You're way overthinking this.

Yep, it was almost a guarantee that the SB would be a blow out back then. It was pretty consistent from 84-95.

January 22, 1984 Los Angeles Raiders† (4, 3–1) 38–9 Washington Redskins* (3, 1–2)
January 20, 1985 San Francisco 49ers* (2, 2–0) 38–16 Miami Dolphins† (5, 2–3)
January 26, 1986 Chicago Bears* (1, 1–0) 46–10 New England Patriots† (1, 0–1)
January 25, 1987 New York Giants* (1, 1–0) 39–20 Denver Broncos† (2, 0–2)
January 31, 1988 Washington Redskins* (4, 2–2) 42–10 Denver Broncos† (3, 0–3)
January 22, 1989 San Francisco 49ers* (3, 3–0) 20–16 Cincinnati Bengals† (2, 0–2)
January 28, 1990 San Francisco 49ers* (4, 4–0) 55–10 Denver Broncos† (4, 0–4)
January 27, 1991 New York Giants* (2, 2–0) 20–19 Buffalo Bills† (1, 0–1)
January 26, 1992 Washington Redskins* (5, 3–2) 37–24 Buffalo Bills† (2, 0–2)
January 31, 1993 Dallas Cowboys* (6, 3–3) 52–17 Buffalo Bills† (3, 0–3)
January 30, 1994 Dallas Cowboys* (7, 4–3) 30–13 Buffalo Bills† (4, 0–4)
January 29, 1995 San Francisco 49ers* (5, 5–0) 49–26 San Diego Chargers† (1, 0–1)

And since the Patriots won their first SB in 2004, many of the games were decided by 7 points or less.

CBS is pulling play call audio and hot routes from same radio channel that the coordinators and play callers use to radio QB's into their helmets, and that CBS feeds that to ROMO's earpiece.

All the Patriots' Super Bowl appearances under Brady have been close and exciting games. I imagine the NFL is keen on them for that very reason.
I remember all of the Super Bowls except the first four. Several were routs, particularly during the era when the NFC dominated the AFC. But the Bills-Giants and both Bengals-Niners Super Bowls were all nailbiters, as was the Rams-Titans game. I don't know what the average Otter age is here, nor your age in particular, but this is a case where younger folks who don't remember the time before the Pats dynasty are at a disadvantage.

Perhaps, but I'm trying to establish the fact that when a team changes cities and/or changes names, their history is still their history.

Because though I'm in a shrinking minority, I still hold fast to the fact that the Baltimore Ravens are Paul Brown's team and that the current Cleveland Browns had no history prior to the 1999 expansion draft. I bring it up, Facts are facts, and the NFL cannot reach it's hand back into the past to take a teams' history, put it in a box, and hand it over to a completely different another team... that's Orwellian.

The Falcons had a 26-3 lead over the Pats in Super Bowl 51 and that should have been a rout but the Falcons blew it though that game did suck for most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

I wish it have remained a bad Super Bowl so the Pats would not have 6 rings.

It's bull. They use an exclusive frequency and all communications are encrypted. If CBS could hear/"steal" the calls, so could the other team...

I remember the Super Bowls before the Patriots dynasty, and its very similar to same problem in that the NFC teams won every year. It was that way from the late 80s when I started watching football until the beginning of the 2000s.

Everyone see Brady's "We're still here" chant this weekend and want to bop him in the nose?

Didn't need the "We're still here" chant for that to be the case...

Two weeks off before the SB is still stupid. We just had 2 good OT games and with that long a break, I just lose interest...

I like the little break. Give the teams a chance to heal up and rest, give them a chance to enjoy the SB experience... and then still get in a full weeks practice.

It also gives you time to heal if your team lost and you don't want to watch the Super Bowl

You can't blame Witten since he has no experience holding trophies

Time to heal? Some of you take sports way too seriously.

I still think there is a chance within the next 5-10 years we may see the Super Bowl moved to a 7 pm (Eastern) Saturday night start. We could see even HIGHER ratings (nobody has to worry about going back to work Monday!) and sports bars and restaurants would do effectively land-office business.

I don't have an issue with the 2 week break.

A Saturday night Super Bowl makes the most sense to me. There's just an opportunity for more people to take in the festivities of it all - be it SB parties, sports bars, even travel to the Super Bowl location, etc. Plus it's one less day of waiting in the dumb 2 week break.

I have to believe it's going to happen eventually.

The two week break never made sense to me. But I think the NFL believes it builds hype up in the media and allows the players more recovery time. There isn't a single NFL player at 100% health this time of year.

See, I didn't mind this...it's not arrogant like Brady's chant. Plus it came AFTER they won.

I agree with you 100 percent that it makes more sense. It makes sense for the Oscars, the Grammys, and a half dozen other events too. I disagree with you 100 percent that it will ever happen.

I agree that a Saturday Super Bowl will make it personally more fun. I disagree that it'll lead to higher ratings or better restaurant/sports bar business.

No one skips the Super Bowl because it's on a Sunday. If you're going to watch it, you'll watch it regardless. There aren't many people that need to be in bed at 7pm on Sunday and therefore need to skip the SB for work reasons.

Bars probably don't want a Saturday Super Bowl either. Bars will do business no matter what on Saturdays - that's when people go out and get drunk. Throw in a Super Bowl crowd and you may be dealing with overcrowding or having to stop people from coming in. Meanwhile, on SB Sunday, they'll get additional business that they wouldn't get on a normal Sunday.

Re: 2018 NFL Playoffs - Super Bowl LIII - February 3rd, 2019

The league and networks want the SB on Sunday so that you are less inclined to go out and watch it. They want people watching in their own homes (and watch the show that comes on after it which they usually heavily promote). They can't measure viewers in the ratings (with its antiquated methodology) who watch the game communally (either at a bar or at a house party). That's why it will not move to Saturday, even though more people probably would watch it (but can't be measured).

Re: 2018 NFL Playoffs - Super Bowl LIII - February 3rd, 2019

I would just like to see the game kick off earlier. Move it back two hours to 4:30e. Basically the same time as the late games on regular season Sundays.

I know that SNF does well in the ratings during the regular season at the later kickoff, but people watch the 4th quarter of those games in their pajamas and go to bed if it isn't a compelling game. Those games are not a major event with parties and all other sorts of hoopla scheduled around them.

I suppose much of the late start is about boosting the network's prime time ratings, where an afternoon bump isn't nearly as beneficial.
