I just tried to get into amazon and got a "We'll be right back" screen. Is this a first? Any ideas about the cause? I've never seen them down, and I'd think now is a peak time - the end of the day on the West coast of the US - and they'd surely be open. I entered my e-mail addy to get notified when they're back up, and I'm hoping for a $5 promo GC too.

Do you know how much money it would cost them if they had to pay everyone that visited the site during that time??? It must be close to $50.

Well, I would have got $10 of that.

I was just looking up a book that I was buying somewhere else (to make sure it was the right version, but 30% cheaper) and they had the audacity to go down on me! The nerve of them! I had to resort to verifying it at Barnes & Noble and still buying it for 20% off B&N's price.

It was still showing the "back later" screen for me. But then I added "?123" to the holding page URL, pressed enter and.... voilá.

Amazon.co.uk is open, also. I just bought something (with a coupon, of course) while the US site seemed to be down
