CompUSA closing

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119...p_us_whats_news

No open thread to discuss this. I thought they were already closed. Anyone with a store near them see any decent deals?

So true.

I for one, will not miss this place. They have been useless for 10 years now. They chose not to evolve like other places did and now they will die off.

I worked there for a couple of years awhile ago and guessed what they would do before I checked out to see if there were sales. Everyone knows that what passes for "clearance prices" is an absolute joke. I was even more surprised to see that nothing was marked down except for the super old crap that was already on clearance. I found a HTPC case that I wanted, but it was missing a couple things since all they had was a display demo. I talked to the manager and they no longer have the ability to play with prices at all.

I'm not even going to bother going back until after Christmas and see if anything's changed.

My local CompUSA still has N64 games as of 4-5 months ago...for $39.99 (some wrestling/sports crap). Amazing.

Last year I bought a Pioneer Tivo DVD recorder on clearance at Compusa for -$15AR. I'm still kicking myself for not buying the second one sitting on the table.

Never bought anything else there which may explain why they are shutting down.

My Compusa's already closed last winter or the winter before. I always preferred Micro Center but I have noticed over the past few years the number of shoppers there has been declining rapidly that I will even go there on the weekend which I used to avoid. I still find Micro Centers policy of asking for you to say and spell your name when paying at the register annoying. Why not just issue a tracking card thing like every place else?

To me this is very funny, since I was discussing with some friends of mine that CompUSA was going the wayof the dodo as soon as a Best Buy is put on the island. Guess what? Both Best Buy and Circuit City are a couple of month away from opening their stores here and CompUSA is already out.

My only question is what is going to happen to the extended warranties? I had several products with extended warranties that I had purchased there.

What does the military have anything to do with CompUSA closing?

From what I have read, most extended warranties are with a third party. A totally seperate company that handles the warranties. YOu might want to pull out your paperwork and see what it says about that.

The last thread discussing CompUSA's closing got sidetracked by several people arguing about military procedures and wrongdoing.

Hopefully that is just the preliminary markdowns and they will go up in the coming weeks. Like the last time they closed stores.

My newspaper this morning had a going-out-of-business sale listed for CompUSA only it wasn't called that. I thought they would wait for the new year.

I checked out our local CompUsa today. It was a bad sign when I saw a steady stream of people leaving the store completely empty handed.

It looks like they jacked up every price in the store to full retail, and they're currently taking discounts off of that price. Unfortunately, the discount percentages they're currently using are very low at the moment, with many new sale prices actually higher than they were PRE-liquidation. What this means is that you would see a pre-liquidation sale tag that says "$1200", but with a new liquidation sticker on top of it that says "Was: $1400. Now: $1260!"

I went to our local store yesterday. Discounts are slightly deeper on some items, but there are still very few deals to be found. Desktops and laptops (PC and Mac) are still only 5% off, but there isn't a Mac left. iPods are also only 5% off, although iPod accessories are 30% off now. Movies (including HD-DVD and Blu-Ray) are still 20% off.

I would have thought that they would be in more of a rush to shut things down now that the holidays have passed, but I guess not. I am still getting the e-mail blasts advertising new sales/promotions, not one of which has mentioned that the stores are going out of business.

Was in a store last night. Games and accessories were 15% off. Some decent deals to be had.

I was in a CompUSA over the weekend and didn't notice many good deals to be had. Most of their computer hardware is overpriced even with a 10-15% discount, which I guess is indicative of why they're going out of business.

I did pick up a couple older PC games with the 10% discount, which wasn't a bad deal.

However, if you need shelving or register lights, get over there! I briefly thought about buying a register light just for the hell of it, but didn't.

I went to my Comp USAtan last night. They had big 30% off signs obscuring every inch of window and door out front. Inside, there was precious little that had been marked down more than 10%.

Same thing in the 3 CompUSAs here. A big 30% off in the windows but almost everything inside 10-15% off.

I went in on my lunch break and found the same thing as most people. TVs were 20% off, but still not a good enough deal for me to pull the trigger.

There is an ad in the local paper here every 2-3 days.

I laugh because it says 10-30% off and in small print, *computers 5% off*

5 percent is nothing.

Still, to be honest, I haven't gone there since the sale started.

Planning to go Sunday.

Anyone know when the discount for movies will go from 20% to 40%-50%+?

There were some Blu-Ray discs at my local CompUsa that I wanted to pick up.
