Again, another reason I will never shop at Amazon. Raising the prices and saying you get free shipping, what's next? Pick any DVD for free but pay 19.99 shipping?

From the article-
Can you smell the BS here?
Amazon spokesman Bill Curry said Thursday that most prices were unchanged, adding that the promotion was a test to determine whether customers could calculate their bills easier without a shipping charge.

They should take a page out of the UK DVD site blackstar's policies. Although Blackstar doesn't offer "free shipping" anymore at least they're honest with the customers in explaining how they price their DVDs and shipping, without actually raising the prices.

"I think it all boils down to amazon.com raising their prices and then offering "free shipping". The .40¢ should teach amazon they you can't screw the consumer with out them figuring out a way to screw you back."
It never ceases to amaze me how many people on this board think they're entitled to always pay next to nothing for every dvd and the second a company like amazon tries to make money people call it names, make fun of it, etc. why the heck should a company consistantly lose money on your business? why should it not try to make a profit? how is amazon screwing the customer? if you don't like the price, don't buy from them. no one is forcing you to buy from them, there's no gun to your head. and what sense does "screwing" a company make? you're going to teach it a lesson?

What are you talking about? I never made fun of them, I never called them names, and I never said I was forced to buy from them. What is even the point of your reply? It seems that you didn't understand what my point was. Do you not understand that Amazon.com secretly raised prices and then advertised "free shipping"? If that is how you like to be treated as a consumer then that is up to you, but I know most will not like it. And about them trying to turn a porfit what does that have to do with them secretly raising prices and just so they can offer a free shipping promotion? Their prices are worst than brick and mortar stores now when you factor in shipping. From your reply it seems that you missed the point of my post.

From the article:
Well, that's what stores get if they hide their shipping charges! When I'm considering buying something, I want to know the *total cost* to compare. That's why I like stores that put the shipping costs right on the shopping cart page, so you can see immediately how much it is. For instance, I recently bought some books from WHSmith.co.uk, and it had a shipping calculator built in -- very convenient (and they got my business!)
So, free shipping or charge shipping, it's all the same to me as long as it's easy to see what the total price will be.

A recent Jupiter Media Metrix study indicates 63 percent of online shoppers stop short of completing their purchases after shipping charges are computed at the last step, known as the checkout line.
So, free shipping or charge shipping, it's all the same to me as long as it's easy to see what the total price will be.

To bad they pissed off a bunch of customers to find that out. It's like sounding an airhorn in a barn and needing to get kicked by a horse before realizing that the animals don't like it.
