Originally posted by vaporware I just received two packages from dvd online stores. One was from Amazon and the box was all banged up. The other was from Deepdiscountdvd and the box it was in was in perfect condition. I ordered the Deppdiscountdvd about a week after the Amazon order. I gave up on CTHD and just went and bought it at BB. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth all the hassle, IMHO. |
I've had nothing but good luck with DDD so far (three or four orders or so. No pre-orders), but I have noticed that their prices are often not all that great even with the free shipping. I've seen a few DVDs on there priced above even the Best Buy price. So while I would recommend them, I would also advise to be sure and price compare.

I've used DDD a few times with excellent results. Sometimes their prices are the best and with free shipping it's a no-brainer,especially with a 10% coupon. About l5 dvds altogether with one problem - one dvd did not show after 3 weeks, I called them and they sent another one out. So far, very nice.

My most recent experience with DDD: I placed an order about a week ago for two titles (both of which are now en route to me) and emailed customer service with a question. They answered within ONE HOUR - that get's MY vote!

Limited Selection but Cheap
I have placed 3 orders with them so far and they have not had a single problem or delay. Everything arrived promptly and exactly as advertised. They don't have a lot of really obscure stuff, but maybe that's why they can sell so cheap and still have free shipping.

I ordered two Criterion titles, Hidden Fortress and Seven Samuri, both were back ordered but within 3 weeks i received them.
Great communication via e-mail on the status of the orders. Prices there are really hard to beat right now. |
I just did my second order with them, for the two Saint sets on A&E. I thought they weren't released yet, but they shipped.

I have not read the comments in this thread, but I buy all my DVD's from DeepDiscount and they exceed my expectations. Now, first of all, I am not concerned about how long a DVD takes to get to me. DeepDiscount uses media mail, which can take a week, but for free shipping, it is all good. I wish amazon, buy, dvdempire, whoever would offer this option.
DeepDiscount currently answers their phone in a few rings, is polite and customer centered, and has always accomodated any request I have made of them. Prior to discovering DeepDiscount, I didn't buy too many DVD's online. Being from the old school, and having an averaged "delivered" cost of around $7.00 per DVD, I couldn't bring myself to do it. DeepDiscount has got me back. I recently got a copy of the Criterion: Written on the Wind from them that had NO AUDIO TRACK on the disc. I phoned and told them and they, without missing a beat or having any prompt from me, said they would send out another one and include a postage return label. That is top notch. |
so far i have received all my DVDs that i have ordered .. not really fast ... and not gotten any "shipping confirmation" email ..
but to my surprise i got an email recently telling me that "unbreakable" has shipped ... i have become far more patient about getting my DVDs .. since i know they end up for weeks on the shelf anyway :) |
How is DeepDiscountDVD about cancelling preorders if you change your mind?
For instance, suppose I place preorders for several DVDs due out in a few months and then about a month before release some other e-tailer has the same preorders for several dollars less each. If I decide to cancel those preorders at DeepDiscountDVD and place them at the cheaper e-tailer (rather than go through the hassle of price matching), is DeepDiscountDVD good about cancelling orders as long as it's at least a week in advance of release date? Or are they like Buy.com where you often couldn't cancel a preorder even 1 month in advance? |
Just a follow up. I received The Saint sets 1 and 2 on Saturday, two days after they shipped. These aren't even supposed to be available yet.

yea they sometimes bill before they ship... i wasn't too happy with that but at least i got my dvd for the best price

My Preorder "Castaway" still hasn't arrived after 3 weeks. Billed and shipped on 6/7. Called CSR after 10 working days, they told me it may take 3 weeks. I called back 6/28, CSR told me it never shipped out! and they currently got new shipment to send out. Boy was I pee'd. I asked for refund, they obliged then CSR hung up on me while I was grumbling. LOL(I really was trying to see if he would offer me a 10% disc on my next order) Then, I called back, another CSR answered and told me that it might take more than 3 weeks, so he says don't be surprised if you get it soon. Well, I got my refund and I'm waiting to see if indeed it had been shipped on 6/7. If I get it I'll be happy with a free dvd for my troubles! DDD customer service is top notch though, seems like they have a "customer is always right attitude" although 1 CSR hung up on me. I guess he figured I got what I wanted and didn't want to hear my ramblings.LOL

I ordered Unbreakable the day after it was released. So what happens, it's on backorder and won't even be shipped untill July 7th. That is one of the downsides to this company. The other is once they ship it could be three weeks before you receive your package.
Bottom line, the free shipping and prices really can't be beat if you don't mind waiting for your order. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting... |
Okay, after 3 weeks and 1 day, lo and behold my dvd arrives! I got the DDD CSR to credit my CC the full amount since he thought it never shipped out. Here's my situation: When I opened the smashed box the dvd plastic case and cover is torn and smashed. The 2nd dvd has some deep scratches but it plays OK.
It was USPS that screwed up on delay and damage of goods. DDD is a good company, CSR is very friendly. I could keep quite and keep this damaged but playable dvd or call them and have it returned? I feel pretty bad keeping it since it was USPS undoings. Gee! Feels like a I got horns and pitch fork in hand! |
well, to reply to my own post, I have to say that I indeed sent an email to DDD for return postage to mail it back, I also offered to buy this damaged unit. The plastic case is smashed/cracked, outer cover is torn, booklet crinkled, etc. I'm amazed the discs were not cracked. On the back side of the case is the impression of the inner dvd holder.
I'm lucky I got a refund prior to receiving this. How would you feel waiting for 22 days after shipment and it comes in damaged. It could have taken another 22 days to receive a replacement! |
I have had great experience with them in the past...I think like 5 orders. One thing that is nice is I live in Chicago and they are in Illinois so shipping hasnt been a problem with me....but I do get charged tax so that sucks. They have been great though. I have 20 DVDs in my cart right now but I am waiting for one of those 10% off coupons to show its ugly head.
Also about media...>Media mail can sit at the post office for days. They basically put this stuff on the truck when they have room. The other mail gets loaded first and if there is room then goes the media mail...If not it sits. Around holidays I believe it sits longer because the USPS has more first class and above rate mail going through. A couple of you have had to wait 3 weeks for the disks...Look what time of year it is though...FATHERS DAY. That would explain the long wait IMO. Just a thought. I just know I will keep using DDD they have been great so far. |
An update on my order (which I posted about several times):
After 20+ business days waiting for two DVD's I ordered from DDD, I still had received neither title. However, I got a call out of the blue from them last week. The CSR told me they received one of the DVD's back there that day with no explanation from USPS why it was returned. The other DVD is still missing (neither of us have received it). I told them I no longer wanted one of the titles, so they refunded what they originally charged me. I told them I still wanted the 2nd title and they not only did they offer to send it priority overnight for free, but they also refunded what they charged me for the DVD..meaning I got it free. So, was a free DVD ("Traffic", by the way) worth all the wasted time and frustration? I guess I would call it even. DDD definitely has some issues (I received contradictory emails about shipments, backorder info, etc, and the free shipping really sucks), but at least these guys have some class and fixed things up so I'm happy. I'll be ordering from DDD again - just not with their free shipping. Besides, priority mail for $3.95 beats almost all other online stores anyway. |
i give them 1 out of 5 stars. The only reason they get 1 is b/c they have good prices. There inventory isn't tied to the online store. My first run in I ordered one movie that was in stock according to the webpage and it turned out not to be instock. After a mess of hassel i got the dvd about a month later. When I ordered the movie they said 3 days priorty mail for free but they have this policy of downgrading all shipping 7 day ground if it is back ordered. They billed my credit card about a week before they shipped the dvd. So i figure what the hell they screwed up once big deal it was just a mess up lets try again. So i put in a big order of 13 dvd's and pay for overnight delevery. The webpage says they are all instock but the next day i get an email saying that 12 will be sent out and the last one is out of stock and will be shipped in 10 days using there crappy 7 day ground shipping. Well thats kinda bad service but whatever what can i do with 12 dvd's that i can't do with 13. Then the package comes and there are only 11 dvd's and it says on the slip that another DVD is out of stock and won't be shipped till later. So now i have 2 dvd's that i am waiting on that will be shipped ground even though i payed for overnight. I say stay way and go with the second lowest price on dvdpricesearch they are normally just like 50 cents cheeper than the next store.
