DVDsoon - trustworthy site?

I posted this in the Noir thread and realize I should have made a seperate thread to not hijack that one. Somebody there pointed me towards the site DVDsoon.

I am very unfamilier with it. Is it a trustworthy site?

I just joined and I was very pleased with what they had to offer. Just for joining I got the incredibles and top gun free. I mainly joined because the prices are really reasonable. Most items are always cheaper the future shop and best buy. Plus the shipping is free. I havent had anything shipped to me yet but from what I've seen so far I think they have a lot of offer and Im glad its Canadian run so I can save a few extra bucks. I'd say go for it.

I've had no real problems with them. I used to order box sets from them all the time. The only beef I had was that some of the dvds in one of the box set were defective, which wasn't their fault, and got them exchanged with no problems. Be careful what you order if you don't want French titles on your covers though.

Corleone, thanks for the links to older threads. They seem like a good site. The prices are amazing.

I just ordered:
Laura
Panic in the Streets
Call Northside 477
Red Dwarf Season 5
Red Dwarf Season 6
The Killing

all for under $90 (CDN)

I figure they are located only an hour from us so if they screw me over I can visit them personally with some hired goons.

DVD Soon probably gets as much or more bashing on DVD Talk than any other store. I've consistently defended them for more than two years.

I saved a lot of money with them over these years but late last year they got better. They introduced a "Fidelity" card (not a physical card, you get all the benefits at checkout) that costs $49.98CAD/year and gives you free standard shipping and half price priority shipping. You get at least 5% off everything all year but so far it's been much better. At Christmas/New Year's time it was 25% off, then 14% off for Valentine's Day which was upped to 20% off and currently it's 10%. I bought a ton of DVDs when it was 25% and 20% and my total cost, even factoring in the $49.98CAD has been barely over 50% of list. It's as good as the vaunted Deep Discount DVD 20% off sales and what's better is that it applies to preorders. I've been spoiled and the 10% doesn't look so hot to me now but I figure they'll have a higher discount again sooner or later.

Damn I just joined last month and I thought 10% off was a huge deal. Thanks for putting my mind at ease. I wasnt so comfortable after reading all the negative stuff.

their customer service can sometimes suck (i.e. they will NOT work with the customer no matter how much he/she spends). They never have anything in stock cuz they're a middleman and have to order everything so don't be surprised if your orders take a few months to get to you (they don't declare an item lost until 30 business days, or about 6 weeks). They charge you right away.

the only thing that they have on their side is cheap prices but definitely not much else.

Total waste of time. Ordered four DVDs, received one, had to fight like hell to get them to cancel the rest of my order. Still awaiting refund. Total waiting time, order to cancellation, was about two months. Incompetent, unaccomodating, and a real pain in the ass. Spend a li'l bit more and get useful customer service and delivery in your lifetime from some other outfit.

Never ever ever use dvdsoon ... They suck beyond belief. I 5 dvds from them and months later, still had not received them ... It took threatening a call to the FBI and Visa to get my money back.

They may offer cheap dvds, but you'll spend months (in at least 2 cases, years*) to get your stuff.

* - I've heard of 2 people who ordered from them and it was 18+ months later that they finally received their dvds.

Ska-ruu that!

I know they used to charge your account immediately, even on backorders, so canceling an order is a pain. Shipping was veeeeeerrrrry slow the times I have ordered from DVDsoon.

Good grief, these stories are nothing like my experience. Occasionally it's taken awhile to get something (lately, it took about six weeks to get the Rocky Anthology but I got it for $22US so I'm hardly upset. I've been waiting for Other People's Money and it's still "on order" but I know I'll get it and it's costing me $6US). But the vast majority of what I've ordered over the last 2½ months has come between the day before release date and a week after release date. That's not a whole lot different from ordering from other e-tailers in my experience. I've ordered 28 items since late December and paid just a tad over half retail overall (including factoring in the $49.98CAD I paid to become a Fidelity member).

I've been ordering from DVD Soon for well over two years and I've never experienced one of these horror stories. I have had two or three problems in that time which were professionally and politely taken care of by a CSR on the telephone.

You may be the only person in the world. The rest of us have had incredibly sucky service ... I know the people I spoke with were absolutely the most unprofessional c/s reps I've ever had the displeasure of speaking with.

In what way? They do have some peculiar rules but they are as up front with them as any site on the net, probably more so than most. They will not violate any of those rules but as long as requests fall within the rules I have found I have had no problem being accommodated.

If you don't like their rules then you should definitely shop elsewhere.

ordered plenty of dvds from them. eventually they always get here. some people have had problems but i have nothing but praise. many times they have the lowest price going plus the exchange rate is favorable. just ordered the beatles anthology (5 dvd set) for $38.18 (us) shipped. i will continue to use them.

I've only had a single DVD take a couple months to get to me (a Farscape dvd which sat On Order for quite a while)--everything else has been pretty quick.

I'll soon make back the money I spent on the Fidelity card, having only purchased it last month. I'm just hoping movielib is right about the prices going back down again.

I've ordered about a dozen DVDs from them and have had no complaints at all. As long as you don't need your DVDs right away, you should be good to go. I think they've even gotten faster in the last few months.

Some of the preorders that were as high as $29.98CAD have come down to $25.98 (e.g. In Good Company, Lemony Snicket's..., The Woodsman, Assault on Precinct 13). Sideways has come down to $24.98. On the other hand, National Treasure, which was $20.98 has gone up to $25.98.

DVD Soon is nothing if not unpredictable.

It seems most of the preorders that were $29.98 or $25.98 have now come down to $24.98, some as low as $21.98. A lot of other stuff has been reduced by a buck or two.

Prices are almost back to normal.
