Best Buy Tests Rewards Program

Best Buy is looking to make it worth your while to remain a loyal customer, especially if you buy movies and video games from the retailer.

The Edne Prairie, MN based electronics chain is testing a loyalty program called "Rewards Zone" that allows customers to earn points towards discounts and certificates each time they purchase merchandise at the chain.

The test program is patterned on Replay, a similar customer loyalty program the Sam Goody chain implemented before Best Buy acquired the retailer, a spokesperson said.

"We're talking key learnings from their program and deveolping one for Best Buy," a spokesperson said.

The test becan July 15, but no end date has been set, she said.

Under the program, customers buy an Official Zoner Card for $9.99, which they show each time they make a purchase.

They earn 500 points with every purchase and also earn an additional 100 points (for a total of 600) for each dollar spend on movies, video games, music, and software. Some special offers and promotions also allow customers to earn more points.

The first use of the Official Zoner Card earns the customer a cool 5000 points as well as a 10% discount store coupon.

Accumulating 12500 points earns the customer a $5 reward certificate applicable towards most items at Best Buy.

I received a coupon in the mail last week for a free "Rewards Zone" card. Don't really know when I'll use this...except for Black Friday!

Rewards Zone

I work at a sacramento Best Buy and we have not rolled out any promortions with the rewards card in our store. I have checked my in store mail and have heard no news of it coming out any time soon either. At least I have heard nothing about the promotion.

The URL for thier program is http://www.bestbuy.com/rewardzone

They've got some glitches to work out still. One store ran out of the cards, another gave me a card but forgot to get my address and contact information from me and I ended up having to go back to the store to give it to them since they couldn't input it over the phone or via email or the web. Also, it appears purchases made online can't be input for credit, online retail store purchases.

I'm inot sure it would be worth the $9.95/year price but I'm in it for free with a promo mailer.

Sounds like you don't get much at all. Not counting the $9.95 you have to pay to have the card, it looks like something close to a 5% discount. Just for the sake of easy math, let's say all dvd's cost $17. You go to BB, buy it, and you come away with 2200 points (500 for the purchase, 100 for each dollar). You need 12500 just to get the $5 gift cert. So you need to buy about 6 dvd's to reach that. That puts you at over $100 spent to get $5. My local sales tax is 6%, so I would be losing money in the long run...still not counting the money I have to pay to join and stay in every year.

I think the premise is that if you are going to buy one or two new releases every week anyway, you might as well sign up and get something back....even if it is only 5%.

If you buy a dozen or so movies or one or two big hitters (BoB, 007, etc.) you make out.

Ah, maybe, maybe not. This program is basically the Replay Club from Sam Goody/MediaPlay etc. First off, the math is basically correct, you aren't going to be getting a great discount. Secondly, these coupons are "exploding" i.e. they expire relatively quickly and thus you can't combine them (well maybe you could, but you have to spend A LOT in one sitting) to get multiple coupons.

Yeah...it's a scam just like Replay...you spend MUCH more than you save. It's a waste!

WOW $5 off..after spending well over $100 something!!!

I got tricked into the Replay deal since they never told me you had to pay for it,until after they totalled up my bill...since i stupidly bought a dvd & a coupel cds i could not find anywhere else for full price. Well i rarely shop at Sam Goody or the other expensive stores...since you can actually save $$$ shoping elsewhere.

I always toss out the coupons BB sends me in the mail...same goes for any other store trying to trick you into shopping there. Since of course...the trick is,you spend much more than you save. So sorry...not interested!

Also reminds me of other scams like Blockbuster's RENT 5 MOVIES,GET 1 FREE....oh my god,what a great deal!!(NOT!)

As for those Best Buy coupons....they say stuff like "BUY 3 dvds/cds ect with a price of $14 or higher..& get $2 off!!!" yikes what a offer!!

+ If you read the small print...has tons of limitations, saying the stuff can't be lower than $19 & so on..& you only get the couple bucks off if you buy 3 or more things.

So of course...don't fall for it..your just wasting $$$$.

Ok, I must be a special kind of stupid or something but here is my question:

If you are buying stuff from BB anyway, as long as you spend enough to get back at least 2 $5 GC's to cover the cost of signing up then what's the big deal?? It's not like they charge you more because you are in the program. Am I missing something or what??

i dont know maybe these people know a secret place that sells new releases cheaper than best buy, thats the only way i can see this coming out bad, and with best buys recent % off sales, the older titles have been in line with deep discount dvd

i did a search for info on the "best buy zoner" card and dug up this old thread. Geez are there alot of bitter people here.

Anyway, i got the card free and since 9/02 ive raked up 24 $5 vouchers. Thats $120! And they give you 3 months to spend it so i dont know why anyone would think thats a bad deal.

Has anyone else gotten in on this? Im looking for help in how to use my ramaining 18 vouchers because the BB employees are dopes and have been saying that these are only $5 off $10 coupons and are no longer allowing me to stack them.

I stacked three $5 off coupons, and already the employees were giving me heat.... As if it didn't explicitly say Can be combined with other offers (or something to that effect) on the back! You'd think we were taking the money right out of their own wallets or something....

BTW, I received this promo for free. I didn't think I would ever pay the $10 for the annual membership...until I started receiving more than enough of these discount coupons!

re:

BBHTguy,

If is not confidential, of course
could you tell me what kind of discount BB employees get and how long does a person have to work there to be eligible for it?

Thank you.

Well, i got an email confirmation from best buy stating that they are stackable. They also said that if the people give me any more hassle then to call the complaints department.

**Our $5 Best Buy Reward Zone certificates can be used together towards one purchase, or item. For instance, if you make a purchase for $30, you can use up to 6 $5 certificates.**

Anyway, i just got 2 more in the mail today. I wonder if theyre screwing up by sending me so many. i really havent bought that much lately.

so why do people feel so strongly one way or the other?

If it benefits you than go for it.

If not then don't.

I personally rarely spend enough money at a single store to take part in a rewards program. The only one I bought was for Books-a-million and that was only 5 dollars.
