I think Best Buy is doing the ol' bait and switch move

So I see the HBO deals for Mr. Show and go last night at about 8pm since the website says they have both in stock. i get there and I can't find any. So I ask the dude to check the computer, he says they have like 8 of each, but he can't find them anywhere--not even in back. I ask for a rain check and they tell me they don't do them on multiple purchase, dollar-off sales (this is the same Best Buy that told me I can't return something the same day I bought it and that if I do in-store pickup, the items aren't available for 24-48hrs) I do see something else I want, Max Payne 2 for PC, but i remember it's going on sale tomorrow for $15 less, so i hold off (yea I know I could have purchased it and then price matched it, but I figured I gotta go back anyways to do that so I might as well just go tomorrow morning so I can pick up a few more items on sale).

I wake up today and get to Best Buy at 1130--30 minutes after they open and MAX Payne 2 is all gone of course, but Mr. Show is FULLY STOCKED, WTF! The sale ended and 30 minutes later all the DVDs MAGICALLY appeared that were on sale and the stuff that's now on sale magically disappeared.

Not to mention I'm still owed $85.00 in best buy reward certificates that were processed at the end of JULY. So I paid $10 for a card so it makes sure I go to Best Buy for all my purchases, and they still screw me over (i have received $15 worth so far, but at this point they owe me over $200). I'm moving in 3 days and need to buy a fridge, washer and dryer and I'm going to Fry's now if I don't see them by Tuesday.

So are you suggesting that Best Buy sometimes pulls low stocked items from their shelves in order to sale them at a later date for full price?

It's probably more likely that they continued to search for your DVDs after they left (the guy probably mentioned them to a co-worker, who went in the back and found them) and that Max Payne 2 simply sold out quickly (most Best Buys I know don't keep a huge inventory of each game release...maybe a half dozen or so).

If I were you, I would be careful the way I chose to title my threads/posts!
Saying things like "I think I want to torch my local Best Buy" is a poor choice of words and am I am sure it does not represent the sentiment of this forum in general.......apart from conveying the impression that you are a violent person! And keep in mind that such choice of words can be interpreted as threats.
Calm down.....take a deep breath.......get some fresh air......and control yourself - it is not as if your life depends on Best Buy.
If any moderators are present. maybe you guys can voice your opinions or DVDTalk's views of such thread/post starters!

Yeah, and if your local BB coincidentally ends up getting torched, guess who'll be their prime suspect...

As unlikely as this may sound, I've had it happen to me twice at two Best Buys. One time I was trying to pick up "The Sopranos" on the day that the Second Season was released. (The deal was that if you bought the new second season and the older first season release on the same receipt, you got a discount.) When I got there on Tuesday (new release day), there were plenty of the second season sets, but no first season sets. I asked a clerk and even tried a different Best Buy. No luck. Both stores were sold out of the first season set. (And this was at about four o'clock in the afternoon.) I went back one week later (the day after the sale ended) and there were PLENTY of first season sets.

A couple of months later they had another one of these "buy the new season set and the old season set on the same receipt and save" sales. (This time it was M*A*S*H, I believe.) No older sets in the store on new release day. One week later, plenty of all the sets were available.

(Suspicious? I "guess" they could have gotten a shipment in over the weekend, but why not have stock of the items which are advertised in their sales flyer.)

As far as "torching Best Buy"...you might want to add (Just Kidding!) to your Subject line. In these days when people are frowned upon for stating politically incorrect opinions/statements, often times the "flavor of language" is diminished because we cannot express varying emotions (and to a degree sarcasm) with our words without offending some sensitive people. (Or offending people who are looking to jump all over you because you may have (quite honestly) misspoke or said something in jest which had no malicious thought behind it.) After reading your post, I didn't seriously think that you would torch Best Buy, but there are other people who often lack the ability to see the difference between an actual threat and "poetic license."

30 minutes after the sale starts?

or saturday night before closing they are out of stock on sale items and sunday morning, when the sale ends they all of a sudden have everything back in stock? i highly doubt they got a shipment sunday morning before the store opened.

And i did not mean i was going to really set fire to Best Buy, people. If you believe that you're crazier than I am for saying it.

it won't let me change the title

The Mr. Show sets were probably held up in inventory...which might explain why the computer said there was 8 but none could be found.

I cant count the times people came into the store i worked at looking for something and i couldnt find or take the item to them because inventory had yet to tag or sort any of the boxes.

If the ad did not specifically state that the sale was limited to in-stock items, I think you are entitled to a rain check for the offer. Otherwise stores would run afoul of various consumer fraud laws. Better to drop a dime on them (damn, that bit of slang is dated) to your local FTC and TV station than to light a match. [ bevis] Fire?, Fire!, Fire [ /bevis ]. A letter to BestBuy corporate couldn't hurt either.

I was at my best buy sat. night where I saw more than 35 boxes of max payne 2. I held off and just bought a pre-sell box so I could get the t-shirt. When I came back at opening of the store and was first back to the max payne section they had 2 copies on the shelf. My BB did have both seasons of Mr. Show on Sat. night though, I was there to buy them, but decided against it.

Well, let's review what we already know. Retail employees are the most underpaid and in some occassions the most non-knowledgeable people in their profession. Some of them are even cocky and just plainly don't give a flying F what you want or need.

But this same group of people will not hide stock just because it's on sale or whatever. They know that if they have it and stock it, that will be less people that will come to them to find it. Retailers receive shipments everyday except some Saturdays and almost all Sundays. Chances are the product arrived the day before the end of sale and it takes a little time to receive and price, then stock.

You were a victim of poor timing. I can't explain everything else in your post, tho'.
