First a little background. As an anti-spam measure, I have my own domain and whenever I have to give an email address out to a website, they get a custom one just for them. For example, Amazon thinks my address is [email protected], Express thinks it is [email protected] and Atom Films thinks it is [email protected] (btw, jahsworld.com is not the real domain, if I were to post it here, some spammer might scoop them up from here too). I never use one company's address for anything but corresponding to that company. That way, if I get spam, the address the spam was sent to will tell me who is the ultimate source of the spam, and I can also deactivate that specific address to block any further spam.

Ok, so with that in mind, here's my story...

About 3 weeks ago, I got a porno spam sent to my [email protected] address. The only time I've ever interacted with Atom Films was to purchase their DVD collection back in early January. So, I email AtomFilms (since bought up by MacroMedia) about the spam asking for an explanation. Of course all I seem to get are morons, both in their customer service department and in their dedicated privacy group. No matter how hard I try to convince them that they've got an issue that merits some consideration, all they say is that "It is not our policy to share email addresses with anyone." But they really seem uninterested in even considering the possibility that they might have some problems, that perhaps their systems have been compromised, or that they've got a disgruntled employee taking advantage of them.

So, with that kind of head-in-the-sand attitude at Atom Films, anyone thinking of buying something from them should think twice. If they are so sloppy with email addresses, despite having a policy to the contrary, you have to wonder if your credit card details are similarly at risk.
