Official 2018 Tennis Thread

Not a great start to the new year for Djokovic and Nadal.

Nadal has pulled out of all events up to the Aussie Open. He's still hoping to play there.

Djokovic has been labeled as "in doubt" for the Aussie Open, due to an elbow injury.

With these two guys either out or not 100%, maybe Fed can sneak away with Grand Slam #20?

Man it's awesome that he's still a threat in the year he'll turn 37. GOAT!

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

So much for "Aussie Open is great because all the players are healthy!"

But we should get Murray, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Milos, back.

Won't see FAA (Felix) debut because of a knee injury, apparently minor, but wise not to take chances and mess up the whole season at that age.

I want to see the "next gen" make a dent and I expect it will not be just Zverev. Go Rublev, Kachanov, Chung, Shapo, etc.

Fed and Rafa have a decent shot at another slam each. Hopefully, the AO is as fast as it was last year.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

I think Nadal is saving everything for the clay court season. He just can't play a full yearly schedule anymore at his age with that punishing style of game.

The game needs Murray to be fully healthy and playing motivated. He's seemed softer since getting married.

And now Murray is out. Says he needs right hip surgery.

Murray was possibly overtrained during his peak years and I think that is catching up with him.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

Time for the NextGen guys to make their move up the rankings. The era of the "big 4" appears over (though I guess you could argue it ended last year). Funny that old man Fed is the healthiest.

Nishkikori out and now Serena too

Once the AO is over it will be the first time since early 1997 Serena does not have a WTA ranking

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

If it is any consolation to the women, the American men look even worse. Isner and Sock are already gone. It's a dark, dark time to be an American tennis fan.

Novak Djokovic looks much heavier (and not in a ripped manner) since we last saw him. He's lost half a step moving side to side. His groundstrokes still look good but eyeballing him after one match, he'll be fighting to stay in the top ten in 2018. The new serve motion mostly looks reworked to reduce torque on his gimpy elbow. It's now a much harder and flatter serve.

Disappointing from Shapo last night. He really choked away that 5th set.

So, to my Canadian tennis friends (or anyone who watches tennis)...what in the hell has happened to Bouchard? She seemed like a Top 5 lock and GS champ not too long ago and now she's completely fallen off, losing to women who are Challenger tour level.

Yup, became undone serving at 5-3 but give Tsonga credit, he started playing much better and kept Denis under pressure. Experience, Denis will learn.

For a massive choke, see the girl (Jana Fett) who was playing Wozniacki. Up 5-1 in the 3rd and serving for it. Didn't win another game and lost 7-5. All Woz had to do was keep the ball in the court.

Short version from people in the know: "Stubborn/uncoachable". At least she won her 1st match since God knows when. But she gets Halep next. New outfit is cute though!

Her downfall can seemingly be traced to her "slip" in the locker room back in the 2015 US Open. Even though she wasn't having a great 2015, that bizarre incident capped off her decline. I wonder what the real story is behind that incident, because it killed her career momentum dead. It got in her head.

I think she received some very poor training advice after her strong 2014, bulking up for some reason. Someone must have deluded Bouchard into thinking she had to compete with Serena Williams. If she had been content being a top-ten player, that would have been much easier pulling off for her talent level.

Her erratic groundstrokes severely limit her potential these days. One of the most mechanical players I've seen on the tour.

Again:

Short version from people in the know: "Stubborn/uncoachable"

I can guarantee you that her crappy results in the past few years have nothing to do with "bad training advice" and/or poor coaching. Sounds cliche but you can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped.

Wasn't Fett up 5-1 and 40-15 and still lost?

Honestly, she was serving at 5-1 but I don't recall how the score in that game went.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

Djokovic is hitting harder and flatter groundstrokes than I've ever seen from him. It looks like he's completely rethought his game, moving from extreme spin to more power. I think he's changed or tweaked his racket.

I know it was Stan's first tournament back after months of rehab, but I cannot believe he lost to some 26 year old Challenger Tour level guy.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

That Lauren Davis-Halep match was riveting tennis in the third set. Davis deserved to win with her play. Both women looked physically destroyed after the match.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

Yeah, Davis vs Halep was great. Too bad Davis had the foot issues because she was dictating play.

And Zverev just can't handle the pressure in big moments. He became undone in the 4th and barely won a few points in the 5th. He admitted it was all in his head. Chung was solid and will be a good test for Djokovic.

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

Brad Gilbert was basically saying that Zverev can't handle five-set matches and does much better in the regular three-set format.

And Djokovic failed the test. Didn't see the match, but headlines like "ailing Djokovic" probably mean he wasn't at his best. Not surprising after a long layoff. Thiem also lost.

Fed's tough draw pretty mush evaporated (Querry/Raonic, Goffin/Del Po, Djokovic, all gone). He gets Berdych, Chung/Sandgren instead.

Rafa had an easy draw and the only guy I thought could beat him (Kyrgios) is also gone. I doubt Cilic or Dimitrov can do it.

So, looks like we'll get another Fed vs Rafa final!

Re: Official 2018 Tennis Thread

I don't know, Dimitrov seems to have stepped his game up. It's taken much longer than expected, but maybe he can finally get over the hump...and then lose to Fed in the final
