New Amazon.com Pre-order policy?

Hey gang,

I got the following email this afternoon:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We have new information about your order and need to hear from
you before proceeding.

It has come to our attention that
the price of the following item has increased:

Teddy Geiger "Underage Thinking" [Audio CD]
OLD PRICE NEW PRICE
$10.97 $11.96

We hope you will understand that, with several million items listed on
our web site, it is unfortunate but inevitable that some items will
occasionally be mispriced. In accordance with the pricing policy posted
on our website, we are contacting you to obtain your approval of the new
price before proceeding with the order.

Please follow the link below to the approval page on our web site.
From here, you will have the opportunity to approve the new price
or to view your Order Summary where you will be able to cancel
items from your order. You may also approve or cancel this item
by reviewing your order history from the "Your Account" link on
our home page.
I've pre-ordered hundreds of times from Amazon.com and even when the price went up later they didn't charge me more, or hold my order ransom. I cancelled the order, I'm certain I can get the CD at BB for cheaper on its release day. But I'm concerned that this is a new policy for Amazon where they don't honor pre-order prices. I just wanted to make the public aware.

i wonder if they'll do the same if the price goes down. i know when i ordered harry potter and the preordered price went down, i had to email them to credit me back. and after they did that the price still went down another 10 cents. i let that go though...

When I pre-ordered HP4 (at 19.96), the price went up $2 but I didn't get that message and got the DVD for that price... Now, I have gotten that message when it an egregious misprice (like 70%+ off). In this case, even though it was only $.99, maybe it was a misprice.

I would think it's a misprice or an adjustment in MSRP. I don't think Amazon would send you the message if they were just changing their sale price to their regular price.

It was a pre-order. I placed the order in early February, before Love Monkey got cancelled, and it is released next week. DeepDiscountCD has the same album for 10.96, and Best Buy is running it for 11.98. This just seems SO odd.

One dollar hardly seems like enough to justify creating ill-will with their customers.

I've never had that message, and only once out of who the hell knows how many pre-orders did I ever get a message telling me they lowered their price (not MSRP) and they would adjust the order automatically (which they did)..all the others I had to request a refund of the diff back..

I think it's purely for mispriced items. They clearly state stuff like "Preorder now and save!" so it can't be a new policy on preorders. That's one of the reasons they get us to buy from them, because with good preorder prices they lock us in early. Luckily we can change our minds later, but that's getting a bit off topic. I'm pretty sure the price-change email is only for actual mispriced items.

Nope. I preordered 2 Disney Treasure tins last Christmas and they didn't adjust the price for me when they lowered it near the release date. The difference is only a dim or so, therefore I didn't make a fuss about it.

I ordered the CD from DeepDiscountCD for 10.49, shipped. Sure I won't get my 2-day shipping for free, via Prime, but I'm okay with that.

This has to be a first, since they send me an email reducing the price of a DVD I ordered without me emailing them before:

From Amazon.com:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We are pleased to report that the price of the following item
has decreased.

Pinal/Rabal/Rey (Actor), Bunuel (Actor) "Viridiana" [DVD]
OLD PRICE NEW PRICE
$20.99 $19.96

Your order total will be adjusted accordingly, and when the item is
shipped, the amount you pay will reflect the new, lower price(s).
I hope this trend continues everytime they lower a price.

So maybe they are doing it automatically now.. whether the price goes up ... or down.

If so, this sucks (if the price goes up ). You enter an agreement with them to buy something at the price listed when you placed the order, not when they decide down the line that it's cheaper or more expensive.

Better to have the money in your pocket than theirs.
