You could go to a Best Buy or other electronics store (not Circuit City, since they use a different store security system) with the item in a Borders bag. You'll get a beep as you walk in to the store. Get a pink sticker from loss prevention and then go over to CS and ask them to deactivate it to "save me from embarrassment when I leave."

Or just back to Borders at a different day and time, such as Sunday evening if you were denied on Thursday afternoon.
