Dodgers trade for Russell Martin back. Not sure that really addresses their catcher needs.

It seems that LeMathieu will be used in a utility role. If that's the case, the Yankees could very well still be in the Machado sweepstakes. They could run out Machado at 3rd, Tulo at short and Andujar at DH with LeMathieu serving as backup at 2nd and 3rd. There is also the possibility of trading Andujar if Machado signs.

Having said that, I do not think they'll be signing Machado. Reports say they haven't made a final offer and have balked at the idea of going to $300 million.

There's going to be a strike when the labor contract ends. Whatever has happened in free agency, players are getting significantly weaker deals the past two years than we've ever seen before in modern times. We kept hearing that teams were saving up to spend freely this off-season after two years of relative non-spending. Grandal only getting a one-year deal is fairly damning that free agency is broken for the players.

I fear it's going to cost us most of a season. If I were running the Players' union, i'd be preparing for war with the owners. I wonder if they would hold a World Series if they start in July or August.

Or maybe, just maybe, teams realized that spending $200 million dollars on one guy just really isn't worth it anymore. Especially with all the analytics now, where teams are figuring out how to get better value for their dollars. MLB really seems to be going the way of NFL, where there are maybe one or two mega contracts on a team, at most.

The players are going to demand the game's economics are restructured. Free agents were always overpaid relative to their worth, but the owners took that in exchange for 6-7 years of cheap control during a player's 20s. Now that teams aren't signing anyone over 30, the whole system is broken.

I think we are going to lose a whole season over this issue.

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out, as the Players/Owners are scared to death of another 1994 repeat where the backlash was furious in 1995. Baseball is the only sport that felt the wraith of their fans after a strike/lockout as the NBA and NHL seem to get away with it every 6-7 years when lock the players out. The problem is if they shorten the arbitration years, then they will really kill the small market teams. The only thing that keeps the small market teams from losing great players (for a few years) is that they can control them for 6-7 years before they leave for the big market teams.

I knew much more about him as a pitching coach then I did as a player.

This was an interesting read about his career: https://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...St0-3QW34ulGr8

Man, it's less than a month before pitchers and catcher report and Harper and Machado are still unsigned. So weird.

Not really. Both are asking for $325M/10 with opt outs and no one wants to give it to them. Maybe the Phillies will to Harper. SD is apparently in on Machado.

Also, remember that JD Martinez was not signed until almost March.

I still think there is a chance Harper returns to the Nats on a short term deal or a "de facto" short term deal with an opt out after 3.

It's just so different than the NBA where even the mediocre players are signed within 48 hrs of free agency.

Longtime Red's radio broadcaster Marty Brennaman is retiring after the 2019 season. Bummer, I've listened to him for a LOT of years.

I think he started right after Al Michaels(who I think did the 1972 season). Well ,I should know because I have the Reds Highlight LPs from 1970,1972,1975 and 1976.

I listened to a lot of games on WLW(available in SE Michigan).

I listened also to the White Sox ,Twins, Indians,Pirates and Phillies back in the day when radio was still King and except for WGN and WOR ,baseball was seldom seen on local TV.

ESPN is reporting the White Sox have offered Machado a 7/$175M deal. I can't see him signing there unless the money goes over $200M (actually $210M). I don't think he (or anyone else) wants to be there. I could actually see Philly signing both he and Harper at this point (although I still think the Dodgers are the odds-on favorite).

He has been calling Reds games longer than I have been alive (although I didn't grow up listening to him since I didn't grow up here). It will be weird not hearing his voice on the radio after this season, and I wonder how many people will continue to bring their portable radios to the stadium to listen to the broadcast after he's gone.

From a leverage standpoint, the teams in on either Harper or Machado have to pretend to be "in" on both of them. If that is truly their best offer, then this free agent market is utterly broken.

MillerCoors losing stadium naming rights for Milwaukee Brewers in 2021

This will be so weird to not have that stadium called Miller Park.

^ I didn't even know that Miller and Coors had merged.
They're different ballparks!

Speaking of which : How weird is it that two different NFL Stadiums are both Mercedes-Benz? How does that make any sense?

AJ Pollock to Dodgers seems to be a done deal, provided they trade Joc Pederson. Sad to see him go but guy was never, ever healthy.

Pollock's deal is 5 years with Dodgers with opt outs. Perfect. It will likely be over $50 million threshold, which gives the Dbacks a compensatory A pick.

Edit: Sweet, it's 4 years $50 million guaranteed.

I guess that means there's little chance in signing Harper. Not really a fan of Polllock since I don't trust he'll be able to stay healthy. And I don't really think he's a significant upgrade over Puig/Kemp. It'll be interesting if the Dodgers trade Joc now.

Right handed bat with power to even out the line-up. I wanted Harper but this is a pretty good Option B.
