DVD Only Rental Stores

My brother-in-law and I were talking there other day how most of the video rental places don't carry a lot of DVD's and we started batting around the idea of a DVD only rental store.

I was wondering if anyone else has attempted such a store? If so, is business good, bad, or mediocore? If not, what are some thoughts on the idea?

Yeah we won't get the average person that have not had there eyes opened to the DVD world and still are watching VHS, but being the first one in this town might hit big. We'd also carry the video games as well.

There is a place here in Jersey called DVD of Nj. They only have month long memberships, kind of like Blockbusters rental pass. I joined when they opened because I worked right down the road. I changed jobs and have had to cancell my membership. I'm sure you can look up the # on the internet and ask them some questions. I believe the town they are in is Livingston.

Hope that gives you a little something to go on.

There's a place in Olympia called DVD Depot. And of course Scarecrow Video in Seattle has anything that's ever been put out anywhere in any format.

We have a DVD only rental place in Clemmons, NC. I actually know the owners/operators, as they are friends of my mom. They rent no porn and seem to do pretty good, though they also branched out into ice cream (they are sorta in a bad location behind a bank).

I think that you need to know whether there is a market first of all. It wouldln't do much good to open up and find our that 10 people in your town own a DVD player. You should know what the DVD penetration is in your area and what the habits are of the DVD owners in your area. The best ways to find this out are to ask other video stores and if possible, survey potential customers. I am working on such a survey, if you would like more info, e-mail me.

Remember that you are probably going to be disappointed in what you find. While it would be neat to open a store that would cater to DVDTalkers, most of your clientele will probably not be on the same level as the population of loonies on here.

If you are serious in pursuing this, please e-mail me. I love to discuss this as I hope to one day do it myself!

I was actually thinking about this while watching the movie Clerks. Strange.
