Oh sure, second-round picks can pop every now and then, but it's trivial compared to some of the ridiculous ideas that had been floating around (like working Brown or Tatum into the deal).

I know, I was just floating the worst disaster scenarios I could think of.

Forgot one : Marc Gasol. Couldn't find a draft picture with him.

but it's not really a disaster scenario, because not only does that 2nd round pick have to be one of those extreme outliers, but for it to truly be disastrous, the Celtics would also have to have drafted him in the alternate universe. IOW, just because the Cavs hit on that pick (assuming they do), it doesn;t mean the Cs got screwed, because odds are they would have chosen someone else had they kept the pick.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Good point. Yeah, Second rounders are really disposable as so few of them ever hit. I was SO HAPPY that the Lakers got to convert their impending unprotected First Round pick due to the Orlando Magic into two Second-Rounders instead. Dodged a big bullet there (and we've already suffered enough for that Dwight trade)

Still can't believe Draymond made it to the Second Round though.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

That Laker pick could've been quite high so that was a big relief for sure.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have the second-rounder than not, but it's good just to be done with it. Personally I would've been OK keeping the players and pick, but Irving should be good, and this way they don't have to mend fences.

Magic Johnson has offered to pay the $500K fine for the Lakers tampering issue.

He doesn't want Jeanie Buss to deal with it.

Cavs are picking, they can barely get the number one pick right, no way they're getting a second round steal.

Wait, I take that back, I looked it up and they drafted in the second round since 2002:
Allen Crabbe
Jae Crowder
Danny Green
Daniel Gibson
Jason Kapono
Carlos Boozer

They traded or cut those first three guys almost right away though. But still, that's a decent haul.

Great piece on the Players Tribune from IT: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/is...ics-cavaliers/

Gonna miss that little guy, and hope he KILLS it with Lebron (just not against the Celtics).

Lakers to retire Kobe Bryant's jersey on Dec. 18.

Well deserved honor IMO.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

On a whim I browsed through the posters they're selling at Target. This is in the LA market.

The only two basketball ones they had:
1. DeAngelo Russell Lakers poster
2. Chris Paul Clippers poster

they need to take those out asap (though honestly I might have bought the Paul one for my son if it was clearanced or something).

The other problem is that if you flatten the odds of the #1 pick, you just create two more teams with incentives to tank.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Apparently Lakers will retire both numbers Kobe wore. Has that ever happened before? I know Jordan only briefly switched numbers but I don't think Chicago retired both (though for whatever reason Miami also retired Jordan's number, as well as a jersey for Dan Marino).

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Kobe's change happened at exactly the mid-point of his 20 year career. He had tons of success on both sides of the number change. Makes sense to retire both numbers, even if it's unprecedented.

As an aside, one of the things I hated most in his entire career was when Kobe one day decided he would be #24 effective immediately and from that moment on wouldn't sign #8 jerseys for little kids in his basketball camp. We all know Kobe is an asshole, but man that was cold marketing bullshit.

Re: 2017 NBA Off-Season Thread

Looks like tickets are sold out for Kobe's retirement ceremony night. I assume it was sold out as soon as the news came this morning.

Nosebleed seats are going for $660+ for a pair from third party sellers/scalpers.

That is a total asshole move, but it is far from the thing I hate most about him.
