Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

What's not likable about him off court? On court I can see his intensity and gesticulations being irksome but off court he is gregarious, funny, and humble in defeat.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I think Djokovic simply came along at the wrong time in tennis history to be truly loved. By the time he had established himself as a true Grand Slam contender, most tennis fans had already decided between Nadal and Federer. His early career also got off on the wrong foot with fans - disappointing withdrawals, on-court antics, and letting a little too much of his true persona leak through the media. His early playing style, being almost completely defensive, wasn't the most appealing to many fans.

I think the Lendl comparisons are apt - a coldly efficient tennis legend that beat better loved players and earned himself something of villain status by beating them. I'll admit I loathed Lendl for beating my favorites in the 1980s.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Yeah, I don't have an issue with Djokovic now, but early on, him and his family were acting like complete asses. And as good as he is, he's the equivalent of 13-10 football game. Hard to get excited about that unless you're a purist. For most fans, he's the somewhat bland third wheel in the Rafa/Fed era.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Andreescu in the final in Toronto. Pretty good considering she hadn't played since an injury forced her to retire from the FO in May. The last time a Canadian won this (and it was called the Canadian Open then) was in 1969.

Aside from that, I went to the qualies a couple of times in Montreal. And oddly enough, the Montreal tournament is now the only one I can't see on tv, because it's the only one on Rogers Sportnet, and I cancelled that with my new provider because it was costing me $6/month for stuff I never watch (Toronto baseball, basketball, hockey).

Great to see Bianca back on the court and even better that she's kept up her winning ways.

Good luck to her in the final.

A bit of a let down since Serena retired after 4 games, but good job Bianca!

An in-form Medvedev takes down Djokovic. Third final in a row for the Russian.

Didn't get to watch the match but I've heard Medvedev served out of his mind in the second and third sets.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Not just the serve, he was much more aggressive in the last 2 sets. Good to see a young player with a plan B. You're not gonna beat Rafa or Djokovic by being a human backboard.

The father and coach of 17yo Amanda Anisomova passed away Monday. No idea what this will do to her career long term,in the short term she has pulled out of next weeks Us Open. Sad news either way

That is brutal - he was always right there by her side and had pretty much built her entire game. That is going to slow her promising future.

Kevin Anderson has pulled out of the Open. Considering the year he has had, he was unlikely to make a big dent anyway.

It's a USO start!

Upset alert: Kerber booted by Kiki (Mladenovic)

Edited: Considering Kerber has been poop in slams lately, we'll call it a minor upset.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Bouchard has now lost something like 13 straight matches. I'm guessing her career is all but over.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Bouchard's one good year was the outlier. She's just not that talented, combined with the "uncoachable" I've heard countless times, well... Fix the later and she probably belongs in the top 50.

I had a brief WTF??? after seeing "1st round, Federer vs Nagal"

Rublev looks like he's 14 years old, tops. And he's a ginger. Poor guy

I don't buy it but John McEnroe has pegged Rublev as a future #1.

Surprised Shapo wiped the court with Felix.

Never surprised when Genie loses

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

I think Felix hit the "rookie wall" so to speak. He went from 104 to 19 in a flash, and young players are not used to the grind of the ATP tour. At this time of the year, I bet it's just fatigue, physically and mentally. I'm not worried about him.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

And Kyrgios looks like he's begging to be suspended, and it would be about time because he'll never learn:

Nick Kyrgios has accused the ATP of being corrupt in the aftermath of his US Open first-round win over American Steve Johnson at Flushing Meadows.

The tennis firebrand was asked what he thought about being fined a record $US113,000 ($A167,000) for his spectacular meltdown in Cincinnati this month.

“The ATP is pretty corrupt anyway. I’m not fussed about it at all,” he said in a development that will almost certainly force the governing body of men’s tennis to suspend the Australian, having already said it was considering such a move.

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

And Federer drops the 1st set against a nobody for the 2nd consecutive match

I still get a pit in my stomach when I think about those blown match points at Wimbledon a few weeks ago. Most devastating loss of Fed's career in my opinion

Re: 2019 Tennis Thread

Maybe he should play a set before his matches. But yeah, can't afford to do that against top players.
