Unofficial list outlines possible Kmart store closures

February 12, 2002

FREE PRESS STAFF REPORT

A list of unknown origin suggests Kmart Corp. will close 291 stores in the country, including 16 in Michigan, as part of its attempt to come out of bankruptcy a stronger -- but smaller -- discount retail chain.

Kmart officials will not confirm that the stores on the list are ones that will close. The Troy company stands by its statement that it continues to evaluate the performance and leases of its 2,114 stores as part of its Chapter 11 reorganization.

The following is a copy of the list, obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

The closing of these stores will result in the loss of jobs for a grand total of 3 quality employees.

Wow.. the one in Houghton, MI will kill the mall up there. K-Mart is one of the big end-mall stores. The only other is JC Penny. The rest of the mall stores are typical small ones, halmark, sam goody, etc.

Though there is a WalMart up there now. Probably a good reason that that K-Mart is losing sales.

Well, I don't shop there anyways so it doesn't matter much if they will have a clearance sale.

The one where I live is closing...I knew it! Oh well, that's what happens when you get Target and Wal-Mart after K-Mart sets up shop.

This could be legit, of course, but I have a hard time believing that our local K-Mart *ISN'T* on the list... It's like a piss-smellin' ghost town in there...

Your so right. Just the other day I went to K-Mart as a last-ditch effort to find an Electric Blanket. They had regular blankets but no electric ones. I went to the "customer service" desk, and had to rudely interrupt them as they were busy talking about some tv show that was on last night. They said they didn't know if they had them or not, and I need to ask the girl who works in Jewelry because she also is the one who does the blankets (duh! - why didn't I know that?).

I went to her and she told me she no longer does blankets, and its done now by the guy in Sporting Goods (duh! - This makes much more sense). I went to ask him and he said they might have some, but he doesn't remember. He also told me he cant leave the sporting goods area, and I would need to talk to someone in Customer Service.

And on that note I gave K-Mart a final farewell...

Yes. There is no Daytons or Hudsons anymore though...it's all Marshall Fields. And the corporation is now Target Corporation located in downtown Minneapolis.

I find it interesting that they aren't closing either of the stores in NW Arkansas. Both stores are basically deserted at all times. I can only guess they want to maintain some sort of presense in Wal-Mart's backyard.

I wonder how they decide which stores to close. IMO, KMart as a whole really isn't doing too well, especially those near WalMarts.

Yup. 3948 is the Super Kmart on 281N and 3690 is out on Guibeau Rd. Walmart and Target are killing them.

I'm surprised none of the Kansas City stores are on there. The one on 95th and Metcalf's shelves were bare the last time I went in there.

This is strange. None of my county's K-Mart's (Solano County,CA) are listed on that list. I wonder why?

I'm surprised that the one in Port Orange FL isn't closing as it is super empty whenever I have stopped in there.

Though its not on the list, the Kmart in Brighton, MA isn't long for this world.

Stuff is being marked down, staff let go, and the stores only filled to about 50% capacity (they've also changed the return policies).

We've got a Target opening about a mile down the street within a year so even without the whole bankruptcy thing it probably wouldn't have made it much longer.
