how do credit cards with "points" work?

e.g my amazon credit card (or any credit card that gives away stuff as you accumulate points)...i just got $50 and spent it to get some free dvds. what does amazon get out of this? i buy stuff from OTHER stores and then amazon gives me free stuff? does visa give amazon money every time i use their card?

Basically, yes.

Visa gets somewhere in the 2-3% range of each purchase made on the card (from the merchant), and if it is an "affiliated" Visa card, they share this revenue with the affiliate.

Some of my cards give an automatic minimum 5% discount on purchases.

These cards give 5% on gas, food (dedicated supermarkets only) and pharmacies, and 1% everywhere else.

Some are automatically rebated on the next month's statement, while others you have to call a 1-800 number to issue credit.
