HOW IS HALF.COM? I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE SITE, AND I WANT TO ORDER FROM THEM, BUT I WANTED TO KNOW HOW RELIABLE THEY ARE. SHOULD I BE NERVOUS?

YOU SHOULD NOT WORRY ABOUT HALF.COM. I'VE HAD SEVERAL TRANSACTIONS WITH THEM AND THEY ALL ENDED SUCCESSFULLY. PLUS, IF YOU DON'T GET YOUR STUFF, THEY REIMBURSE YOU FOR IT DIRECTLY AND PROMPTLY.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING, I BOUGHT A KEYBOARD OFF OF HALF.COM BECAUSE MY OLD KEYBOARD HAD THE CAPS LOCK STUCK BUT UNFORTUNATELY I GOT THIS ONE STUCK TOO. I SHOULD QUIT WHACKING IT AT THE COMPUTER, HE HE HE.

I HAVE SOLD HUNDREDS OF THINGS ON HALF.COM AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, AND THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BOUGHT FROM ME HAVE HAD NO COMPLAINTS. IN THE CASE OF A DISPUTE, HALF ALMOST ALWAYS SIDES WITH THE BUYER, SO IT MIGHT TAKE YOU A WHILE TO GET MONEY BACK, BUT YOU ALMOST ALWAYS WILL (IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM THAT IS).

I'D ALSO RECOMMEND DOING A SEARCH OF THE STORE FORUM. YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND A LOT OF INFO.

Yuck, typing like this is annoying. Not as annoying as reading it though.

I'd add that I'd check the seller's feedback as well. Half.com is owned by eBay, and they use the same feedback system... literally! Your eBay feedback will show up on Half.com and vice versa. So, if you see a bunch of negatives...

I'm much more confident of Half.com now. Before they were bought by eBay, they had a truly horrendous feedback/conflict resolution system. It was very easy to inflate your own feedback, and the 5 star scale they used would often not indicate problems with the seller unless you looked a lot closer. Since the changeover, I've had no problems at all - I ordered a ton of books in the past few months, and except for a couple condition grades that I'd knock down a level, there's nothing to complain about.

Except that my mailman probably hates me now.

I have used them in the past and out of 20 purchases i have yet to be burned. I still prefer used sections in local stores like Half Priced Books.

As a seller, I've had problems getting my checks. That's my only complaint so far.

I've had a LOT of problems buying on half. I will no longer buy SE's or Criterions IF there is a cheaper version avalible. The two times I did (Charade CC and Silence of the Lambs CC) I received the non-criterion versions. (two different sellers.)

It was a BIG hassle getting my money back. Their policy is that you send the wrong DVD to them (half.com, not the seller, and at your exspense) with a note. They look it over and decide if they want to refund your money. If they don't think you have a case, they e-mail you and ask if you want to pay shipping to get the DVD back from them. I talked to a guy on the phone when I received a Front Row Charade for $15, and he said that they often side with the seller, and that I shouldn't waste my time and money sending the DVD to them. I did mail it, and did get my $$ back, but it wasn't worth it. They also have a policy that you can only get 3 refunds. EVER! So if you get screwed 4 times, you're SOL on the last one.

Has half changed their policy on returns?

Last year when a seller sent me the wrong CD, I returned it to half.com (not the seller) and got a refund for the price of the CD and shipping both ways. Took about a month to get the refund, but there wasn't a lot of hassle.

Be careful when buying a dvd that has two or more releases. For example: The Bridge on the River Kwai has a 2-disc SE as well as a 1-disc 'movie only'. The Trial (1963) is put out by Image (ok) and Laserlight (less so). For some reason, some sellers who have the cheaper versions will post them on the pages detailing the expensive release. Go figure. In these cases, it might be a good idea to use the 'Ask seller a question' link.
