My first (and last) visit to WalMart

Standing in front of the "New Releases" rack, I asked a passing employee why none of those titles were price marked. He told me all I had to do was take it to the register and the clerk would be glad to scan it for price. I'll bet! What a slimy tactic. They get you to the register with product in hand in hopes that even if it's overpriced, you buy it anyway. I hate stores that don't mark inventory, and refuse to patronize them.

On the plus side, they had two large racks of $14.95 titles. Problem was, they were all crap (IMHO).

I was initially kind of annoyed by this at first, but Wal-Mart does have price scanners now, like Target. So really not that big of a deal unless your store hasn't put any of these in.

Not all Wal-Marts are like that. The two around here certainly aren't. Actually this Wal-Mart has one of the nicest DVD selections in the city. Plus there's a Super Wal-Mart opening up this fall with an even bigger selection.

And there are some pretty good titles in the 14.95 bargain bracket. Everything from Heat to Rush Hour to the Lethal Weapon series to Dog Day Afternoon to Pleasantville. Some of them are little iffy but far from "crap."

Well, to be fair, a few of the titles were worth considering. But to have 10-15 titles displayed with no price in sight is, to me, annoying. I guess I'm just miffed that retailers use a ploy like that. The selection was good overall, but I think I'll stick to online ordering. At least then I'll know how much the DVD costs.

Roy,

You're being too binary. You need to take in the entire Walmart experience. Where else can you see horrible cloning experiments gone bad (when cousins marry and breed)? Men who actually believe Homer Simpson is a role model? Women who dress like Britney Spears, despite the fact that they weigh 2.5 X Britney?

They don't have many in L.A. (yet). I can't wait...

Yeah, that's true, WalMart does attract a slightly, umm, different clientel. Certainly a good place to people watch. Yeah! That's the ticket. While I'm getting the new releases priced, I can scope out some of these honeys who wish (and dress like) they were 20; if nothing else, it will remind me just how beautiful my wife is.

Ahh! But didn't you love the geriatric greeters ? Sorry, I'm getting there (geriatric, that is) soon too, so I probably shouldn't be so sarcastic, but just couldn't resist .

Huh?

They got greeters? How did I miss that? That does it. I am definitely going back now.

Don't most stores now no longer place individual prices on MOST items, placing the price on the shelf instead?

Wal Mart is an abysmal pit.

However, they do have price scanners throughout the store. I have carried DVD's to the scanner to check the prices.

They also give $3.00 off for any item that rings up incorrectly.

Why does this not surprise me?

Even though I love Wally World for its prices and convenience, I really agree that it's annoying to have to ask an inept clerk to ring something up just to see the price. There are never scanners in the Electronics section in stores near me--they're out in the other sections of the store. Oh well. I'll still shop there.

I just take the stuff to the scanner. The store is such a dump anyway you could leave it there and I am not sure anyone would notice. They are remodeling a store near me and when I went in I could not even tell that was what they were doing, it looked like every other day.

Yeah, but that's against the rules, you know. You're not supposed to leave the electronics department without paying for your items. Course, that's never stopped me.

Further adventures.....

Well, I did go back (not for the greeters, as I promised), for a 2-line speakerphone they had on special at $29.95. While waiting in line behind some guy who must have had 50-60 DVDs (no lie) in his cart, another clerk offered to take the next person (me) in line at another register. The woman behind me quickly ran over to him and proceeded to hand him her stuff for scanning. When I politely asked "Wasn't I the next person in line?", they both looked at me like I was crazy, and went on with their transaction. I just had to smile and write it off to the environment. The phone turned out to be just what I wanted, and at a reasonable price, so no harm, no foul. What a place...

What can you expect from a store that caters to the average american?

A shame they have good prices on a lot of things, or I wouldn't touch the dump.
