2017 NHL Off-Season Thread

Looks like I get to kick off the off-season with some Golden Knights news :

Vegas Golden Knights to hire Gerard Gallant as head coach

Updated April 12, 2017 - 7:09 pm
The Golden Knights have found their head coach.
Gerard Gallant, who had spent the past 2½ seasons with the Florida Panthers, will be announced as the NHL expansion team’s first coach. A noon Thursday news conference is scheduled at T-Mobile Arena for the official announcement.
A source close to the process said Wednesday afternoon that Gallant would be hired. Team majority owner Bill Foley would neither confirm nor deny the move.

“I can’t comment on that,” he said.
Gallant, 53, led the Panthers to the Atlantic Division title in 2016 but was let go Nov. 25 after Florida started slowly and was near the bottom of the division. In his time with the Panthers, Gallant was 96-64-25. He also had previously been the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was 56-76-4-6 in three seasons with the Blue Jackets.
Gallant, a sixth-round draft pick in 1981 by Detroit, played 11 NHL seasons as a forward with the Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning. He scored 211 goals had 480 points and 1,674 penalty minutes.
Gallant was coaching in Montreal as the Canadiens’ assistant head coach when Florida general manager Dale Tallon tabbed him to take over the Panthers in June 2014. He was 38-29-15 his first season in Florida, finishing with 91 points and sixth place in the Atlantic Division.
His second season saw the Panthers in contention from the start of the season and finish first in the Atlantic with 103 points. Florida lost a tough first-round playoff series to the New York Islanders. For his efforts, Gallant was the runner-up for the Jack Adams Award which goes to the NHL’s Coach of the Year.
There were high expectations when the 2016-17 season began. But the Panthers started slowly. The team had already made changes to upper management, moving Tallon out of his GM job and leaning more toward analytics to make decisions.
On Nov. 27 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Tom Rowe, the team’s GM fired Gallant. The Panthers were 11-10-1 at the time. Adding insult to the situation was the well-publicized photo of Gallant getting in a cab to the Raleigh Airport after the transportation the Panthers had arranged for him never arrived.

But he immediately became a person of interest for the Golden Knights. General manager George McPhee said there was no rush to hire a coach but he reached out to Gallant shortly after he was let go by Florida.
In January, Gallant met with Foley, McPhee and assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon. Both sides appeared to have hit it off and it was left that the Knights were interested in signing Gallant. However, if a better offer came up, both sides could walk away.
The Islanders interviewed Gallant after they fired coach Jack Capuano on Jan. 10. Gallant, a former Islanders assistant coach, was offered the job but turned it down, knowing he still had an offer from Vegas.
The Dallas Stars, who hired Ken Hitchcock Wednesday after firing Lindy Ruff Sunday, showed some brief interest in Gallant. It was at that point Foley and McPhee decided enough waiting had passed and quickly finalized the deal to bring Gallant to the Golden Knights.
Ironically, Gallant’s return to the NHL coincides with Tallon’s return as the Panthers’ GM after Rowe was fired from both the GM and head coach position after the season. The Panthers managed just 81 points and missed the playoffs.

So we get our Gallant Knight after all!

Gallant Knight!

I would have lobbied for Daryl Sutter, but I'm biased. Gallant had some success with the Florida Panthers, so I'm ok with this hire.

Re: 2017 NHL Off-Season Thread

I think it is a good hire .. it is an expansion team and I assume they will be a fairly young team with some vets sprinkled in. I'm not sure that is a good situation for Sutter

T-Mobile Arena to host 2017 NHL Awards, Expansion Draft

The National Hockey League announced Tuesday that the 2017 NHL Awards will return to Las Vegas and include the NHL Expansion Draft in a two-hour television program.

The 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft will celebrate the League’s top talent from the 2016-17 season and reveal the initial roster of the League’s 31st team, the Vegas Golden Knights on June 21 at T-Mobile Arena.

The awards will be televised live in the United States on NBCSN and in Canada on Sportsnet at 5 p.m. As part of the program, the Golden Knights’ 30 selections in the NHL Expansion Draft will be revealed, providing the home fans –- and national viewing audience –- the opportunity to learn the initial composition of the team’s roster.

The show will highlight team Majority Owner Bill Foley, General Manager George McPhee, Head Coach Gerard Gallant, as well as select players chosen by the Golden Knights, who begin NHL play in 2017-18.

The 2017 NHL Awards will again honor the top individual regular-season performances in a wide range of categories, including most valuable player (Hart Trophy), outstanding goaltender (Vezina Trophy), outstanding defenseman (Norris Trophy) and outstanding rookie (Calder Trophy). The Ted Lindsay Award, which is presented annually to the “most outstanding player” in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), also will be awarded.

The 2017 NHL Awards marks the eighth time the League will honor the best hockey players in the world and top performances of the season in Las Vegas, and the first time that T-Mobile Arena will host the NHL Award™. Other Las Vegas venues that have hosted include the Palms Hotel (2009-2011), Encore at Wynn Las Vegas (2012, 2014), MGM Grand (2015) and The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (2016). Encore at Wynn Las Vegas will serve as NHL Headquarters during the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft.

Information on an exclusive ticket pre-sale for Vegas Golden Knights season-ticket holders will be sent by the club in the coming days. This opportunity is for tickets to the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Tickets will be available for purchase to the general public beginning on May 3 at 10 a.m.

LB - Sabres have fired General Manager Tim Murray and Head Coach Dan Bylsma.

The Sabres cleaned house Thursday morning, firing General Manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma.
Murray met with owner Terry Pegula on Wednesday to wrap up the season.
It's clear the owner didn't like what he heard and saw, announcing both the GM and coach have been relieved of their duties.

“After reviewing the past season and looking at the future of our organization, Kim and I have decided to relieve General Manager Tim Murray and Head Coach Dan Bylsma of their duties," Pegula said in a statement. "We want to thank Tim and Dan for their hard work and efforts that they have put in during their tenures with the club. We wish them luck. We have begun the process to fill these positions immediately.”

Pegula will discuss the firings Friday morning.

Blackhawks fired assistant Mike Kitchen.

This normally wouldn't be a big story, but Kitchen is a close friend of Quenneville. Q was reportedly not consulted and was not happy.

I say good for Stan.

Hawks traded Darling to Carolina for a 3rd round pick. I guess good trade since he was not going to be resigned. But they need another goalie for next year.

Didn't realize the lottery was tonight. I guess it's not as hyped up this year as with the last couple.

Thanks for the reminder Decker.

Worst possible deal for the Knights in the lottery.

All 3 top picks are teams that moved up.

Re: 2017 NHL Off-Season Thread

My team got a second player!

Golden Knights Sign Center Vadim Shipachyov To Two-Year Contract
The 30-year-old finished third in KHL scoring this season as a member of SKA Saint Petersburg

VEGAS - May 4, 2017 - Vegas Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee announced today, May 4, that the team has signed Russian free agent forward Vadim Shipachyov (pronounced va-DEEM SHIP-ah-shoff) from SKA Saint Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia) to a two-year contract worth an average annual salary of $4.5 million. McPhee will be available to media via conference call on Friday, May 5. Those details will be sent by the Golden Knights Communications Staff on Friday.

"Vadim is a highly skilled playmaker who has had an impressive career in the Kontinental Hockey League," said Vegas Golden Knights General Manager George McPhee. "He has won two KHL championships, has been among the league leaders in scoring the last two seasons and has enjoyed success at the international level for Team Russia. We believe he can be an impact player in the NHL."

Shipachyov is currently in Cologne, Germany with Team Russia at the 2017 IIHF World Championships.

The 30-year-old forward finished third in the KHL scoring race this season with 76 points on 26 goals and 50 assists in 50 games. The 50 assists were the second most in the league. He also had 19 points on four goals and 15 assists in 17 games during the KHL playoffs, helping SKA Saint Petersburg win the league championship for the second time in his career (2017 and 2015).

During the 2015-16 season, Shipachyov skated in 54 regular-season games for SKA Saint Petersburg and tallied 17 goals and a league-leading 43 assists for 60 points. In his KHL career, Shipachyov has registered 137 goals and 275 assists for 412 points in 445 games split between Saint Petersburg and his hometown team of Severstal Cherepovets. He has served as either a captain or alternate captain of SKA St. Petersburg the last three seasons.

At the international level, he has played Team Russia on three previous occasions at the IIHF World Championships during the 2014, 2015 and 2016 tournaments. He won a gold medal in 2014, silver in 2015 and bronze in 2016 where he led the entire tournament in scoring and assists with 18 points on six goals and 12 assists. He also played for Russia during the recent 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.

The 6'1'', 190-pound forward is a native of Cherepovets, Russia.

I'm new to this : is signing foreign league players like it is in MLB where whoever offers the most can sign the player away? How often do players move from other leagues to the NHL? Is that how the really good Russian players end up in the NHL or are they drafted?

Carolina signs him for $16.6 mil over 4 years.

Players over 25 can sign with whoever for whatever. 24 and younger have to sign an entry level deal which has a max salary and max bonus amount, even if they weren't drafted.

Unless you are talking Malkin or Ovechkin, teams have been leery of taking Russian players since they have the option of staying home and playing in the KHL.

Among the many, many things that suck about Adidas taking over Jersey manufacturing next season (which includes the lack of a third jersey this season and the scarcity of new sweaters for sale thanks to the shortened turn-around time) is this one :
The $170 replica jerseys will not have an Adidas logo on them -- they will have a Fanatics logo instead. You'll need to buy the $360 Authentic jersey (complete with fighting strap) in order to get the Adidas logo.
