NHL 2019 Draft Lottery: Details, No. 1 pick odds, top prospects

Now that the 2018-19 season is over, we not only know the 16 teams that will vie for the Stanley Cup but also the teams who have their eyes on the top pick in June’s NHL Draft. One team that will have its eyes closed are the Ottawa Senators, who finished 31st in the league but do not have a first-round pick this year after dealing it away to the Colorado Avalanche in the Matt Duchene trade last season.
For the last four years, the draft lottery has taken place during the first-round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The NHL announced last month that it is going back to the old way and holding it the night before the opening round begins — April 9th (NBCSN; 8 p.m. ET).

Per the NHL, here’s how it will work:The 2019 NHL Draft Lottery will consist of three drawings: the 1st Lottery Draw will determine the club selecting first overall, the 2nd Lottery Draw will determine the club selecting second overall and the 3rd Lottery Draw will determine the club selecting third overall. The odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the 2nd Lottery Draw, based on which club wins the 1st Lottery Draw, and again for the 3rd Lottery Draw, based on which club wins the 2nd Lottery Draw. The 12 clubs not selected in the 2019 NHL Draft Lottery will be assigned 2019 NHL Draft selections 4 through 15, in inverse order of regular-season points. Via the NHL, the allocation of odds for the first Lottery Draw of the 2019 NHL Draft Lottery is as follows:
(Fewest Points to Most) Odds
Colorado Avalanche (from OTT) 18.5%
Los Angeles Kings 13.5%
New Jersey Devils 11.5%
Detroit Red Wings 9.5%
Buffalo Sabres 8.5%
New York Rangers 7.5%
Edmonton Oilers 6.5%
Anaheim Ducks 6.0%
Vancouver Canucks 5.0%
Philadelphia Flyers 3.5%
Minnesota Wild 3.0%
Chicago Blackhawks 2.5%
Florida Panthers 2.0%
Arizona Coyotes 1.5%
Montreal Canadiens 1.0%
Finally, here are the midterm NHL Central Scouting rankings of the top prospects in this year’s entry draft, which will be held June 21-22 in Vancouver. Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko are expected to be the top two selections.

Man Ottawa, that 2018 Duchene trade HURTS! They says Jack Hughes is a generational candidate, and now he might go to a 2019 Playoff-bound team.

Re: 2019 NHL Off-Season Thread

The talk is that Kaapo Kakko may actually go first in the draft. He's been impressing a lot of hockey people.
Sucks for Ottawa that they'll lose the chance to get either Kakko or Hughes.

Reminds me of the Leafs trading away their 1st round pick to New Jersey for Tom Kurvers. Who? Exactly.
And then the Leafs finished in last place - so it wound up being the first overall pick in the draft. And who did the Devils take with that pick? Some nobody named Scott Niedermayer.

They didn't learn their lesson and for 2 decades just threw their draft picks away.
"Draft Schmaft" -- Cliff Fletcher

Nothing beats their horrible draft decisions when in 1989 the Leafs had 3 picks in the 1st round (#3, #12 and #21) and they drafted Scott Thornton, Rob Pearson and Steve Bancroft. Anyone remember them? They all played for Belleville, which was only a 2 hour drive from Toronto. There was some buzz on Scott Thornton, so the Leafs only scouted Belleville and grabbed all 3 players from there.

Almost right. The Leafs did trade their 1991 #1 to the Devils for perennial underachieving defenseman Tom Kurvers.

But the Leafs did not finish last; the Nordiques did, and they used the pick to select Eric Lindros. We all know how that turned out. Expansion San Jose got the second pick, which they used on Pat Falloon. Niedermayer was taken third overall. Still, Kurvers for Niedermayer was a pretty good swap.

You're correct... it was total highway robbery, that I forgot he was their 3rd pick. He's a 4x Stanley Cup winner and HOFer, so I probably subconsciously put him as the #1 pick.
As a then-Leaf fan (huge), it's probably something I'm trying to block from my mind.

Re: 2019 NHL Off-Season Thread

Couple of more interesting notes on the Kurvers-for-Niedermayer trade.

There were times late in the 90-91 season when the Leafs WERE in last place in the league, which would have netted the Devils getting the first pick overall. There were actually fans wearing Devils' "Lindros" jerseys with #88 on them.

The playoff-bound Rangers, the Devils' key rival, suddenly lost big in a game against the Leafs late that year. Wonder why that happened? I truly think they threw the game to prevent Lindros from going to the Devils.

Devils get the number 1 pick. Blackhawks the biggest mover, going from 12th to 3rd.

Re: 2019 NHL Off-Season Thread

If it's about NY-area teams going 1-2 in the lottery, I'd point out that Gary Bettman has OPENLY been against three teams in the NYC region, and was going to force the Devils to move to Nashville (obviously before there were Predators) except they won the Cup in '95. So for the Devils to have won the lottery due to "rigging" is highly laughable, if any rigging occurred it would be to drop them down in the draft.

Booing of Gary Bettman when he presents the Cup? That's something that started by Devils' fans for obvious reasons.

Kelly McCrimmon named general manager of Golden Knights

George McPhee will retain role of president of hockey operations.

By Jillian Wagner
@JillianSydney May 2, 2019, 12:48pm EDT
The Vegas Golden Knights announced Thursday that Kelly McCrimmon has been promoted to general manager, effective Sept. 1.

George McPhee will retain his role as president of hockey operations.

McCrimmon, who has served as McPhee’s assistant GM, will report to McPhee, who will continue to be in charge of all hockey operations decisions. McCrimmon will represent Vegas at the General Managers Meetings and will “be the point of contact for other NHL GMs,” according to the Knights’ press release.

McCrimmon was considered a top candidate for the vacant general manager position with the Edmonton Oilers despite not being allowed to interview while the Knights were still in the playoffs.

“George and Kelly are a fantastic team,” said Vegas Golden Knights Chairman and CEO Bill Foley. “The work they have done over the last three years has been remarkable. Together they have constructed a championship-caliber team in a very short time. This personnel move ensures that our hockey operations group stays intact and positions our organization for long term success.”

McPhee was named GM of the Vegas franchise back in July, 2016; he has had great success as the general manager of the NHL’s newest franchise, smashing countless records in the team’s inaugural campaign that led to a Stanley Cup Final appearance and making the playoffs in each of the team’s first two seasons.

Since the move will not be in effect until Sept. 1, McPhee presumably will be in charge during the NHL Entry Draft and free agency period this summer.

____________________

That's bad news for Seattle as we all assumed McCrimmon would leave Vegas to be GM of the Seattle expansion franchise, given his experience and success in building the Golden Knights from scratch in 2017.

Spoiler:

Does that mean parents have to keep their kids away from Golden Knights players too?

I think we have already been screwed by officials in black and white uniforms.

Sharks re-signing Karlsson for 8 years @ $11.5 AAV. That is so much money but you pretty much have to do it. Hopefully his groin is fully healed by next season's start.

Congrats, he's an amazing player and having paid so much to get him, you'd certainly want to re-sign him.

Do you guys owe Ottawa anything else (draft-wise) now that you have?

Interesting. I thought there was talk of him going back to Ottawa. Personally, I'd prefer he stay in a different conference from my Leafs, if he's not one of them.

Re: 2019 NHL Off-Season Thread

It's Draft Day!

Look for the Golden Knights to try and move some salary today. They've gone from zero players to capped out in 24 months.

The Sharks run has inspired the NHL to change the rules. Now all Major penalties will be reviewed, if the severity can be changed, and decreased if indicated. Also things that should stop offensive series like..I don't know, maybe a hand pass, are now able to be challenged.
