Best Buy only allow 1 return w/o receipt per year, so if you return 1 item by the end of this year w/o receipt, you can do 1 more after 12/31. They track this by using your driver license, so if you need to do this more than once this year, bring your friend with you and use his DL.
Also, they only credit back the sale price for you on a Gift card, moreover, they only let you return stuff you can find in their stores. So, for example, if you're returning something you can find on BestBuy.com but the item show "limited availability for store pickup" or "Not available for store pickup," then the chances are, the item cannot be return to stores because they don't carry this particular item in stores.

I need to return the Stanley Kubrick box set and I don't have a receipt. Is there a way to check the past price of an item? It's listed at $69.99 on the website now, but I think it was around $55 release week.

Do you have a Borders nearby? You could exchange the set there without a hassle, and use the credit at Borders.com which is run by Amazon.

That definitely sounds like my best option. I could just go there and would get a $69.99 credit which is the current price?

Not for much longer. Borders is going to sever their relationship with Amazon at the beginning of next year and sell on their own site.

Thanks for the reminder. I've a ton of Borders GCs racked up from Discover/unwanted gifts, so I should probably get moving redeeming them.

I would. I highly doubt that Borders web prices will be as cheap as the prices at Amazon.

If I lost the receipt but I paid with a credit card for the item that I want to return, can Best Buy look up the purchase information with my credit card number ?

If "no", if I called the 1-800 Best Buy consumer #, would they be able to look up any information about the purchase so as to make it possible to return the item without a receipt ?

I tried returning something without a receipt the other day (I bought it there- really!), and their policy now is no returns without a receipt, period. I wasn't very happy, considering the item even still had their price tag affixed to it! I would have been perfectly happy with store credit. *sigh*

Thank you both for your replies and your help.

In case this will help someone else with the same question, I wanted to share what I learned/what happened to me.

Before returning to the store, I started by calling 888-BESTBUY and was transferred to the "Receipt Department". After giving the agent my name and after verifying the phone number already on file, he could only find purchase information from a year ago and suggested that the "Consumer Relations Department" might have better luck in finding the recent purchase information because that department "has a wider database".

The "Consumer Relations Department" agent started out by repeating the same step as the "Receipt Department" agent and likewise didn't come up with anything. She then asked me for the credit card number and said she would try and see if she could pull up any information with that; she explained that Best Buy is slowly removing from their computer systems the ability to use a credit number to look up purchase information.

Luckily, she was able to pull up the information and then at that point explained that she was able to give me four key pieces of information that a store needs in order to ( a ) look up a purchase without a receipt and/or ( b ) print a duplicate receipt:
- store number
- register number
- transaction number
- transaction date

She also offered me the option of having her department mail me a duplicate receipt if I was not interested in driving to the store to obtain one.

She told me that there are two other possible ways to look up purchase information:
- if the customer is a member of the Best Buy RewardZone program and, at the time of the purchase, had told the store employee his/her RewardZone membership number
- if there was a gift card involved (e.g., the customer had paid with a gift card, or the store had given the customer a gift card at the time of the purchase as a special bonus for purchasing that item)

Later that day, I drove to the store, handed those four numbers to the customer service desk, and the employee was literally instantly able to not only generate a duplicate receipt but also credit my credit card for the amount of the item that I was returning that day.

Now, the store employee did say one thing that is a possible contradiction of the information told to me by the 888BESTBUY agent. The store employee claimed that the Best Buy stores are retaining the ability to use your credit card number to look up a purchase if you don't have your receipt with you.

Also, the store employee made one error that a supervisor had to correct. As far as the item that I was now returning, at the time of the purchase the store had given me a $ 20 gift card. Now that I was returning the item, I had two choices regarding the gift card: (1) keep the gift card and use it at my leisure (supposedly there is no expiration date) or (2) give the store back the gift card. If you give back the gift card, the amount of that gift card is supposed to be credited back to your credit card. This employee neglected to do that, and luckily I spotted that error on my receipt before leaving the store.

So you're saying they allowed you to keep a gift card that you received when you purchased the item originally even after you returned the item?

Hi

no.

I'll try to clarify. A week ago, I had purchased two items -- one was ~ $ 200 and the other item was a router on sale for $ 119.99. At the time of the router being rung up, there was some kind of special promotion that I was unaware of resulting in receiving a $ 19.99 Best Buy gift card for purchasing that particular brand (and, I guess, that particular model) of router.

The other night when I returned to the store, after all was said and done, I learned I had two choices in making the return of the router:

(1) return the $ 119.99 router but keep the $ 19.99 gift card, and receive a credit of $ 100 plus tax

or

(2) return both the $ 119.99 router and the $ 19.99 gift card, and receive back on my credit card a credit of $ 119.99 plus tax

I didn't want the gift card, so I had given back to the employee both the router and the gift card. She issued me a credit, and printed two receipts (both a duplicate purchase receipt and a return-receipt).

Before walking out of the store I was taking a close look at the receipts: the return receipt showed that I had received a credit totaling ~ $ 109, but there was nothing on the return-receipt reflecting that I had also given the store back the gift card. I had never before returned an item when there was a gift card involved, but it felt like the amount of the credit back to my credit card was not the right amount although I was too tired to be certain.

So I walked back to the counter and this time a supervisor happened to be there; he took a look and caught the mistake the previous employee had made -- the store now had both both the router and the gift card, but the first employee had rung up a return of only the router.

So he canceled out everything and this time correctly processed into the computer my having returned both the router and the gift card. And this time what my new return-receipt showed was a credit to my credit card totaling $ 129.71 (119.99 plus 9.72 in tax).

I apologize for not explaining things clearly enough in my previous post.

I rarely buy anything from bestbuy besides black friday. Well, i got the emachines desktop package for $200 but it somehow got rung up wrong and i was charged $350. So I go in 2 weeks later w/ my credit card and CC statement used for the purchase to get it straightened out. I give the guy all the relevant info and he claims he can't look it up. I'm getting ticked b/c it was on a $1200 purchase list and he couldn't find any of it.

So I go to my car and find the receipt but just for kicks I go to a different CSR w/o the receipt. Amazingly, she was able to pull up the receipt w/ no problem and issued the credit back.

Needless to say, I had a chat with a manager about CSR #1.

I did a return without a receipt 10 days ago and experienced no problems whatsoever. I also got the full amount for my items. They didn't deduct the rumored 30%. I cannot speak for the last week or so.
