The two main places around here that take used DVD in are Electronics Boutique and FYE. Problem is, no one ever trades in anything good! It's always crappy movies (usually full-screen versions, too) or stuff I already own.
Hopefully Blockbuster has some decent stuff out tomorrow for their $9.99 sale.

I'm not calling you a liar, liar, but you got Spider-Man for $10 two days after it went on sale? Whatever liar.
Seriously, the only place around here that ever has decent prices on used DVDs is BBV. Sad.

I've actually gotten The Killer:CC, and Robocop:CC for 12.99 and 9.99 respectively from people trading in for the 3 for 1s. but the rest of the time all there seems to be is old versions of movies that just got special editions or 50 copies of JOhnny Suede.

I got a copy of the 1939 Wuthering Heights OOP for 9.99 (although used
) from a game trading store. They have a lot to trade, but mostly crap...
I have an excellent older gal and older guy who sell dvds at a local jockey lot (flea market for the proper people) for $12 new. Not bad, because you don't have to pay tax...and you tell the old lady what you want and she tries to find it.
You can also take a dvd that you received messed up (from anywhere) and she will trade you for a new one (if they have it) or another dvd title all together:
Some dvds I have gotten (that I remember):
Oceans 11 Widescreen (12)
M*A*S*H 2 disc SE (12)
The Graduate (12)
The Man Who Wasn't There (12)
Sexy Beast (12)
The Bridge on the River Kwai Limited (12)
Royal Tenenbaums: Criterion (12)
Spider-Man (12) (got it saturday a day after real release)
and I also got:
The Godfather (50 bucks new)
and a lot more. I have never asked them to see about any other titles though. They seem to have an excellent selection.
Only bad thing: the old lady gets sick a lot. Her husband will not come by himself. I even told him I would sit with him if he would like me to.
....but he would have to let me pick out some dvds for free.
Nah. they are very nice, but I am not sure where they get the dvds....I probably have stolen merchandise. Hey. Who cares.

And you live where?
Seriously, I just came up with a plan. I'm going to spend the ENTIRE day camped out in front of EB in the mall. Whenever I see anyone walking in with what looks like DVDs I will get to them first:
"Hey, man, watcha got? Salo? Cool, cool. Ya' know They're only gonna give you like three bucks for it. I'll give you five."

I love checking used DVD bins/shelves. You never know when you'll find that gem that might've slipped through past a knowledgeable salesperson. The used places I frequent check out the discs pretty carefully before buying. I've had no problems (so far).

In my area (Kansas City), there are several CD Warehouses that have very good deals on scratch-free DVDs. In the past, I've been lucky to find new releases on release week for around $12 - $14; opened but mint. I think they're based in Oklahoma City. The last time I was there, I picked up Zoolander ($8.99), Godzilla 2000 ($10.99) and Resident Evil ($10.99).
A couple years ago I purchased Enemy of the State at Blockbuster and it was scratched all to hell. I won't even step into a BBV these days --- eeek.

Does anyone know of a good place to unload some DVDs in the St. Louis area? I have been putting this off for a couple of years now and I think I want to trim some of the fat off of my little collection (mostly to upgrade though). I figure I won't get much, but some stuff is just collecting dust. The only place that possibly buys DVDs that I know of is a local store called Slackers, any other suggestions?

(a) it usually takes too long for new releases to be offered from Columbia House,
(b) the selection from Columbia House is decidely skewed towards the lowest-common-denominator (ie. modern Blockbusters and little else) and
(c) those new DVDs are only $9.28 each if you subtract the ridiculously inflated shipping and handling fees and average in your "free" selections.

To add to what grunter was stating, there is also the thrill of the hunt. When you see a pawn shop or a used record store you get a sick little instinct to look, see if you can find something. Oh man does it feel good to find something special in a mess that is the store. I found plenty of good things for dirt cheap at pawn shops and used record stores and let me tell you, it sure does make you feel good when you find those gems in the mix. Fulfills your animal hunting instincts......
Ok, maybe thats just me.

a: well if your in a rush for dvds, i have 170 dvds, about 80 not watched yet, and 190 on my wishlist, so not pressed for a brand new release, can wait 2 months for it.
b: selection is fine, you won't find the odd selection here and there, but to really build a nice collection they are great.
c: doesn't matter in the END each dvd costs $9.28 cents each. that's it. i get 8 dvd's each time each one 9.28 cents including everything.. tough to beat that.

I've gotten to the point where 90% of what I buy is used. There a couple really great stores not too far from me that I go to every week. They have a huge selection and priced at $8 or $10. Plus when you get really lucky, they'll throw excess new inventory on the shelf with a used tag and $10 price. I've picked up a dozen or so that way also. I save my new purchases for big stuff that I'd have to wait forever to find used or things I just can't wait for.

This is not true. The $9.28 per dvd incorporates the shipping.

You get that price:
- if you can find 8 discs in their catalog that are actually worth owning
- if you con some rep into making you a "preferred customer"
- if you happen to get in on the ground floor with the latest deal code
- if you have the cash or credit card "room" to purchase all of your fulfullment DVDs at once
That Columbia House scam is all about the "if's"
