This is the stupidest thing I've ever come across. I went to Best Buy's website to order a DVD and although shipping was only $.99, they tacked on a $1.99 order fee! So an item that I could have gotten for 37% off I only get for 28% off because of that stupid little fee. And I can't go to a local Best Buy because I don't have one.

I almost bought a $27.99 dvd from the website, except they wanted to charge the 1.99 for S/H, 2.00 for tax and .99 for a processing fee. An extra $4.98 tacked on. When did they start the processing fee?

Actually, those little charges probably double their profit on the sale.
What would your reaction be if you went into a B&M store, and they tacked on an "order processing fee" at the checkout. I see no difference.
I made a catalog purchase from the Sportsman's Shop. When I got the bill they had added some amount for "order processing". I complained and they said "but it says it in our terms on page 38 of our catalog", but they took the charge off anyway (either that or they were going to get the whole order back).

If they were going to add a fee then put it in the price of the product from the start, not after you have gone through a few minutes of shopping. What kind of deal is that? The point is we don't pay a processing fee in their B&M's because the revenue generated covers the cost. If they are selling enough marked up digital cameras or TV's then that's their web problem, not mine.
I didn't buy the dvd from my earlier post.

Yes, there are costs associated and I guess that it does make some sense to show that cost to the consumer, but how can you compare prices, and why should we be "penalised" for actually giving their employees something to do?
(And does it really cost the same amount to process a CD as it might a TV? - I'm assuming order fee is the same amount and isn't item dependant).

naughty john:
My post was just to illustrate how absurd an order processing fee is. I have never, nor would I ever expect to, run into an order processing fee at a B&M.
Well, I take that back. I've been to the Firestone dealer when they try to tack on "shop supplies" or "disposal fee" for their service. I just say no. What's next, an "electricity fee", or how about a "real estate tax fee". Whatever they want to call it, it really mean "ADP" (an old automobile con meaning "Additional Dealer Profit" - above and beyond the invoice price).

One of the stores I dealt with in the UK had something similar to this (B&M). The shop front was effectively bare, you ordered what you liked from a catalog and they went out back and got it for you. There was a processing charge associated with it when they went out back to get it.
Weirdest s41t I ever saw.

I was about to buy a $100 item from eCost. I had entered my shipping information and shipping selection, and then it came time for the total. Then and only then did they mention the $7.50 "handling fee". (their shipping charge was $9.95, so they were certainly charging me more than their actual shipping)
This kind of crap cannot be tolerated. In effect, they are saying, "Oh yeah, I told you that the item would be a certain price, but now we want more money for it".
Not only did they lose this sale, but they lost me as a customer.
