The Death of Blockbuster

I think the 'late fee' thing varies per store, in some cases. I have been with BBO for over a year, and have used the two coupons each month. The two cases I can remember where I've been 'charged' for a game I returned on time, were both from the same store, a store I don't go to that often. The last time, I called up and said "I got the call saying I owed money, but I returned the game" "clickclickclick-You sure did, I'll take it off." And the other time, I had gone to my 'regular' store, and they wanted to bill me for the late fee at the other store--but I basically said, "Hmm, no, I returned that on time and I'm not paying." So there's something going on at the other store, either technical difficulties or some lazy/clueless person working there.
Not honoring a card that's still valid, yeah, that sucks.
I do agree, they're the 800-lb gorilla, and many of their practices show that. A financial crisis could serve to shake them up and turn them a little more customer friendly. Maybe.
I think there's still room for a B&M, either for sales or rental. There are still lots of people who either don't want to wait, don't live on a computer, or don't trust credit card information across the net. I also don't think VOD, either thru cable companies or broadband internet, is all that attractive yet either [although cable VoD is better than downloading movies].

Ever since I began renting online Ive never thought twice about renting anymore its too much hassle. I love being surprised to see whats come in the mail as oppose to being surprised by a late movie call on my answering machine in the old days. The only time I rely on video stores now is for the PV titles.

And that dichotomy is, unfortunately, a holdover from the go-go 80's and overpriced, instant return 90's. Making a profit and taking care of the customer are *not* mutually exclusive, unless you're only interested in extremely short-term profits.

When I was in high school, a friend worked at our local Blockbuster and was fired for appearing on the local news on a story about people working on Thanksgiving. He got permission from his boss, but the company fired him anyway. I didn't go back for a long time and even then only when I was forced to. The local Family Video chain was much better and got the unrated versions of movies and had a back room. They were also considerably cheaper. Each time I see a Blockbuster store close, I feel bad for being happy, but they're really terrible. Also, whenever you get anything used from them, they have the worst stickers. Especially old VHS titles.

Whether it was stores screwing up checking in returns or an actual scam, I don't know. But Blockbuster's whole "false" late fees issue was such a prevalent practice throughout the chain that they lost a class-action lawsuit over it. (And, as far as I know, no other large video chain has been sued over this same issue.)

Like alot of people here, i've been hearing about the downfall of BB for quite awhile. One of the stores closed in town here, which isn't surprising because there are 3. But the one thing i know is that the rental industry will go through major changes in the next year or so. The company i work for has closed at least 3 stores in the past year. Which is nice for me because i get to cherry pick their inventory but its getting very tight in the video rental industry, and the new HD/Blu Ray DVD's could potentially bury alot of the smaller market stores. I know a few of the managers for my company are thinking about jumping ship soon just to avoid the possibility of going down with the ship.

Kick back, watch it crumble
See the drowning, watch the fall
I feel just terrible about it
That's sarcasm, let it burn
I'm gonna make a toast when it falls apart
I'm gonna raise my glass above my heart
Then someone shouts, "That's what they get!"
The dinosaurs will slowly die
And I do believe no one will cry
I'm just fucking glad I'm gonna be
There to watch the fall
See the drowning, watch the fall

Blockbuster killed the rental market in the UK. More bulk less choice.
I'm sure someone will buy the name for web rentals (and eventual downloads (the UK's L-o-v-e-F-i-l-m* has started downloads (Oliver Stone's Alexander being the first trial -I suppose they had to do something to increase the sales of it
))) as it is a well known name."Blockbuster" to means censorship, 'family' movies, dumb people, shit selection and all wrapped up in stores that look like airport lounges from the 70s and smell like burned down candy stores.
I think Blockbuster were owned by Universal Vivendi at some point and they dumped them. No money in large chain rental stores now I'd say.

The other BB's around Knoxville blow goat ass, but this one simply excels in all ways.

Of course, the people who owned Blockbuster and ran Blockbuster and made it into the company that everyone seems to hate aren't the same people who own it and run it now.
Wayne Huizenga owned it through it's original growth phase and sold it to Viacom in 1994. In late 2004, Viacom cashed out and spun the Blockbuster off into a separate entity and have, as far as I know, divested essentially their entire stake in the company (at a tremendous loss).
I hardly ever rent anymore anyway (except for Netflix), and the $4 to $5 price for a rental doesn't seem worth it to me. So, if they go, it won't make much difference to me. It's just interesting to me to see the how hated a company can become (and how people hold on to things that aren't even true anymore. Full-screen promoting asses? While that was once the case, in 2003, they went widescreen almost exclusively).

I haven't rented a movie or video game in about 2 years.
Why bother? I'll buy the movies that I REALLY want to see and watch them when I want.
I don't plan on renting anytime soon..

Good news. Blockbuster is the Walmart of the video renting racket. They swoop in, put the competition out of business and rake in the cash. The actual day can't come too soon.

About ten years ago I was locked in the entry way of the Blockbuster in Aston, PA. The store had just closed; the outer door was locked (I didn't know) but slightly ajar and the inner door was locked. As soon as I walked through the outer door it locked behind me. I stood there knocking on the glass, but the employees just kept saying they were closed and telling me to go away. Finally a blue shirt came to let me escape. If BBV goes out of business I will never have the chance to relive that experience.
