Breaking Street Dates

I don't know if this was posted before. If it was, sorry.

Does anyone know how you report a store that breaks street dates?

I know it sounds mean, but my boyfriend and I have had SO many problems with this type of thing. They're all really long stories, but some of them pissed us off so bad that we said we were going to report them, but we just don't know how.

I'd really like to hear an example or two about how a store breaking the official street date caused you so many problems. I am intrigued!

I'd like to know why it pissed you off as well. I love with stores break the official street date.

Well, we've had plenty of incidents with them, but to make a long story short---we've gotten turned down for jobs in these stores so that they could be given to people that don't even know what street dates are, let alone when they are.

Second, I love it when stuff is out early too, at a Best Buy, Circuit City, or Target...I jump all over it. But those aren't the stores I'm talking about. I'm talking about FYE, Saturday Matinee, and Coconuts, where if they put something out early, you would have to pay through your ass.

Why don't you just ignore those stores and shop elsewhere, if this practice so offends your sensibilities. It definitely sounds as if there is more to your rant than we are learning from your comments here.

That's ridiculous...You have something against these stores so you want to report them. I could see if you owned a shop and it caused you to lose buisness, but just because you have some personal grudge against them, you want to make everyone else who actually may frequent these stores pay?

Exactly...because maybe there is stuff that I don't want to go into on a public board, if you read my first post. All I did was ask a simple question.

I should have known that this board would get up on their moral high horse.

How is this any different than the people that took advantage of Target's $5.99 box set price mistake? Target certainly paid for that one.

My local Walmart here in MA breaks street date on some of the lesser known dvd releases, especially the WWE wrestling releases. You will be hard pressed to find a store break street date on a major release, they know they can get in big trouble. The local FYE, Coconuts, etc do the same as Walmart for the less known ones...

That's the thing. We've been in stores that had *everything* out. We were even in one, where when the employee found out, he replied by saying he knew, we shouldn't say anything, and they're trying to get people to pay more for it before they can get it anywhere else. For example, they had Married With Children out, and were selling it for the MSRP, so people who didn't know would buy it there before they can get it for cheaper at a Best Buy or Circuit City, etc.

You can't have your cake and eat too..talking about moral high horses. You will jump all over an early release that you know about but report another store you have problems with personally because they too release early. If it is at MSRP then they are entitled to sell at that price and the consumer does not have to buy if he doesn't want too.

Years ago their used to be a hotline but that was before the Best Buys, Circuit City's, Walmarts, etc... came around. When I worked in retail our policy was once another store broke the street date we could. Usually Sears would be the first in the mall to break the street date so then Sam Goody and my store, Saturday Matinee, could do the same thing.

The problem is that Best Buy and the other big chains buy in such quantity that no studio is going to go after them for breaking a street date when it may cost them money in the long run. Bottom line is their is nothing you can do about it except stopping shopping in the stores that do it. It won't matter to them but at least you won't have to deal with the frustration you are going through now.

You want to report them because they don't want to hire you?

Only reason I can see for anyone to be upset is when they show up at the store on the advertised release date and they've already sold them all earlier.

Happened in many targets and walmart with the Nintendo DS a couple weeks ago. i.e. the one in Rockville, MD sold them all over a week a head of time, and didn't have any for release date. I tried to get one early, but was too slow, picked one up at the circuit city up the road, and heard people bitching about it in Target when I swung by to pick up some other things on the way home.

I do admit its snarky for FYE and other overpriced stores to put out stuff early to sell it at a premium to those that much have it ASAP.

But hey, if people are dumb and geeky enough to pay MSRP to have something early, more power to them.

Wow...if you could read, you would see that that wasn't what I was complaining about.

And once again, how is this any different than taking advantage of a store price mistake.

As for the topic-nevermind, I found out the information I needed elsewhere.

I think all of you people need to sit back and realize that you would all be the first to run out and take advantage of a store's price mistake (i.e. Target $5.99). BUT you all act like you're saints when something like this comes up.

It's okay for a store to pay for a mistake when you benefit from it, right?

Anyway, end of discussion. I've heard your end, you've heard my end. I got my information. Case closed.

People actually get something out of taking advantage of the price mistake--namely an item at a great price.

You get nothing out of reporting them, other than satisfying some grudge you and your b/f have for whatever reason, and rain on the parade of the fools that are willing to pay MSRP to get something early.

Hmmm, perhaps the store enrolls them in their extensive "Know Your Street Dates" course which probably takes all of 5 - 10 min. to complete after they are hired.

Well said Josh Hinkle.

Sabrett, the way you've described everything makes you look really petty for no reason other than you just want to be difficult. Perhaps if you actually described your situations more clearly it would all make more sense, but I doubt it. From the two examples given earlier, it just doesn't add up to me:

With that one it's just you guys holding a grudge against a store.

Second, I love it when stuff is out early too, at a Best Buy, Circuit City, or Target...I jump all over it. But those aren't the stores I'm talking about.
With that you admit to taking advantage of stores breaking the street date and saying that you "love" it.

And with this it's you acting like you're forced to "pay through your ass". If other people want to pay the high prices at those stores, let em. It isn't going to affect you either way, so why care?

So because stores didn't want to hire you (Either because your underage, underqualified, no sales skills, etc) you want to bust them? Wow. Someone has a big ego...
