Sockeyes always sounds like a minor league team name to me. I saw a list on Reddit and someone suggested Seattle Battle Cattle and now there's nothing that I want more.

Re: Official 2018-2019 NHL Regular Season Thread

Seattle Cougars - too bland
Seattle Eagles - NFL team that's also green
Seattle Emeralds - jewelry makes it sound girly
Seattle Evergreens - weak
Seattle Firebirds - passable
Seattle Kraken - sounds like crack
Seattle Rainiers - not a great thing to associate with and adding "ers" at the end is too forced
Seattle Renegades - ok, but I'll keep thinking of the CFL team
Seattle Sea Lions - passable, but still too close to Seahawks
Seattle Seals - doesn't roll off the tongue
Seattle Sockeyes - good, but only for a minor league team.. not pro enough
Seattle Totems - I like it
Seattle Whales - already associated with the Canucks, plus I think someone has the rights to "Whalers" still

I say Totems is by far the best name.

The Totes... Go Totes Go... has a good abbreviated nickname to it.

Forget Seals, Sea Lions and Whales. Anyone remember the California Golden Seals or the Hartford Whalers?

Totems would be the best name on the list.

I'm surprised Rainiers is even on that list given it's already being used in the general area:

Same with Cougars. I don't think that would go over well in Seattle.

In pro soccer they have run out of team nicknames so they call most teams United.

Rainiers would be my third choice after Totems and Pilots.

How about Seattle Totem Pilots, and go with a red, white, and blue color scheme?

The Red Wings deserved that win against the Leafs after blowing a 3 goal lead. The overtime was exciting and Tavares giveaway lead to the winner for the Wings.

I wish the Leafs had a backup goalie better than Sparks.

I see that the Golden Knights' next three games are @ Islanders 12/12, @ Devils 12/14, @ Rangers 12/16. That has to be the nicest, most convenient road trip imaginable. Do other Western Conference teams get such a manageable East Coast swing?

Re: Official 2018-2019 NHL Regular Season Thread

Yeah I think that generally happens on east coast trips with the NY teams. Sometimes with Philly thrown in since they're really close, too. Sharks had that road trip back in October.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but my NP (who has worked with me for a decade now) is neighbors and has become friendly with Golden Knight fourth-liner Pierre Edouard Bellmarre. She knows I'm a huge Knights fan (if not so much of him in particular). Last year she gave me a Golden Knights blanket and beer glass and knew I loved it. Today she came by my house with a Christmas present for me and really outdid herself :

Shit, I didn't know the Hurricanes wore Whalers' jerseys last night or I would have watched the game replay on NESN. I hear they're doing it again later this year, but it will be the white jerseys, not the green ones they wore last night.

I missed the Winter Classic today unfortunately.
They just announced that the 2020 Winter Classic will be hosted by the Dallas Stars and take place in the Cotton Bowl. Opponent not yet chosen but it won't be Chicago.

Vegas Golden Knights perhaps? Our fans will certainly buy the custom jerseys for the game.

Re: Official 2018-2019 NHL Regular Season Thread

First off, was pretty shocking in the IIHF Junior Tournament to see the Swiss upset the Swedes. I don't think anyone saw that coming. Also sucked seeing Canada lose the way they did
Spoiler:
(Finland ties it with a minute left; Canada gets a penalty shot in overtime but doesn't score; then they get this amazing chance at an open net but the player's stick shattered; then the Fins took the puck up the ice and score like twenty seconds later)
. Oh well, it was still a good game.

In terms of the NHL All-Star players that were selected, there's way too many snubs (even though, ultimately, the game itself is pretty much always a joke). But seriously Karlsson (who is having a pretty bad year, given his past play) over Giordano. And they really need to get rid of this "one player from every team" bullshit. I understand why they do it (mainly for marketing purpose, and to ensure that every market is represented so more viewers will turn in), but it's almost criminal to leave out Fredrik Andersen, Mitch Marner, Brayden Point, Sean Monahan, etc. There's many players that are not nearly as good as them that were chosen for the game...

And in regards to the U.S./Czech game...

...
Spoiler:
the Czechs just scored and are now only down by a goal

Since December 13, the four top teams in the Metro (WSH, PIT, COL, NYI) are a combined 30-6-1. Penguins have won 8 in a row and the Islanders 6 in a row and both re 9-1 in their last 10.

Great game for the Sharks last night against the Lightning, handing them their first regulation loss in 17 games.
