Re: Add A Personal Note

I always put a personal handwritten and signed note in with items I sell on either EBay or Half.com . I ask the buyer if they are happy with the item to please give positive feedback for me. About 75% of my buyers do eventually leave feedback.

Sure, it takes a little bit of effort and time to write the note and it is not required, but it shows you care about both the buyer and the transaction. Most people appreciate and respond to that.

I also tell buyers if they are not satisified they should please email me first, so I can resolve any issues, before leaving negative feedback.

That lets them know they have an alternative if something is not right with the deal. Folks are a lot less inclined to leave negative feedback if they know you will take of them.

This is more than common courtesy, it is just good business!

I do the same thing. It's not hand-written but it is a form I made that looks like a receipt or packing slip.
At the top I always put "Thank you for you purchase. If you have any problems contact me at etc etc...Please leave feedback on half.com."
Then I sign my name.

It hasn't resulted in any feedback. I think the problem is that a lot of people create new accounts so they can use the first-time customer coupons.

perhaps someone can shed some light on my current half.com experience. I ordered the Hidden dvd from a seller. It arrived, nearly sealed (the plastic was torn and dirty). When I opened up the dvd, the dvd was loose, so I checked the bottom of the disc. The disc wasn't scratched per se, but it had some weird unatutal looking rings near the center of the disc. It looked like a manufacturer's defect. I played the dvd, and the movie played fine (one time my dvd player said that there wasn't a disc in the drive.. and the next time it played). However, one of the special features on the disc is a special effects reel... and when I select that it just freezes and stops playing. So, what should I do? I guess its not that big of a deal about the special effects reel.. but then again, I'm a little bit annoyed. Could New Line cinema replace the defective disc, should I send it back and try to get my money back, or should I just keep it an enoy the movie?

Mikey, with your situation, I'd stick by my assertion that it's the seller's responsibility as I said in this thread. Unfortunately, sellers have to assume a certain risk when they sell sealed (and therefore un-inspected/untested) products.

If you bought it from an e-tailer such as DDD or Amazon, you'd certainly feel justified in demanding a replacement or refund. I think that a half/eBay seller is also obligated to provide a replacement/refund in this situation, even though it is not the seller's fault that the item was defective, it's just the seller's bad luck that the item was defective.

I have a half.com question. I recently sold someone a used VHS tape from my personal collection. I had watched it a number of times and knew that it was in perfect condition. I sold it for about $3.50. The buyer left me positive feedback a few days ago, but has now contacted me stating the tape is defective, stops playing, and starts spitting tape out of the VCR. The buyer had asked for a full refund plus the cost of shipping the tape back to me.

My question is, what's my responsibility in this matter? I've never had a problem from a buyer before so this is new for me. I'd be ok refunding the purchase price of $3.50, but it doesnt seem right that I'd have to pay for all the shipping charges and take a loss for that amount, which would be about $4 total. Any thoughts?

If he's got good feedback I'd send all his money back (I'd tell him to throw the tape out, not send it back).

VHS tapes that sit around for a long time without being played can be unpredictable so I never sell them.

It's just the cost of doing business. If what he says is true why should he be out of pocket?

Actually no I wouldn't refund the guys money. I am assuming that he watched the movie (hence the positive feedback). I (and You) are not responsible for the guys VCR..If he reported the tape broken as soon as he got it, I would refund the money..not now.
