DVD Soon- Does This New Deal Seem Crazy To You?

This seems awfully unreasonable to me...I have to spend $10 000 just to save 12% and $50 000 to save 20%?! Just last month they gave 14% off everything automatically in celebration of valentines day! I don't know many people that spend $50 000 a year on dvds. Anyone else find this to be kind of a ripoff?

Hello,

DVDSoon.com is proud to announce to all its Fidelity iCard members that it has
created a new rewards program!

Now, different classes will be attributed with respect to your annual purchases.
With each new level, a higher savings pourcentage will be attributed to you.
Also, you can accumulate even more Fidelity iPoints.

Grade Discount Minimum yearly purchases(CAD) iPoints
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Base 10% 0 1 iPoint per $1 CAD
Gold 12% 10 000 2 iPoints per $1 CAD
Platinum 15% 30 000 3 iPoints per $1 CAD
Diamond 20% 50 000 4 iPoints per $1 CAD**

* Minimum sales calculated in reference of the last 12 months.

** + $5 coupon, valid for a minimum order of $50.00 CAD.

Promotion valid until december 31, 2005

I was just about to post this as well.
It seems like an unreasonably ridiculous amount of money! I have been very pleased with dvdsoon so far, this only makes me wish I had ordered even more stuff last month during the 20% off sale. I was hoping 15% and 20% off promos would be regular features, but this email seems to suggest otherwise.
Is it possible dollar values of the "Minimum yearly purchases(CAD)" are not correct? There is no way in hell anyone can spend 50,000 a year on DVDs!

I'm sure hoping its an error if they arent going to make the 15%-20% promos from now on I might have to look elsewhere, unfortunately nothing comes cheap in Canada. I think I will be emailing them tomorrow and asking them about this....I'm pretty dissapointed!

They're touting this as a benefit but it is ridiculous. Who is going to spend even $10,000 in a year, even in Canadian money? And that just gets you an extra 2%.

I think they were probably "too successful," especially with the 25% off in Dec/Jan and the 20% off in February. I wondered how they could be making money at those discounts off their already good discounts. I've gone on a crazy buying spree but I still haven't spent even $1,000CAD in 2½ months (I added it all up: $788.84CAD, including the $49.98CAD Fidelity charge). The new "deal" seems to be to try to control something that may have gotten away on them.

Anyone else notice that they have also had big price increases almost across the board? Many DVDs that were $20.98 to $24.98 are now $25.98 and many that were $9.98 are now $15.98. Box sets that were $51.98 are now $55.98 (all CAD prices).

The party was fun while it lasted but it appears to be over.

Better news: There is a new coupon that can be combined with the 10% off and get you another 10% off for a total of 20%:

TIMESMA05

This is supposed to be good from March 4 to April 30 and be unlimited use.

I'm going to wait awhile and see if their recent price increases come back down. Last month, after changing the discount from 14% to 20% they had similar price increases which came back down in about a week.

Reports of the end of the party may have been premature.

Mods: there is a similar thread in DVD Bargains:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=413273

(Thanks to gjamesm for posting the coupon in that thread. I checked it out to find out the valid dates and the unlimited use info.)

The two threads should probably be merged.

That coupon makes me very happy ... I shall have to try it out!
Thanks to gjamesm for posting it. I wonder if it one use only or something?

I am about to send an email to dvdsoon regarding the ridiculous spending amounts required for the membership upgrades.

Sorry. I read "supposed to be good from March 4 to April 30" as an unsure guess. This is great news. The new James Dean collection is now up for pre-order!

It wasn't an unsure guess, it's what they stated.

I said "supposed to" because DVD Soon always reserves the right to change or cancel a promotion at any time. But I've never seen them do so except to make it better.

Sorry for the confusion.

I noticed the price increases as well.

Also, how did you find out about that coupon?

Looks like they fixed it--now says $1000, $3000 and $5000--much more reasonable--still doubt i'd spend $5K though

Sad to say, but they are raising the prices on most of the stuff in coordination with this new promotion.

They're just trying to make it easier for you to reach the 5K mark!

It looks as thou it is calculated based on the pre-discount price of your purchase. I have spent about $850 after the 20% discount. But totalling those sales up without the 20% off would mean I have spent over a grand.

I figured that must be the case. I'm at $1,015.20CAD before discounts ($788.84CAD after). As I've already gotten so much of what I wanted to preorder including a bunch of box sets, I probably won't make it to the next level ($3,000) this year.

Are the discs you get from them any different than if I go down to Best Buy, Traget or the like and pick something up off the shelf?!

Specifically, I'd like to pick up some TV sets, but not if they aren't the same quality and packaging as what I currently have in a series.

sometimes they are. Sometimes they have bilingual covers with French on them.

Just make sure that you match up the UPC #s before you buy them. You can check on DVDProfiler or at DVDEmpire.com or some site like that.

Allright! The prices seem to be going back to normal. This is exciting news.
Placed another order today (all prices are Fidelity iCard discount combined with TIMESMA05 coupon in CAD):

Laura 7.78
Casino:10th Aniversary Edition 14.02
Call Northside 777 7.78
Panic in the Streets 7.78
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 12.46
Grapes Of Wrath, The 8.56
TOTAL = 62.49 CAD w/ taxes

It is like a perpetual DDD sale.

Although the TIMESMA05 code was supposed to be for unlimited use until April 30, I got the message: "Single Use Coupon Already Used" (I had used it twice).

But there are at least two other codes:

SWAPSMA05 (another supposedly unlimited use but who knows?)

SEARCHMA05 (from DVD Price Search, says one use only)

Excuse me now while I do some further damage to my Visa.

Just found another: CHECKMA05 (from DVD Price Check)

This is getting to be like the DDD sales where the coupons just keep coming. But they are apparently one use only now. Big difference: you can use them for preorders at DVD Soon.
