I placed an order with buy.com back in Sept for two dvds, one which shipped in october and one that shipped in december. I paid using my ecount, and I'm fairly certain that I actually did pay for the DVDs. However, I got this email today (5/8/01):

After researching our buy.com records, we have discovered that your

never been completely billed. We truly appreciate your cooperation in

Anyone had this happen to them? What happens if I don't change anything and just ignore the message? Its not that I don't want to pay buy.com, its that I'm fairly certain that I already have.

Any help/advice appreciated! (the amount in question is less than $20 - they say I didn't pay for one of them, but the other one was paid for)

Yeah, I just got that message too. I pre-ordered the Ultimate Toy Box and remember it hitting my credit card and paid for it. However, right after that, my CC number was stolen and misused. Thus, my CC number was changed, and that is probably the info they are trying to verify (i.e. the old number). I'm not sure what to do.

Iron Chef 05-09-01 08:32 AM

I got one of those emails too. I am checking the charges with my bank at lunch today. If I was charged for everything, which I am 99.999% prety sure that I was, Buy.com is going to get an earfull from me.

ellone 05-09-01 09:59 AM

I haven't received one of those e-mails. However if I did I would have a hard time figuring out if I had paid for an item.
Back in the fall I had a few large orders and every few days something would ship. I had a whole bunch of charges from buy.com on my credit card and was never able to figure out if everything was correct.

indianajdp 05-09-01 10:16 AM

Got the same e-mail last night as well.
Very odd.

MrBEAViS 05-09-01 06:30 PM

I received it too, but I don't think I actually paid.

The Cow 05-09-01 07:42 PM

Same email here too. Checking into it. Keep in mind, Buy.com has one foot in the grave, be very careful!

foxdvd 05-09-01 07:55 PM

Same here..and I know it went through, becasue I check off each one on a list when the charge goes through.

ToriAmos 05-09-01 08:38 PM

I thought I was the only one. At least they are asking before just charging it again. Mine is from September; how the hell am I supposed to check my statement? I only keep them for 6 months.

How much has Buy.com been charging on your cards today? I authorized one before realizing this is probably a scam by buy.com. Sucks. I was sure they charged it before. I called the CC company and now there is almost NO way I can get the $$ back unless I can track down that exact charge on an old charge.

Shawn

TheV 05-09-01 10:18 PM

Oh...I think it would be wise if EVERYONE who previously ordered from Buy.com to find out how many charges they put on your good cards. It appears they don't ask if the card is good. You could have gotten hundreds of dollars worth of charges today.

apowers 05-09-01 10:50 PM

First, keep all of your receipts for at least a year. If you have just send them or you cc company(depending on who you want to deal with) a copy of the original charge, and they should get it worked out. I do remember several times on DVD talk, people bragging about not being charged for things, so none of this really surprises me. I went through and checked all of my orders, and they all came through on my credit cards and they are all marked paid at the Buy.com website. Trust me, if you actually paid for the item this is just a mistake on their part, and it will be worked out in the end. If they are indeed going out of business, that is bad enough, I assure you they do not want to go to jail as well. It may take a couple of months, but this will all work itself out.

Please guys, hold on to all of your receipts, or at least your statements for a full year before shredding them.

The biggest problem is trying to find out when it was originally charged and matching it with an old bill months ago. The onus is on the consumer to prove that it wasn't charged before. So that means 1. You need to find out when it should have been charged and find the cc bill that has that charge. With buy.com's shipping individually it becomes VERY hard. Especially if you have 3 other orders that month for that same price. And if you (like many of us) buy larger quantities it's hard to say "Ok...I know that these where the 15 DVDs that shipped this month." It's really an impossible task.

This is why (besides no coupons) I'm going to buy mostly only from B&M now. Unless it's a one, big order instead of individually shipped items it's hard to keep records.

Okay, after searching through my credit records and comparing to thier Detailed Billing Summaries, I have concluded that I wasn't billed, as far as I know, for the things they are billing me for. This really pissed me off however, because I am getting these bills for crap I've had for months. Also, when I try and verify my credit card, I get this error message.

MrBEAViS 05-09-01 11:55 PM

I get this error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]shopper_id or cc number already exist in shopper promotion table

Oh that is bad. That usually translates to they've maxed your card out.

I know that you were joking. You don't have to  at me.

skyfish 05-10-01 12:46 AM

I've got the same email, too. I'd wait for buy.com actually provide me a detailed bill explicitly stating how much I would be charged and for which orders, so I can try to verify it. I have no problem to pay what I owe, but at the same time I wouldn't enjoy being over-charged either.

Wow...this was what I was worried about before

I think I posted about buy.com trying to charge for old orders a few weeks back, but nobody was paying attention then ^^ Luckily, they seem to be trying to charge to an old card so far, but I am going to complain because they are trying to charge things that are from literally over 6 months ago.

djones6746 05-10-01 12:07 PM

I had an order from January which they never charged me for.......checked online and sure enough they needed credit verification for the individual order. Have not received an email yet....but went ahead and updated the info...they had a card on the account which expired last November. I had placed this order in November.... :)

Whether is was six months ago or not...if you owe them money...you will need to pay up. Just verify online which order is requiring the credit verification. :)

khieng 05-10-01 02:15 PM

I received one of these emails and my first reaction was "what the ....?!" I thought they were trying to scam me or something. But after looking closely at the shipping history I noticed that the order that needed my CC verification was on a preorder. The CC on file had expired by the time the DVD was released. So in this case it was not their fault.

DVDKrayzie 05-10-01 03:52 PM

these arent from the $50 off $50(0) coupon are they?? i dont think i paid for mine

khieng 05-10-01 08:18 PM

Mine wasn't. I used a $30 off $150 at that time. Most of my order was fulfilled and charged. Except for that last preorder that shipped 6 months later. By that time my cc already expired.

B5R2D22 05-10-01 08:29 PM

Does anyone no of s buy.com number that is actually answered by a person. If so please post.

Thanks

gcribbs 05-10-01 08:58 PM

so far i haven't received an email. i am sure i was charged for every order. so i guess i wait and see.

Mike 05-13-01 07:28 AM

I could be wrong on this, but I believe a company only has 90 days with which to charge you for any purchases (purchases already delivered, that is).
Maybe you should investigate it further, I believe Buy.com wouldn't have much of a case since they waited so long to bill you.

MrBEAViS 05-13-01 10:39 AM

Damn. I keep getting that error message posted above whenever I try to verify. Oh well, not my problem.

dirtrat 05-13-01 11:21 AM

Even if its charged against a Credit Card that you no longer have they can still charge it. The issuing bank will accept it as a valid charge and come after you to make the payment. I know because its happened to me before!

Merlinthemage 05-13-01 06:47 PM

I've been looking for some information on online purchasing laws and was wondering if anyone had some good pages on it? seems to be a hard topic to get detailed laws on.

pmwhelan 05-17-01 04:28 AM

i think the problem with some orders may be
when they ship seperately and bill seperately

my card generates one time use credit cards that
become invalid when buy.com tries to charge
to the card a second (or more) time

Solid Liquid Fox 05-20-01 07:13 PM

Well, I guess it comes down to doing the right thing here people. If you know you got your item from them and you never paid for it, then just pay for it. Yeah, don't look at me like that. You remember that whole process of paying for something when you purchase it, right?

Those of us that order a lot online have a little problem keeping track with orders and such, but chances are that most people here know when they have gotten away with something good. They usually don't say anything about it. Very few go ahead and start bragging here in the forum. Of course, when they get screwed they start bitching with the usual "buy.com sucks" thread. It all works both ways.

We all have taken advantage of buy.com's coupons in the aftermath of reel.com. The least we can do is call the 1-800 number and set things straight if you know you owe them money. That and to make sure they don't start charging you for items you did pay for already.

Not to sound preachy, but that's just my opinion.

skyfish 05-24-01 12:50 AM

I was too lazy to call so I just went ahead gave them a new credit card information and hopefully the bill will be correct.

Trencher 05-24-01 09:24 PM

It was done to me also. I was charged for an item on a preorder I returned in February. They tell me they will refund the cost of DVD and not shipping. Hmmm.

ricwhite 05-28-01 11:00 AM

Charging for back orders has happened to me with whatshotnow.com. I recently found a $68 charge on my card for an order that I placed back in December 2000. I tried to match the charge with an order I had made, but it was so difficult I gave up and called my credit card customer service.

He told me that there's a 60 day statute of limitations on charges. If the item was shipped to me in December, the merchant has 60 days to charge. If it is not charged by that time, you can dispute the charge and most likely get them reversed. Which is what I did. A company that is so screwed up that they forget to charge you more than 60 days after the purchase doesn't deserve your business or your money. Maybe denial of payment will be a motivation to them to get their act together.

osokin 05-29-01 03:59 PM

I've been double-charged buy Buy.com twice. This last time they said it was because of a 'free shipping' promotional coupon I used, which had a glitch in it. They wouldn't answer my emails, and when someone finally did answer, they gave their 800 number to call to get it straightened out. When I called, they said they couldn't do it, I had to handle via email... After a few weeks of this, I finally talked to the right person in their credit department, who informed me that not only had I been double-charged (to the tune of $300 or so), but that there was an additional unneccesary charge of $177 that I wasn't even aware of. So it took almost a month to get this whole mess fixed with a credit to my Visa card. I have vowed never to use buy.com again. Their DVD prices may still be the best, but their people are incompetent and it isn't worth the B.S.
