Best buy return question
I did a search and waded through the threads to find a similar topic. The closest I got was in the video game forum and not surprisingly I didn't get a reply when I posted this question there. Also, Best Buy's website does not mention merchandise purchased from other stores. So...
I got an expensive cordless phone as a gift from someone out of state. I don't like it and it doesn't work as well as my current phone, so I would like to return it. The trouble is I don't have a receipt and the person who sent it to me is overly sensitive and will be insulted if I tell her it's no good. I know it was purchased at a Best Buy in a different state, but there is nothing on the box to indicate that. Am I stuck with it? I would gladly exchange it for store credit or a different model phone. Has anyone had experience with this before?

I tried to exchange a defective DVD without a receipt that was a gift and they basically said, "Not without a receipt." The person did buy it at BB but didn't have the receipt. Made sense to me; no one really expects to open up a defective disc. You could try but you might come out pissed like I did. By the way, I exchanged that DVD without a hassle at Target.

Also as a side note, while I was there I overheard a conversation between a CSR and someone who brought in his computer to get the RAM upgraded. They apparently put 133Mhz memory in there instead of the 100Mhz and messed it up. It took them NINE days and they refunded his money and basically said, "Sorry." Just further proof that the people at Worst Buy have no idea what they are doing.
So in closing, I would advise you to get that receipt somehow if you want an easy return. Otherwise, stay far away from that place unless you are buying something that can not be defective or just keep the receipt. Sorry for the mini-rant.

If you can wait, take it back right after Christmas. They're usually pretty good about giving store credit for non-receipt items then.

If all else fails I can go with Plan C: "The Truth", although I think it's highly overrated and seldom works out for the best.
Thanks all.

Here is another return question regarding digital coupons. I orderd Panic Room using a $5 DC and it is too late to cancel the order. I found a great deal at DDD that if you buy Panic Room and one other Superbit title, you'll get another Superbit title for free. If I return Panic Room to the store, will they place the $5 coupon back into my account? The coupon has an expiration date of September 28. Thanks.

As a general rule, no receipt=no return. Often times, reasonable exceptions will be made (which I would define as defective CDs and DVDs, and most unopened merchandise under $50, which was my rule back before school when I was a supervisor), but by no means is Best Buy required to take back anything without a receipt.
Also, 100% of the time, if the customer comes in expected to get a no-receipt exchange, rather than asking politely, the answer will be no as far as I'm concerned.
