles this year and more on HD (Blu-ray and some HD DVD titles). In fact, some of the DVDs I bought last year, I'm scratching my head on why I bought them when the Blu-ray version is out, so this year I'm taking it slow and easy.

Well, they could be informative if I'm purchasing some titles, and discover somebody comments about them increasing in price. I would then look elsewhere. Sometimes when a company has a 25% OFF sale, you automatically think you're getting the best deal--you WANT to believe this. But it helps when somebody and a few other somebodies say, "Hey, hold on a minute. The price on such-and-such has increased by 15% since last week."

Yeah, I'm waiting for BOGO or something good on Blu-Ray titles and kind of hoping for a fire sale on HD-DVDs. I still ended up ordering 51 titles (49 of them SD), which is actually the largest DVD order I've ever placed. I spent 5 hours or more comparing prices and loading my cart on both DD and DVD Planet. There are a lot of TV shows I wanted to pick up, but I'm still trying to eliminate my VHS collection (no thanks to the lack of DVD transfers of a lot of titles). There's also the possibility of TV shows going BOGO sometime before Xmas, so I figured I'll get whatever I can on sale and plan on catching up in June.

Doctor Who Series 4 is currently $67, but is a pre-order. I fully expect the price to increase next Tuesday (otherwise I'd be paying $50). My thought is I'll end up getting it from Amazon for the best price (which is currently $65).
