Dvd Avenue?

I saw their ad at the bottom of the page here at dvdtalk; since I have never heard of them before, I have to assume that they are new.

Has anyone had any experience with them? They seem to be a rental outfit like Netflix, but are also renting PS & PS2 games. I'm unable to commit funds for a test membership & was hoping that some here has dealt with them before.

Well, I'm not going to be much help... but I just signed up for their 2 week trial yesterday. My two DVDs shipped right out within hours (supposedly), so I imagine they'll be here soon.

Seems remarkably similar to Netflix in both practice and design. The selection is definitely suckier compared to Netflix... mostly common stuff and searches for obscure titles came up mostly empty.

Anyway, I highly doubt I'll be sticking with them beyond the 15 day free trial, but I figured 2-4 free rentals sounded pretty good.

[Bump]

Anyone try these guys out yet?

I was just looking at their site, and the pricing doesn't seem as competitive as Netflix. I'm debating joinging one of these places so I can have a chance to to do some catching up on some less notable titles that I've been meaning to see.

Here DVDAvenue's pricing:
2 DVDS/GAMES OUT AT A TIME -- $14.95
4 DVDS/GAMES OUT AT A TIME -- $24.95
6 DVDS/GAMES OUT AT A TIME -- $34.95
8 DVDS/GAMES OUT AT A TIME --$44.95

Just thought I'd bump this back up and share my experiences.

Signed up for the free 2 week trial on Feb. 21th. No problems.

Filled up my rental queue and my first 2 movies shipped (and arrived) promptly. Again, no problems -- other than the fact that the majority of titles I was looking for they don't even stock. When I rent, I'm usually looking for a foreign or indie flick... not Tomb Raider.

I shipped the 2 movies back the next day. The first one arrived 3 days later and another shipped. The 2nd movie (shipped back at the same time) was not checked in, so the next day I sent an e-mail wondering why it wasn't checked in with the other title. I never got any reply. It took eight more days to be checked in. So, I only got 3 free flicks from the deal, instead of 4.

During this 2 week trial, the web site was completely down twice (for about 24 hours each time). The only thing that would come up was an error message (in German, no less).

I quit on March 5th. They make you call in to quit... you can't do it on the site or via e-mail. I figured they were doing this so they could find out WHY you want to quit and maybe even pressure you into staying. Yet, they didn't. The guy on the phone seemed completely uninterested in dealing with me -- he simply cancelled my account. Why make me call and deal with a person if there's no reason to?

However -- and here's the part that's bugging me -- I have yet (15 days later) to receive any sort of e-mail confirmation that my account has been cancelled. There have been no further discs sent, and no charge to my card, so I think I'm safe. But I'd sure love to have that confirmation (that was promised to me on the phone) just to be sure...

Anyway, maybe that huge delay in checking in that one title was just a random fluke... or maybe it was a U.S. mail problem that was beyond their control. But, it still happened. And my e-mails on the issue were completely ignored, without even a form letter response. If this were netflix, at least I'd be able to declare it "lost" after a few days right on the web site.

Overall, I would not recommend at this point... poor title selection, clunky web site, and not-yet-ready-for-primetime customer service. But I look forward to when they grow and start to get competitive.

[Edited to Add]: They finally sent me an e-mail to confirm my cancellation on April 11th -- about 5 weeks after I cancelled. Weird.

I know this is an old thread. I just wanted to mention that you can now cancel via email. I've been using them for a couple of weeks, and so far I have my movies in 2-3 days and they get checked back in 2-3 days after I mail them back.

I just started a membership with them to see if they were any good. I live probably 30 miles from their Clinton, MD address, so I'm at least hoping for fast turnaround times. But as was mentioned earlier, the selection is poor. And as is common with these online rental sites, many titles are out of stock that I have added to my queue. We shall see.......
