Quick Wal-Mart Question

I recieve Minority Report, which I already have, as a gift today. The dvd is still in the plastic but there are no security device inside stickers or anything on it. I was wondering if walmart would let me return this. Anyone know?

Since when has Walmart charged a return fee? If that's a joke it's not obvious from that reply.

With a receipt within 45 days it should be no problem. Without a receipt *IF* they take it back they will probably take your driver's license number, check the computer, give you store credit, and only let you do receipt-less exchanges on rare occasions.

There used to be other places that would take back unopened DVDs for store credit without receipts, but every time I found a place like that where it was manager-dependent, the nice managers always disappeared after a few months or those stores shut down. Now I have nowhere to do receipt-less unopened DVD exchanges except at Christmas time when some places are more flexible.

Ebay is just too time consuming for me for DVD sales which average $5-$10 each. For instance, I have an unopened American Beauty I got for $5 + tax at Best Buy which I decided I don't want, but it's too late to return. Since they go for about $8 new on Ebay what's the point wasting 30 minutes to put the ad together and 30 minutes more for email and shipping time for a $2 profit? Instead I'm going to wait until Christmas and hope I can get $15 credit for it somewhere, assuming they haven't discontinued it or dropped MSRP to $10 before then.

You might wanna sell it on half.com. The 15% commission is a little high, but it's worth it for cheap items because it is so easy to sell an item through half. You just pick a condition, write a sentence or two about the item and shipping method, and give it a price. You'll get an e-mail if/when the item is sold, and you just have to confirm it and ship it.

BTW, American Beauty is selling new for about $13 at half.com currently. After the 15% commision, you'd get about $11 for it if it sold for $13.

I have never heard of this $5 charge on returns...I still know some people who work there, I will ask...I think that must have been a joke.

I know what you mean. A 33% profit just isn't worth the effort!

i don't know... the deadpan sarcasm was practically dripping through my computer screen when i read that... pretty funny to me. i think it was a humorous way to address the taboo issue of taking things back to stores where you didn't buy them.

as for where to get rid of the movie, i know my town has several stores that buy used dvd's, or even ones still shrink wrapped. often will give more in store credit than in cash. you could also call around to pawn shops too i guess. lots of places if you feel bad taking it back to wal mart.

russell2k2 and Manzana would you PLEASE just go to walmart and tell them you got two and want to exchange it for something you don't have. sheesh, you would think we could spend more time on more important things like: world peace, the economy, and most important, how we can get more DVDs for almost nothing. ;-)

Was that really deserved?

If I have something that I got for a dollar, and I can sell it for $1.33, that means I should always take the deal? Even if it would end up costing me $3.00 in preparation?

All he was saying was that for $2.00 profit, it wasn't worth paying an eBay fee, spending time preparing an auction listing, spending time hammering out details with a customer (which can be a huge pain on eBay), possibly paying a Paypal fee on any money, driving out to mail the package, and hoping that the package arrives intact (if it doesn't arrive intact, or if the customer merely claims it didn't arrive, that's a whole other bag of worms). And that's assuming the item even sells for $8.00. It's unlikely to sell for more, but there's always a chance it will sell for less on eBay (unless you post that as a minimum price, which usually affects the overall final price). His time and energy is certainly worth something, and hopefully it's worth more than $2.00 for that amount of work.

100% agree with you. Some people's time is worth more to them than others. It's all about opportunity costs. If you're making $60 an hour at your job, then every minute wasted is a $1 out of your pocket pre-tax. Then again, if you have no job and do nothing all day, I'm sure you wouldn't mind putting in all that effort to make $2.
