BIG3 Basketball League

I wanted to create a thread for this since i'm casually interested and plan on following along for shits and giggles. Season begins June 25th and teams were just drafted a few days ago.

This is the venture headed by Ice Cube that is a 3v3 basketball league with a lot of former players either playing or as coaches, including a lot of familiar names and faces for anyone that's followed the NBA or NCAA like Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, and Jermaine O'Neal.

http://big3.com/

THE CONCEPT

The BIG3 is the American 3-on-3 professional basketball league. Combining superstar players and fan interaction before and after the games make this an exciting live experience. The entire league is operated and managed by the players. No outsiders. No politics. Just highly competitive basketball played as it’s meant to be.

THE GAMEPLAY

Half-court play and rules designed for competition and intensity. 3-on-3 basketball is the most popular format for training, practice and recreation because it is the most entertaining.

GAME DAY

The BIG3 season starts in the summer with the inaugural season beginning June, 2017. Regular season games will follow each Saturday for 10 weeks. Games are played on centered hardwood courts in the best arenas and venues in the country. Individual player introductions add a new level of personality to this team sport. Instead of a tip off, each game starts with a half-court do-or-die shootout. 4 games per day with fan events, halftime shows, exhibits and after-parties.

I can't imagine tuning in for this, but I might watch a game if it's on. Some of those players are not that old so it's not like it'd be an Old Timers' Game.

3's company is coached by Allen Iverson? Will they practice or just save it for the games?

FS1 will be televising all the games.

The championship game will be on the big FOX network.

I might check out week 1 out of curiosity, but I can't imagine 3 on 3 hoops with a mix of retired players and scrubs being compelling TV.

I'd have liked to see Payton play, but not so much the older coaches.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

I'm going to record some these an watch them after the fact. I've played in a lot of 3 on 3 tournaments in my lifetime and love the format. Looks like a lot of favorite players are involved as well. If I wasn't going to be out of town I would try and go to that stop in Seattle.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

3v3 should reduce the players looking "old" in a full court game, plus a lot of these guys are playing for a paycheck so it should be competitive. I hope

I assume this will be more like an all star game when it comes to defense? Because i don't know how well these guys can take a charge anymore, or come off of hard screens.

When is Lavar Ball going to become involved and team with his two younger sons to dominate the league?

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

3 on 3 basketball is a lot more fun to play than actually watching it. The strategies are not that similar to regular basketball.

I wonder what shape some of these former stars are in. Many former NBA players can barely play anymore by the time they are in their late 30s, even recreationally. Their knees have often worn out from all the basketball they played in their 20s.

I'm guessing one of the following - the coach fills in - they just have to finish off the game with three players - there are a couple of extra players at each site and they choose one of them to be the fourth player to finish off the game. Then if the injury is serious enough where one of the injured players has to miss next game or games, they could sign the replacement to the deal.

Each team has 5 players.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

I would likely watch if the teams were made up of non-basketball players. Like Wayne Gretzky, Ickey Woods, or Charles Barkley.

Only the Brooklyn venue has seats for sale. Hardly "most dates".

I might go to the Championship game if the seats are cheap enough. Might be fun.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

Yeah, that's weird. My coworkers and I were talking about going to the one at Staples Center.

Interesting that there's a stop at the Seattle Center Coliseum in August.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

With as many ex Sonics as there are on those teams, I guess they figured there would be a lot of interest in this area. That post earlier was indeed wrong. Tickets for the Seattle stop only went on sale yesterday. No way I would reschedule my vacation, but I would have loved to go and see a lot of old friends.

I remember an interview with Reggie Miller not that long ago. They asked him in his current shape could he play an NBA game. He said right now off the street he could give you a good 20-25 minutes in an NBA game and perform at a reasonable level. The problem is he said, it would take him a month to recover from that game. As you get old the body just cant recover like it used to.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

Reggie Miller last played 12 years ago, he's not playing 20-25 minutes even as a one-off.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

Front court players fall apart after retirement. Nearly 7' tall bodies weren't made to handle years of NBA basketball. Many of them are physical wrecks in their 40s.

I just keep wondering if they'll really make it through a full season. I'm having some failed spring football league flashbacks.

Re: BIG3 Basketball League

Unrelated to this league but it's closer to this than the NBA anyway. 3-on-3 basketball added to the 2020 Olympics, both men and women. That should actually greatly help interest in this, I'd think.

They haven't decided or announced whether the Olympics would allow current NBA players, but with as valuable as these players are and how much money their contracts are for, I kinda doubt owners would allow it. Cuban especially would throw a fit. Though I'd love to see like a reunion of KD/Westbrook/Harden up against CP3/Melo/Lebron.
