They consider shipping and handling as two separate charges. Shipping is the cost they have to pay to send to through USPS, UPS, etc. Handling covers the cost of materials and labor to package your items.

Don't remember getting charged that before either. They just expect that once you get that point in the order, you will just except a small charge and submit. Hopefully this will not spread and become a practice used by other E-tailers..

Handling fees:

$0.00 - $24.99 = $0.99
$25.00 - $49.99 = $1.95
$50.00 - $99.99 = $2.95
$100.00 - $199.99 = $3.95
>$200.00 = $4.95

Assuming that these are the handling rates everyone is talking about.

Not too unreasonalbe, I suppose, but it seems sort of duplicitious to offer "free shipping" and then tack on "handling" charges.

Normally when you submit the order another screen will pop up asking for the three digit code.

This is definitely a new charge, I checked my order from a couple weeks ago and it was not included. I guess they are starting to realize they can get some extra money from customers for the "handling" end of the shipping process. Also interesting that they do not show the shipping charge on the shopping cart page like they used to. You actually have to hit checkout and log in before seeing the shipping and of course the new "handling" charge.

As a follow-up, I wrote to the people at buy.com just to say I wasn't a fan of this new fee, here is their response:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting buy.com.

We are writing regarding the handling fees being charged on orders.

In order to cover rising expenses, on 1/22/2003, buy.com began charging a small handling fee depending on the dollar amount of your order. This type of fee is consistent with industry standards. The fees are being charged according to the order total:

Basket Totals Handling Fee
0 - $24.99 $ .99
$25.00 - $49.99 $1.95
$50.00 - $99.99 $2.95
$100.00 - $199.99 $3.95
$200+ $4.95

For more information on handling fees, please visit our site at:

http://www.buy.com/corp/support/ship....asp?what=much

buy.com continues to bring you the best service, lowest prices, and best
products around.

We appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Team buy.com
www.buy.com

I probably won't order from them as much as I used to. I never really used buy.com for DVDs, typically used them for books and computer parts if they had the lowest price.
