I recently came back to dvdtalk after a long 'time-off'. I remember killer deals all the time, but they seem to be all gone. I guess the internet bubble blew up and with it most of the really good deals we used to get all the time...

No, we don't get as many bargains. But there's always Columbia House.

CH is always a bargain with 23e

...and lots of DVDs that were priced at $25-40 back in your youth are now available for $10-15 and in some cases even less - that's a bargain in my book!

Back in my day we could get a hamburger sandwich, some fried potatoes, and chocolate shake and still get change back from the nickel.

These crazy deals ended when the 90's ended for the most part.

However, there are still some decent deals to be found. I still get good deals at Amazon by combining Share the Love with my Vividence GCs and trivia credits.

It sucks we actually have to pay for our DVDs now, but we will always have our memories of Reel.com.

The deals are much harder to come by, but when they do appear you have to take advantage of them since they won't be around for long. Not like in the past when you could pass on a $10 off $20 coupon because you knew a $10 off $10 would appear in a few days, lol.

What I don't get is why so many people think buying a DVD for $14.99 is a bargain when it can be had for less than half of that price from Columbia House with 23E.

Unless it's a box set, or title they rarely carry, I always go through CH.

No more of a hassle than ordering from any store online. Lately I've found Columbia House even faster than most online stores. I order over the website and usually have my DVDs in less than a week.

Well, if you picked up the Two Towers last week for 14.99, you paid about 3-4 bucks below what the store you bought if from did. I'd say that's a hell of a deal

Basically things have moved in a way that if you like to buy releases the first day/week that they are out you make out like a bandit. After that it gets spotty and the deals are much harder to come by.

For example, Two Towers is tough to get now for less than 17.99. I doubt that you'll see 14.99 again unless it's a day-after-thanksgiving special.

All Paramount DVDs used to be $27.99 MSRP, the times, they are a changin'

i guess it's because people don't wanna buy 6 titles for enrollment or something.

i recently did CH again, it really wasnt much of a hassle. Logged on to their site a grand total of 3 times. 1) order enrollment stuff, 2) order fullfillment box set + reject directors selection and then once I got the dvds in the mail I logged in for the 3rd and final time and cancelled my membership. Not to tough, and $7/dvd. considering all of us dvdtalkers are "net savy" Im not sure what the problem is here...

I bought it for $7.16 shipped through CH. (I preordered it.) I received it the week it was released. Half of what the B&M people paid.

If you wiat a couple of months, you can get it as an enrollment for $7.16 again.

I used to thinmk that the first week $15 sales were the best way to buy DVDs but the only thing I will pay more than $10 for is a box set. Between CH (which requires only a little patience) and pre-viewed from BB and Hollywood, I have doubled the number of discs I get a month.

CH is okay, but you have to wait too long for titles to become enrollment titles. Its great for catching up on older titles you have missed though.

I think there are some good deals around compared to what Dvd's used to cost even though coupons, etc. are not very common anymore. I do miss the days of of Reel, BigStar, Buy.com, etc. with coupons galore.

I agree. It's not the hassle, but the patience. I set-up a special folder "Waiting for CH" on my dvdaficionado list and subscribe to the "Available for enrollment" thread. As soon as I have 6 matches, I put in the order. I got used to the wait though since those are movies that I've seen anyway and I don't have to have them right away. I do very little blind buys for American releases. I'm averaging around $1.20/dvd with Netflix right now.

Most of my non-CH buys are going to non-CH DVDs (Disney's, Criterions, etc.), foreign movies, and non-R1 releases. I think I spend the same amount of money before I discovered CH, but I'm getting more movies now at the cost of being patient with the movies I already saw. I can live with that

I think there are PLENTY of great deals on DVDs nowadays. In fact, this summer was one of the best summers in a long time in terms of DVD deals, IMHO. I doubled my collection just because of all the good bargains.
