Can we move this thread to the Store Forum? I wouldn't have found it without a search. Thanks, starlights. More info can be found on bluelight.com, by following the Kmart Corporate news link (near the top of the homepage).

Oops, I forgot to mention, it looks like these other threads are obsolete or should be merged:
Unofficial list of KMart stores that might close
Possible list of Kmart closures. 291 Stores!

Yep the k-mart in glen oaks is closing. I live right down the block from there. The rent is high there. Its the reason its one of the closing stores. Not to mention the store pretty much stinks. Never has anything in stock, crappy service and so on...

Last night on the way home i dropped in to pick up a few dvd releases from this week since i wont be able to make it out to bestbuy. The store is already 50% empty. Only dvd's were this weeks releases. I was able to pick up AI(WS), Last Castle and finally found Sandlot in a store.

Its rumored Target is going to take over. I hope so. They have great dvd sections. I can hope for a best buy even though the store is 3 floors

Re: 284 K-Mart Stores Closing !!

Only 3 stores left

Who will close first the last Blockbuster in Bend, OR or the final K-Mart?

Once the Kmart in Avanel, New Jersey, closes for good on Saturday, there will be just three stores in the continental U.S. — Westwood, New Jersey; Bridgehampton, New York; and Miami, Florida — and a few outside of the country. At the company's peak in the 1990s, there were more than 2,300 Kmarts in the United States.

K Mart needed to go away years ago. Every time I went in one it was like I was in a time capsule from 30 years ago. Never updated their look like Target did.

Re: 284 K-Mart Stores Closing !!

I think the last K-Mart around here closed about fifteen or twenty years ago.

Do these last remaining stores still have K-Mart branded products (like Walmart's Great Value), or do they just carry name brand stuff?

It would be kind of weird to walk into one of those K-Marts and see that they still carry "K" stuff, and wonder where it's coming from like those Dharma products from Lost.

I have a couple DVDs that were exclusive to Kmart. Guess I’ll keep those and see if I remember what Kmart was in 30 years. Or dvds for that matter….

What DVDs were exclusive to them?

Their blank cassettes were the best because they had no leader- you could just start recording right away.

Can’t recall exactly, just know I have a bankers box labeled ‘Kmart’ in my wall of exclusives.
‘They were in my weekly thread here the years I was doing the weekly exclusive trek to like 12 different chains every Tuesday.

I can't believe that there are still some around. There hasn't been a Kmart in Canada in at least 20 years or more.

Probably the highest quality KMart commercial on YouTube- I remember the radio commercials with some kids awkwardly singing that jingle:

I remember those Kmart cassettes but I think they were always at risk of getting chewed up and stuck in your player or device.

I wonder how they could still have stores in NY and Miami?

Do they have exceptional customer service or a lot of old people going to those stores?

I miss K-Mart, honestly. I have fond memories of visiting K-Mart's toy section as a child. Even as late as 2010, I'd check out K-Mart around the holidays. It did feel like a store trapped in a bygone era.

So many national retail chains have gone belly-up since the 2000s.

I was in Tahoe last summer and their KMart had only closed the week before. I was disappointed because I would have enjoyed going in and just seeing what it was like.

From a business perspective, how the hell are they operating their distributions with a handful of stores geographically located all over the country?

You probably would have been more disappointed had the store still been open.

Hey, I enjoyed exploring old, abandoned, dilapidated houses we'd find in the woods as kids. I would expect going into one of these stores to be a similar experience.

They don't. Their product selection and stocking looks like crap:

For those who don't know, K-Mart also owns Sears, and there are fewer than 25 of those stores left also. They are in a similar sad state:

When I was a kid, the only big stores within fifty miles of where I lived to shop for life's necessities were a K-Mart, an Alco, and a Gibson's. In that small Midwestern city, the Gibson's closed first in, I seem to recall, the late 80s. And K-Mart and Alco didn't last long after Walmart moved into the city.

I can barely remember when the K-Mart opened, probably around 1980 or so. I think we did most of our shopping at Alco before K-Mart opened, then split most of it between those two afterward.

Gibson's was kind of a weird store. I remember in their magazine section they had Playboy and Penthouse (which was unusual at the time; it was only gas stations and convenience stores that carried those), and they also had all of these old-school wrestling magazines that had wrestlers screaming faces covered with bright red blood on the cover.

They also sold Japanese throwing stars and shurikens in the sporting goods section which were, I think, illegal in my state at the time.

Oh man, I'd practically forgotten about Gibson's and that big arrow sign.

Re: 284 K-Mart Stores Closing !!

Last K-Mart on US mainland closes on October 20:

https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/23/busin...-us/index.html

The store, in Bridgehampton, New York, on Long Island, is due to close October 20, according to an employee who answered the phone at the store Monday morning who did not want to give her name. The manager of the store was not available, and the corporate owner Transformco, the company that bought the remains of Sears and Kmart out of the bankruptcy of Sears Holdings in 2019, did not return an email requesting comment.

The chain still has a small convenience store version of itself in Miami, but not the full line of offerings that Kmart was once known for. That location does have some larger ticket goods, though, such as appliances. It also has stores in Guam and the US Virgin Islands, where it does not face competition from more successful big box stores.

Crazy to see so many major chains fail in our lifetime. If someone told you that Kmart would kill Sears and Kmart by 2025 when I was a kid I would have thought they were crazy.

I know... growing up it was Kmart and Sears. Walmart had not yet made it to the northeast.
